The Islanders’ most difficult contract decisions are about timing and flexibility, not simply whether a salary looks large. Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s three-year extension begins in 2026–27, while New York acquired center Brayden Schenn at the 2026 trade deadline. Those moves sit alongside substantial salary figures for established players and a projected rise in the NHL salary cap—but the available figures do not provide a complete team cap ledger or prove that any individual deal is a bargain or a mistake.

What makes an Islanders contract decision difficult?

A contract has to be judged against the season it covers, the player’s role, its length, and the roster options it leaves open. A large salary may be easier to absorb when the cap rises, but a higher ceiling does not erase the cost of a commitment or guarantee that a club can fit every desired player.

  • Term and age: How many seasons does the commitment cover, and what role is the player expected to fill during them?
  • Salary versus cap accounting: A salary listing is not automatically a cap hit, and neither figure alone shows a team’s available room.
  • Roster timeline: Does the move address an immediate need, a longer-term role, or both?
  • Flexibility: What other roster choices remain after the commitment? A projected cap increase can change the context, but it cannot make every expensive contract harmless.

Pageau’s extension starts a new three-year commitment

The Islanders’ official transaction record says Jean-Gabriel Pageau signed a three-year extension on March 6, 2026, with the new deal beginning in the 2026–27 season. The club’s extension announcement and the NHL.com report establish the term and start season. The announcement information available here does not state the extension’s annual value, so it is not possible to compare its cost precisely with other Islanders contracts on that basis.

The decision to assess is therefore clear in one respect and incomplete in another: New York committed to three seasons beginning in 2026–27, but the stated term alone cannot establish whether the deal is good value. That judgment also depends on the contract’s financial details and Pageau’s role over the commitment.

Schenn’s deadline acquisition was a separate roster bet

On March 6, 2026, the Islanders acquired center Brayden Schenn from St. Louis in a transaction that included Jonathan Drouin, goaltender Marcus Gidlof, and 2026 draft picks, according to the team’s trade-deadline recap and official transaction history. That is evidence of a roster-building choice, not evidence by itself that the deal succeeded or failed.

Schenn’s acquisition and Pageau’s extension raise different questions. The extension adds a defined term beginning in 2026–27; the trade involved players and draft assets as well as a veteran center. Evaluating either move requires more than the headline description: contract details, role, and the team’s other commitments all matter.

What the 2026–27 salary listings show—and what they do not

The NHL Players’ Association’s Islanders 2026–27 compensation page lists the following salary figures:

Player 2026–27 salary listed by the NHLPA
Mathew Barzal $9,150,000
Bo Horvat $8,500,000
Ryan Pulock $6,150,000
Simon Holmstrom $3,750,000

These are the page’s salary figures, not a complete accounting of the Islanders’ cap obligations. They do not, on their own, establish each player’s cap hit, current cap space, or the total room available for further moves. The four figures are also not a full roster list, so they should not be used to infer the team’s overall financial position.

Does a rising salary cap make a big contract less risky?

A July 2026 recap of an Islanders free-agency press conference reported a projection that the NHL salary-cap upper limit would reach $113.5 million in 2027–28, up $9.5 million from the preceding season’s limit as reported at the time. That figure is a dated projection, not a guarantee of the eventual limit.

A rising ceiling can make a fixed commitment represent a smaller share of the cap in a later season. But that comparison should use a verified contract cap hit and the ceiling for the relevant season; the salary listings above are not enough to calculate it. Nor does a larger future ceiling automatically free up room for a particular move: other contracts and roster needs still compete for it.

How much flexibility has management said it had?

In January 2026 coverage of the Islanders’ Palat and Soucy moves, general manager Mathieu Darche was quoted in connection with having “the salary cap flexibility” to take on a deal extending beyond the season. The report on those deals describes his position at that time. It does not establish the club’s present cap space, nor does it substitute for a complete cap ledger.

What can be concluded from the available contract picture?

The documented choices show why the Islanders’ challenge is to balance immediate roster decisions with future room: Pageau’s extension begins in 2026–27, Schenn arrived in a deadline trade, and several listed player salaries are substantial. The evidence does not establish the full terms or value of every Islanders contract, a verified current cap-space figure, or a league-wide comparison proving that NHL contracts are rising faster than the cap. The team transaction page records additional signings and assignments, but a transaction history is not a complete current roster or cap snapshot.
