Some wearable technology that once looked cyberpunk is now real—but mostly as separate, task-specific tools, not as a seamless set of body upgrades. Consumer smart glasses can combine cameras, microphones, speakers, AI features and a small display; a wristband can detect muscle signals for subtle gestures. Haptics, exosuits, prosthetic sensory feedback and wearable brain-computer interfaces are also being developed, but much of that work remains experimental or assistive rather than general-purpose consumer tech.
What wearable technology from cyberpunk is real?
The clearest current consumer example is display-equipped smart glasses paired with wrist-based electromyography (EMG) input. EMG systems use electrical signals associated with muscle activity to detect intended gestures. That is a different kind of input from tapping a touchscreen: the user can make a small movement, while the glasses provide visual or audio output.
Other parts of the imagined cyberpunk toolkit exist in narrower forms. Researchers are exploring wearable haptics that deliver touch-like cues, soft suits that apply force or tactile feedback, and prostheses that return sensory information. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have also been tested as control inputs for assistive equipment. These systems do not all solve the same problem, and a working prototype or controlled experiment is not evidence that an equivalent product is ready for everyday use.
| Technology | What it can do | Evidence and practical limit |
|---|---|---|
| Display-equipped smart glasses | Combine a small visual display with features such as cameras, microphones, speakers and AI functions. | A current consumer product category; display size, field of view, comfort and social acceptability remain important constraints. A display does not automatically make glasses full, unobtrusive augmented reality. |
| Wrist EMG input | Detect muscle activity associated with subtle hand gestures. | Included in Meta’s announced Ray-Ban Display and Neural Band combination. This is a manufacturer-described consumer system, not evidence that any wearable can infer arbitrary intentions. |
| Wearable haptics | Deliver tactile cues through a wearable interface. | An active research area. A 2025 review in Nature Reviews Bioengineering discusses design issues such as where a device contacts the body, comfort at the skin interface and how faithfully it preserves feedback. |
| Soft haptic exosuits | Use a wearable garment to provide bodily feedback or interaction. | Kinethreads is a Future Interfaces Group prototype, not an established retail product. Its project page lists approximate prototype specifications, detailed below. |
| BCI-controlled assistive exoskeletons | Use brain-signal input as part of control for a specific assistive task. | A 2026 study tested a custom system with ten participants during real-time walking experiments. Its reported performance applies to that apparatus and protocol, not consumer mind-reading. |
| Sensory-feedback prostheses | Seek to return sensory information from a sensor-equipped prosthetic limb to the user. | DARPA’s HAPTIX program describes research goals involving precision control and sensory feedback, including bidirectional peripheral nerve interfaces. A program goal is not proof of broad availability or approval. |
Are AR glasses ready for everyday use?
Some smart glasses are consumer products, but “smart glasses,” “display glasses” and full augmented reality (AR) are not interchangeable. A camera-and-audio wearable can be useful without placing a wide, persistent digital image over the wearer’s view. A small display can add visual information without matching the field of view or unobtrusiveness people may expect from science fiction.

A 2025 review and perspective by Chakravarthula and Pattanaik in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications described existing AR eyeglass displays as bulky and said that, in the authors’ assessment, a socially acceptable display in an ordinary-eyeglasses form had not yet been realized. That assessment is a useful warning against treating any product announcement as proof that all-day AR is solved.
What determines whether glasses feel natural?
- Display capability and field of view: A small display can provide information, but it is not equivalent to a broad AR scene.
- Fit and comfort: The optics, weight and contact points affect how long someone is willing to wear a device.
- Input and output: Glasses may show or play information, while interaction can depend on voice, a companion device, gesture sensing or other inputs. The exact combination varies by product.
- Privacy and social context: Cameras and microphones raise practical questions about recording, consent and how the device is perceived by people nearby.
- Task: A brief notification or audio interaction asks less of the hardware than continuous, precisely placed visual overlays.
Meta announced Ray-Ban Display with a full-color display and a bundled EMG wristband called Meta Neural Band. Meta said the product became available for purchase in the United States on September 30, 2025. That is the company’s announcement, not independent confirmation of current stock or availability in other regions. Meta’s September 17, 2025 announcement also described its design aim as “technology that keeps you tuned in to the world around you, not distracted from it.” That is the manufacturer’s stated intent, not an independent finding about comfort, usefulness or adoption.

