There is no single best graphics preset for every PC in The Witcher 3. Choose settings around your display resolution, the frame rate you want to sustain, your hardware, and whether you prefer conventional rendering or ray tracing. Start with a stable baseline, then change one group of settings at a time and judge the result in actual play.
Version matters: the 4.0 next-gen update’s setting notes are not a complete settings guide for the September 29, 2026 Remastered release. The current release overview confirms PC Path Tracing, but the available official information does not establish one universal preset or a full current settings matrix.
What to check before tuning
- Platform and game version: Confirm whether you are playing the 4.0 next-gen build or the 2026 Remastered release. The official Remastered announcement identifies PC Path Tracing and PS5 Pro support; the older 4.0 notes describe settings for that earlier release.
- Output resolution: Set the resolution you actually plan to play at before judging performance. CD PROJEKT RED says, “Higher resolution will significantly affect FPS.”
- Frame-rate goal and consistency: Decide whether you value a higher, steadier frame rate or more demanding visual effects. Performance can fluctuate by scene as well as by system and settings; CD PROJEKT RED notes, “Performance also may vary depending on your system configuration and any changes made to graphics settings or output resolution.” Its stated FPS targets are based on QA tests and can fluctuate with scene and gameplay.
- PC readiness: CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements say an SSD is required for the latest technical enhancements. The same page says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported or tested, though the game may still run on it.
Best settings for performance-first play
If smooth performance is the priority, begin without ray tracing or Path Tracing, then tune resolution and detail against the frame rate you can maintain. This is a practical starting approach, not a CD PROJEKT RED-certified preset: the developer says results vary with the scene, PC configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution.
- Set your intended output resolution. Avoid comparing settings at a resolution you will not use during normal play.
- Start with conventional rendering. Turn off ray-traced features or Path Tracing if they are enabled and performance is below your goal.
- Use an upscaler only if your game build and GPU offer it. Check the current in-game menu and hardware support rather than assuming the 4.0 feature list applies unchanged to Remastered.
- Reduce scene-detail options selectively. The 4.0 PC Ultra+ notes identify controls for background characters, shadows, grass density, textures, foliage visibility, terrain, water, and detail. Lower or raise these in small groups; the available official information does not establish a universal FPS-cost ranking for them.
- Test in a repeatable stretch of gameplay. Watch both frame-rate consistency and image quality, then keep the change only if it improves the result you care about.
Best settings for visual quality
For a quality-first setup, retain the resolution and detail level you want, then try more demanding effects only if your system has headroom. The 4.0 PC update notes list ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, with ray-traced reflections and shadows on compatible PC hardware. The 2026 Remastered overview confirms PC Path Tracing, but does not provide a complete current menu or compatibility matrix.

- Establish a stable baseline at your preferred resolution. Check that ordinary gameplay is already acceptable before enabling advanced effects.
- Enable one ray-traced option or Path Tracing at a time. Compare the same scene before and after; do not assume the most demanding option is worthwhile on every system.
- Choose the supported upscaler that appears in your build. The 4.0 notes named FSR 2.1 and DLSS 3 on compatible hardware. That historical list does not guarantee the same support on every Remastered configuration.
- Recheck detail settings after enabling effects. If performance becomes inconsistent, decide whether the added effect is worth lowering another setting or returning to conventional rendering.

What the 4.0 notes do—and do not—tell you
CD PROJEKT RED’s December 12, 2022 4.0 update notes are useful for identifying PC setting categories and the features introduced in that release. They list Ultra+ controls and PC ray-tracing options, but they should not be treated as the full settings matrix for the 2026 Remastered version.

Similarly, the 2022 console mode descriptions are historical, not verified targets for Remastered. That announcement described PS5 and Xbox Series X Ray Tracing mode as targeting 30 FPS and Performance mode as targeting 60 FPS; Xbox Series S was described as having Quality and Performance modes without ray tracing. Check the current game’s platform menu and patch information before relying on those old mode names or targets.
Upscaling and hardware compatibility
Upscaling can help balance output resolution and performance, but the exact options depend on the build and GPU. NVIDIA’s explanation of the 2022 next-gen PC version distinguishes DLSS 3 Frame Generation on GeForce RTX 40 Series from DLSS 2 Super Resolution on RTX PCs, and discusses the game’s RTX features. Those compatibility details describe the 2022 update, so verify current Remastered support in the game and with your GPU vendor rather than carrying them forward as guarantees.

NVIDIA’s feature overview is available at its Witcher 3 DLSS and ray-tracing explainer. Treat vendor performance claims as conditional, not as a promise of a particular frame rate on your system.

PC options such as individual Ultra+ controls, GPU-specific upscaling, and Path Tracing do not map directly to console presets. The available 2022 console mode targets are tied to that update and are not confirmed here for the Remastered release. On console, choose among the modes currently shown in your version’s settings menu and compare their motion smoothness and image quality on your display.
