The most useful decorating control for Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is the right Joy-Con 2, which comes with the console and can act as a mouse for placing indoor furniture, making Custom Designs and writing bulletin-board messages. For optional video features, the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera—or a compatible USB camera—is the accessory to consider. You do not need a camera for voice chat or a basic island visit: Switch 2 has a built-in microphone. The edition and a Nintendo Switch Online membership matter more to online play than any add-on hardware.

Which accessory makes the biggest difference to decorating?
The right Joy-Con 2 is the only item on this list that directly changes how you decorate: in the Switch 2 Edition, it can be used as a mouse for indoor furniture placement, Custom Designs and handwritten bulletin-board messages. It is an included controller, not an extra that every player has to buy. Nintendo describes the feature on its Switch 2 Edition page.
That makes the first question a compatibility one, not a shopping one. These mouse controls belong to Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. A controller accessory by itself does not add them to the original Switch version. If you already own the original game, Nintendo offers an edition upgrade pack; the free 3.0 update is separate and does not replace the Switch 2 Edition enhancements.

To use the mouse feature, detach the right Joy-Con 2 and set it on a suitable surface in mouse mode. Follow the on-screen prompts for the activity you are doing. The feature is meant for the named in-game tasks; do not assume an ordinary desktop mouse or a Pro Controller can stand in for the right Joy-Con 2 in this game. If the included Joy-Con is damaged, missing or occupied by another player, an additional Joy-Con 2 (R) may be useful as a replacement or spare—but it is not a decorating upgrade for someone who already has the included controller.

Nintendo also says the Joy-Con 2 Strap may improve stability during mouse use. That is a modest, optional aid, not a published speed or precision improvement. Two straps ship with the console, so a separate strap is primarily a replacement purchase.
Do I need the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera for online play?
No. A camera is needed for video features such as CameraPlay and GameChat video, but not for a standard island visit or voice chat. Nintendo says the Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, so players can start chatting without buying an external microphone; the official GameChat guide explains the feature.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Camera is the straightforward optional choice if you want friends to see your reactions in CameraPlay or want to appear on video in GameChat. Nintendo lists an adjustable wide-angle view and a privacy shutter among its features. The shutter is useful when you want a physical way to block the lens between calls. These video options are different from the basic voice communication available through the console’s microphone.

An existing USB camera may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility for every model. USB-C cameras can connect directly to the console; Nintendo’s GameChat guidance also describes connecting standard USB cameras to the dock. If you plan to reuse a camera, connect it and use the console’s Test USB Camera setting before arranging a call. A USB connector alone is not proof that a camera will work.

Camera choice does not increase an island’s player limit. Nor does buying a camera turn a GameChat room into a larger island session: those are separate features with separate limits. If you only want to talk, use the built-in microphone; if you want privacy while listening, a compatible headset is an optional comfort choice rather than a requirement for voice chat.
What do the Switch 2 Edition and Nintendo Switch Online unlock?
The Switch 2 Edition unlocks the game-specific enhancements, while Nintendo Switch Online is required for the game’s online features. Neither a camera nor an additional controller substitutes for these requirements. Nintendo’s edition information and its online play support page describe the separate requirements.
The free 3.0 update adds hotel-room decorating and Slumber Islands for players on both the original Switch and Switch 2 editions. The Switch 2 Edition adds its own enhancements, including right-Joy-Con-2 mouse controls, use of the console’s built-in microphone as a megaphone, CameraPlay and expanded online island sessions. Nintendo also lists enhanced resolution of up to 4K in TV mode when paired with a compatible display; that is a display-dependent feature, not an accessory effect on decorating or online capacity.
For online island play, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required. Nintendo also requires all participants in a multiplayer session to be on the same game version. The GameChat free-access period ended on March 31, 2026, so older advice saying GameChat remains free without a membership is out of date. Check Nintendo’s current terms for availability in your region and for any account or age-related restrictions.

