Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt if you want a directed, story-led adventure as Geralt, a monster hunter searching for his adopted daughter. Choose The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim if you want to create your own character and decide how to explore a fantasy world. Neither is a universal winner: the better fit depends on whether you prefer a defined hero and central story or a more self-directed role-playing path.

The table reflects the publishers’ descriptions of each game, not a measured head-to-head test. Those descriptions point to different role-playing approaches rather than proving one game has better combat, a larger world, or more playtime.

Choose The Witcher 3 for a defined protagonist and central story
Geralt is not a blank character for you to invent: he is the established lead of a monster-hunting story, with the search for Ciri at its center. The setting and mission give the adventure a clear personal direction. That makes The Witcher 3 a stronger fit if you want your exploration tied to a specific protagonist and an unfolding narrative.
Choose Skyrim for freedom to shape your character’s path
Skyrim starts from a different premise: you create a character and explore as the Dragonborn, with the freedom to choose your own way through the world. Its mix of weapons, spells, and abilities supports a role you define through your choices. It is the more natural pick if you value self-directed fantasy role-playing over following one authored hero’s journey.

How do combat and progression compare?
The available publisher descriptions establish different emphases, not a reliable verdict on which combat system is deeper or better. The Witcher 3 Remastered highlights revised combat presentation and a reworked skill tree; Skyrim emphasizes a broad choice of weapons, spells, and abilities. Consider whether you would rather play within Geralt’s established role or build a character around the options that appeal to you.
What do the current editions include?
The Witcher 3 Remastered
CD PROJEKT RED says Remastered includes both expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, and that qualifying owners of the original game receive a free upgrade. Its September 29, 2026 announcement lists qualifying ownership on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S; Nintendo Switch 2 owners of the original Switch game also qualify. Skyrim Anniversary Edition
Bethesda describes Anniversary Edition as the Skyrim Special Edition core game and add-ons bundled with Creation Club content. A digital upgrade is available for Special Edition owners, so check whether you already own that edition before paying for the full package. Special Edition’s three official add-ons are Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn. Bethesda’s current page lists platform choices; storefront content and regional availability may differ. Bethesda’s 2021 FAQ said physical copies were available for PS4 and Xbox One at launch and required internet access to redeem and download included Creation Club content. That historical launch information does not establish current physical stock. Bethesda’s FAQ

Mod support is relevant to this choice, but it is not a like-for-like feature with identical tools, catalogues, or platform coverage. Bethesda says Special Edition supports console mods and later described a unified Creations menu for mods, Creation Club items, and new Creations. What should you check before buying?
- Start with the role you want. Pick Geralt’s focused monster-hunting story or a character and path of your own making.
- Check what you already own. A qualifying original Witcher 3 owner may be eligible for a free upgrade; a Skyrim Special Edition owner can check Bethesda’s digital Anniversary upgrade.
- Compare included content. Remastered bundles two named expansions; Anniversary Edition adds Creation Club content to Special Edition and its official add-ons.
- Verify your platform and region. Upgrade eligibility, storefront options, and Creations availability are not necessarily the same everywhere.
- Confirm mod support for your setup. The tools and availability differ between the games and can depend on platform and edition.
What the available evidence does—and does not—settle
Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page claims “more than 200 Game of the Year Awards,” but does not provide an award-by-award list or methodology. That is a publisher promotional claim, not an independently verified comparison with The Witcher 3. Bethesda