Can a wearable read your thoughts?
Not in the broad, effortless sense suggested by fiction. A BCI measures or classifies signals under a defined setup and uses them for a limited control task. Its performance depends on the sensors, signal-processing method, task, participant and experimental conditions; a result from one system should not be generalized to unrelated activities or consumer devices.
A September 2026 study by Kwon and colleagues in IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering combined a hybrid BCI, AR glasses and a custom lower-limb exoskeleton. Ten participants completed real-time walking experiments. The authors reported 95.06% average steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) classification accuracy for that experimental system. This figure describes classification in that study; it is not a measure of general thought-reading accuracy, everyday reliability or the ability to control arbitrary devices.

For current consumer interaction, muscle, voice, touch and eye movement are distinct from brain-signal control. Wrist EMG can detect a learned or intended muscle gesture without establishing that a device understands a user’s unspoken thoughts. The distinction matters: a useful interface may feel low-effort while still relying on a specific, trained signal and a narrow set of commands.
Do exoskeleton suits work outside the lab?
Exoskeletons are not one product category with one maturity level. A powered clinical or industrial system, a soft haptic garment and a research exoskeleton controlled through a BCI have different purposes, risks and engineering demands. A laboratory demonstration can establish that a particular configuration worked under a particular protocol; it does not by itself establish durability, independent everyday use, affordability or suitability for other users.

Kinethreads: a soft haptic suit prototype
The Future Interfaces Group describes Kinethreads as a soft full-body haptic exosuit prototype. Its project page lists an approximate prototype cost of $400, weight under 5 kg, a donning time of less than 30 seconds and force up to 120 N. These are project-page specifications, not independently verified retail specifications or a commercial price. They should not be read as evidence that a consumer suit with those characteristics is on sale.
Haptic wearables must do more than generate a sensation. The device has to fit the body, remain tolerable against skin, provide feedback that users can interpret and preserve the information the task needs. The 2025 review by Fleck and colleagues in Nature Reviews Bioengineering treats body location, skin interface, user comfort and feedback integrity as design considerations. A garment that is technically capable but uncomfortable or ambiguous may be a poor interface in practice.

HAPTIX and sensory feedback for prostheses
DARPA’s HAPTIX program pursues precision control and sensory feedback for sensor-equipped prosthetic hands and arms, including bidirectional peripheral nerve interfaces. The goal is assistive: connect prosthetic sensing and control with feedback to the user. This is a demanding research direction, not evidence that elective, general-purpose cybernetic implants are commercially available or broadly approved.

The pieces have different engineering burdens. Glasses must fit optical components into a wearable form while providing a useful display. Input systems need dependable signals that work for the intended gestures or task. Haptics and prostheses must create feedback that is both comfortable and meaningful. Powered suits add fit, actuation and task-specific safety requirements. Combining these systems does not erase those constraints; it can make comfort, reliability and setup more consequential.
Evidence level also matters. A manufacturer announcement can establish what a company says it has launched and where it says it is available. A research prototype can show a design direction and report its own specifications. A controlled study can measure performance for a defined apparatus and participant group. None alone establishes broad adoption, all-day usability or a reliable date when a capability will become commonplace.
What to look for when judging the next wearable announcement
- Identify the actual task: Is the device displaying information, detecting a gesture, delivering a tactile cue, supporting a limb or controlling a powered suit?
- Check the input and output: Find out what signal the system senses and what it returns to the user. “AI,” “neural” and “AR” do not explain the interface by themselves.
- Separate product from prototype: Look for evidence of retail availability or clinical use rather than assuming a lab demonstration is a purchasable device.
- Read the conditions behind performance numbers: Note participant count, task, apparatus and whether the result is from a controlled experiment.
- Consider the body interface: For glasses, assess display capability and fit; for haptics, ask where the device contacts the body and whether the feedback remains comfortable and interpretable.
- Verify region and date: Availability announced for one country at a past date does not establish current stock or release elsewhere.
The near-term reality is a set of specialized interfaces, with smart glasses and EMG gestures among the most visible consumer examples. Haptic suits, neural control and sensory-feedback prostheses point toward more intimate links between bodies and machines, but their evidence and intended uses remain distinct. No defensible timeline for commonplace, affordable all-day AR glasses or consumer powered exosuits follows from the developments described here.