How many players can visit an island or join GameChat?
Ordinary local-wireless or online island play supports up to eight players. An online island session can include up to 12 only when every participant has the Switch 2 Edition. A camera does not change either limit.
GameChat has a different capacity: a room can include up to 12 friends, while up to four participants can share video and/or screens at one time. Those figures describe the chat room, not the number of people who can visit an island together. Keep the distinction in mind when planning a group event: friends might be able to join the same chat room but still need the correct game edition for a 12-person island session.
GameChat setup has additional Nintendo Account and friend-approval conditions. Supervised younger users may need parental permissions. Check the current official GameChat instructions before a group call, especially if a child account is involved.

A Slumber Island is not an extra persistent home-island save. Nintendo’s home-island rule remains one island per console; do not choose a Slumber Island expecting it to give the console another permanent home-island slot. It is a separate collaborative feature, so plan around it as a shared decorating space rather than a replacement for anyone’s main island.
The free 3.0 update brings Slumber Islands to both game editions, but online visits still have their membership and account requirements. If your group wants a 12-person online island session, every player needs the Switch 2 Edition; the fact that the activity is collaborative does not waive that edition requirement.
Which optional extras are for items, comfort or storage?
Some accessories change what you can unlock or how comfortable a session feels, but they do not improve mouse placement or raise the online player limit. Choose them only for that specific purpose.
- Select amiibo: Scanning certain compatible Splatoon or The Legend of Zelda amiibo can provide collaboration items. Check the specific figure and its reward before buying; the feature does not mean every amiibo unlocks the same furniture. Nintendo’s update announcement identifies the collaboration content.
- Switch 2 Pro Controller: This is a conventional control and comfort option. It has a GameChat C Button and a CTIA-standard four-pole 3.5 mm audio jack. It does not replace the right Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for decorating.
- CTIA-standard headset: A headset can provide private listening when connected to the Pro Controller’s matching audio jack. An external microphone is not necessary to begin voice chat because the console has a built-in microphone.
- microSD Express card: Consider extra storage only if you need it for the console. Switch 2 expansion cards must be microSD Express; Nintendo lists a Samsung 256GB microSD Express card among its accessories. Extra storage has no established direct effect on furniture placement, CameraPlay quality or how many people can visit an island.
Do not confuse console storage with the game’s item storage. Nintendo says the free update raises home-storage capacity to as much as 9,000 items. That is an in-game capacity, not the capacity of a microSD card and not a reason to buy one.

How should I prepare for an island visit or decorating session?
- Confirm the game edition. Use the Switch 2 Edition for its edition-specific controls, CameraPlay and expanded online session features. If the group is aiming for a 12-person online island, confirm that every participant has that edition.
- Update the game on every console. Nintendo’s support page lists version 3.0.3, released April 29, 2026, as the latest listed update at the time of this research. Nintendo says players must use the same version for multiplayer, so check the current update listing before scheduling rather than treating that version number as permanent.
- Confirm online eligibility. Make sure participants have the required Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features. For GameChat, check friend approval and any parental permissions needed for supervised accounts.
- Test optional video hardware early. For an existing USB camera, use the console’s Test USB Camera setting. If video is not important, skip the camera; it is not needed for an island visit or voice chat.
- Pick the right shared space. Use a Slumber Island when members want to collaborate away from their main islands. Treat it as an activity space, not an additional permanent home-island save.
- Enable island backup if you need it. This game does not support ordinary Save Data Cloud protection for its island. Nintendo Switch Online members can enable the game’s separate island backup, which is not turned on by default. Check the game’s island backup setting instead of assuming a standard cloud save is protecting the island.

Which purchases can most players skip?
Most players can skip an extra Joy-Con 2, a separate strap, a camera, a Pro Controller, a headset and a microSD Express card unless they have a specific need for one. The included right Joy-Con 2 already provides the game’s mouse decorating controls; the console microphone supports voice chat; and ordinary island visits do not require video.
The two purchases that change the feature set are the Switch 2 Edition (or upgrade pack if you own the original game) and Nintendo Switch Online for online features. Add a camera only if you want video, select amiibo only for a verified collaboration reward, and storage only when you genuinely need more console capacity. This keeps the choice tied to the activity instead of treating every listed accessory as essential.
