Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, alchemy turns gathered ingredients into combat tools: potions and bombs provide limited-use effects, oils prepare Geralt’s weapons for particular enemy types, and decoctions trade toxicity capacity for powerful, long-lasting effects. To brew, open the Alchemy panel, choose a formula you know, check its ingredients, and create the item. Potions and bombs are replenished by meditating when you have hard alcohol; oils remain available after their first creation and can be applied again as needed.
How alchemy works
Alchemy is a recipe-based system. You need a formula and its listed ingredients, then create the item through the Alchemy panel. The in-game tutorial introduces the process by having Geralt prepare Thunderbolt before fighting the griffin. It directs you to open the panel, select the formula, check what it requires, and brew it.
- Learn or find a formula. The game starts you with some recipes; others can be found or purchased. How you obtain a formula depends on the recipe.
- Gather the listed ingredients. Plants, herbs, mushrooms, enemy loot, and mutagens all contribute to alchemy. Particularly dangerous monsters may drop rare mutagens.
- Open the Alchemy panel. Select a known formula to see its ingredient requirements.
- Create the item. If you are missing a material, an available shopkeeper may offer it for sale directly through the crafting interface.
You do not need to collect every plant or monster part you encounter. Check recipes in the panel and gather what you need for the items you actually plan to use. Formula locations and acquisition methods vary, so there is no single source for every recipe.
What each alchemy item is for
| Item | What it does | How to think about it |
|---|---|---|
| Potions | Give Geralt temporary or situational effects. | Choose one for a particular need, such as an offensive boost or seeing in darkness. |
| Oils | Coat weapons for use against particular enemy categories. | Identify the enemy type, then apply a matching oil. |
| Decoctions | Provide powerful, long-lasting effects and use mutagens. | Consider whether the effect is worth the toxicity capacity it occupies. |
| Bombs | Provide combat effects, including area effects; some can destroy monster nests. | Use them when an area or nest is the target. |
Potions: solve a specific problem
Potions are consumed doses, not permanent upgrades. Thunderbolt is an offensive aid in the tutorial’s griffin preparation; Cat is given as an example for seeing in darkness. Other familiar examples include Swallow for vitality regeneration and White Honey for clearing toxicity and lingering potion effects. Read an item’s description and choose according to the encounter and your build rather than assuming there is one universally best potion.

Oils: match the weapon coating to the enemy
Oils are weapon coatings aimed at enemy categories. The Bestiary can help you identify an enemy’s type before choosing an oil. A 2021 Steam community guide says oils remain in inventory after they are first made and can be applied again, unlike potion and bomb stock. Treat that as a practical distinction, not as a source for universal damage percentages: exact effects can depend on game version, difficulty, and abilities.
Decoctions: long-lasting effects with a toxicity tradeoff
Decoctions are brewed using mutagens and can give powerful, long-lasting effects. Their large toxicity cost leaves less room for other potions; excessive toxicity can affect vitality. Think of a decoction as part of a planned build or encounter setup, not a free extra effect. Whether one is worthwhile depends on your active abilities, mutation setup, and what you are about to fight.

Bombs: an adjacent consumable
Bombs are also made through alchemy and are consumed when used. Their area effects can help in combat, and some are useful for destroying monster nests. They follow the same replenishment principle as potions: meditate with hard alcohol available to restore stock.
How replenishment and oil application differ
The tutorial says that oils, potions, and bombs can run out and that meditation replenishes them automatically when Geralt has hard alcohol. A 2021 community guide clarifies the practical distinction for oils: after making an oil, the coating remains available and can be applied again, while potions and bombs have doses that are consumed and replenished. In other words, applying oil is an action you repeat; it does not mean you must brew a fresh oil for every application.

Choose what to prepare before a fight
- For Geralt’s condition: choose a potion based on the problem or advantage you want to address.
- For a known enemy: check its category in the Bestiary and apply the corresponding oil.
- For a planned build effect: weigh a decoction’s long-lasting benefit against the toxicity capacity it uses.
- For a group or nest: consider whether a bomb’s area effect or nest-destroying use fits the situation.
- For scarce materials: inspect the recipe first. Ordinary ingredients may be gathered from plants and wild growth, while some mutagens require monster loot.
There is no single loadout that fits every encounter. The useful distinction is what you are targeting—Geralt’s condition, a particular enemy, a build effect, or an area—and how much toxicity or ingredient effort that choice requires. Exact recipe quantities, toxicity thresholds, and effect durations are not established here, so rely on the in-game descriptions for the formula and item you are using.
