The WebStick is a maker-built, Wi-Fi network-storage device based on an ESP8266 board. With a microSD slot and creator tobychui’s Arduino-compatible firmware, it can serve files and host lightweight web services, including options for storing and streaming music and video. Hackaday reported a total project cost of around $5 in 2023; that is a reported project cost, not a current retail price or a guarantee of what a recreation will cost.

What the WebStick is

The WebStick is a compact DIY alternative to plugging a flash drive directly into a computer: it puts removable storage on a Wi-Fi network. Its ESP12F/ESP8266 board handles the network connection, while a microSD card provides storage. The project includes firmware source code from its creator, tobychui, for connecting the device and serving files.

Hackaday described the build in 2023 as networked storage with web-hosting capabilities on a board costing around $5. That figure describes the reported project cost at the time, not an established current price for a ready-to-use product. Hackaday’s WebStick report

What you can use it for

  • Sharing files: Serve files from the microSD card over the network.
  • Lightweight web hosting: Run web services without assembling a full server stack.
  • Media access: Store and stream music and video across the network, as described in the project report.

The project creator was quoted as saying that WebDAV could be added with a library to provide more traditional NAS capabilities. That is a possible extension, not evidence that WebDAV is included as a built-in feature. Hackaday’s report quoting tobychui

Hardware and what you need

Part Role
ESP12F/ESP8266 board Connects to the network and runs the project firmware.
microSD card slot and card Provide removable storage for files and media.
USB-A port Used for power and programming.

The project uses an Arduino-compatible development model and supplies firmware source. The report does not specify a required microSD capacity, speed class, brand, or current price, so choose a compatible card based on the project’s actual documentation rather than assuming a particular specification.

What “NAS” means in this case

WebStick fits the broad idea of network-attached storage because it makes files available over a network. But the available project description establishes a lightweight maker device, not the feature set or performance of a commercial NAS. It describes file serving and media services; it does not establish transfer rates, supported simultaneous users, or a particular storage protocol such as built-in WebDAV.

AUDHEID 8 Bay Mini ITX Micro ATX NAS Case, Hot Swap Drive Bays DIY Storage Enclosure, Dual Independent Air Channel, Support 3.5"/2.5" HDD SSD for Home Media Server Small Business Data Backup
  • 8 Hot-Swap Drive Bays: This 8-bay NAS case supports both 3.5" HDD and 2.5" SSD hard drives. Featuring a convenient hot-swap function, you can add or replace hard drives anytime without shutting down the whole system. Ideal for photographers building media libraries, household video storage, and small businesses for file archiving.
  • Dual Cooling Quiet System: Adopting an upper and lower separated independent air duct design, the heat generated by hard drives and the mainboard is dissipated separately without mutual interference. Equipped with 3 temperature-controlled silent fans, it maintains low temperature and low noise even under non-stop running.
  • Wide Compatibility DIY Flexible Assembly: Most NAS enclosures come with strict limitations on motherboards, power supplies and CPU coolers. Our case is widely compatible with Mini-ITX & Micro-ATX motherboards, 1U / FLEX small power supplies, and CPU coolers with a maximum height of 58mm. It works perfectly with all mainstream low-power NAS mainboards, bringing you extremely high freedom for customized DIY assembly.
  • Sturdy Steel Chassis With Indicator Lights: Made of full thick steel chassis for solid shockproof performance to protect your precious stored data. Each hard drive bay is equipped with dedicated power and read/write indicator lights, letting you monitor disk working status in real time. Front-panel USB 3.0 port plus power button are designed for easy daily peripheral plug-and-play and quick power control.
  • You will get: A network attached storage Enclosures with accessories including 3 x mute back fans, 2 x back panel, 8 x hard disk stands, SATA data cable, various screws. ( Motherboard CPU and other accessories are not included )

It is best understood as programmable network flash storage for modest uses, rather than a replacement for a system whose specifications, support, and data-protection features are documented.

Limitations to consider

  • Performance is unmeasured: The project report gives no transfer-rate benchmarks. Do not assume it will match a computer, Raspberry Pi, or commercial NAS.
  • Storage compatibility is unspecified: The report does not state a maximum card capacity or filesystem.
  • Scale is unknown: There are no published figures for simultaneous clients, power draw, or tested uptime in the cited description.
  • No redundancy or backup guarantee is documented: A removable microSD card is storage, not a backup strategy. Keep another copy of important files.

These unknowns matter if you plan to rely on the device for important or frequently accessed data. For an experimental project or convenient local sharing, its small size and programmability are the attraction; for dependable storage, look for a solution with documented backup and reliability features.

Who the WebStick suits

The WebStick makes sense for a maker who wants to experiment with an inexpensive ESP8266-based file server, expose a small collection of files on a local network, or explore simple web and media services. It is less appropriate when you need measured throughput, multiple-user capacity, built-in redundancy, or a stated backup and uptime policy.
