You do not need—and cannot newly download—The Sims 4: Legacy Edition. EA removed Legacy Edition from PC and Mac on December 12, 2022. The supported Sims 4 base game has been free since October 18, 2022, so install that version if your computer meets EA’s current requirements. Legacy Edition was a temporary compatibility build for existing players on 32-bit Windows PCs or non-Metal Macs, not a cheaper or lighter edition for any older computer.
The practical choice is therefore straightforward: verify your operating system, graphics support, memory and storage; use the supported game on qualifying hardware; and follow EA’s save-transfer procedure if you are moving from an old Legacy installation.

Do I need Sims 4 Legacy Edition or the standard version?
For a new installation, choose the supported standard game. Legacy Edition is no longer offered by EA, and a computer that cannot meet the current requirements has no official Legacy download as a fallback.
Legacy was created for a narrow compatibility problem. Some existing players still used 32-bit Windows or Macs without Apple’s Metal graphics framework. The normal game moved ahead with newer operating-system and graphics requirements, so EA supplied a separate build for those owners. It was never a premium tier, a performance mode, or the recommended choice for every low-spec computer.

If your Windows installation is 64-bit and your processor, graphics hardware, memory and storage satisfy EA’s current requirements, install the free supported base game. If your machine is 32-bit, first investigate a supported 64-bit upgrade or use another computer. Do not pay for a disc or download advertised as a current Legacy Edition release.
Can I still download Sims 4 Legacy Edition?
No. EA states that The Sims 4: Legacy Edition has been unavailable on PC and Mac since December 12, 2022. Websites offering an unofficial installer cannot restore EA support, guarantee safe files or make incompatible hardware meet the game’s requirements.
The supported base game is a separate answer to the price question: EA made it free on October 18, 2022. Optional expansion, game and stuff packs remain separate purchases, but you do not need to buy the base game to begin on supported hardware.

A physical package is not an alternative Legacy channel. EA says a PC disc installation requires a DVD drive, while packaged Mac installation discs are incompatible. Download the free base game through EA’s current PC/Mac distribution path instead of relying on a used disc or a disc labeled “Legacy.”
What are the current Windows requirements?
A supported Windows computer needs a 64-bit operating system. EA’s current minimum listing includes Windows 10, 4 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free storage; the same listing also specifies processor and graphics requirements that you should check against your exact hardware before installing.

Windows checks to make before downloading
- Confirm system type. In Windows, open Settings, select System, choose About, and read “System type.” It must report a 64-bit operating system. A 64-bit-capable processor running a 32-bit Windows installation still requires an operating-system upgrade or reinstall.
- Confirm the Windows version. EA’s current minimum names Windows 10. A newer supported Windows release may qualify, but an older release should not be assumed compatible merely because the computer is powerful enough.
- Check memory and storage. Allow at least 4 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free space, then leave additional room for updates, saves and optional content. Freeing only the exact minimum can leave an update unable to complete.
- Compare the CPU and GPU. Use EA’s current requirements page for the processor family, graphics model and graphics-memory details. Integrated graphics are not automatically disqualified, but they still must meet the listed specification.
- Install the current launcher. EA’s app replaced Origin as the main PC/Mac launcher. Sign in with the account that owns any existing game or add-ons, then install the supported base game from that library.
Does my old Mac need Legacy Edition?
Mac players should check Metal support, macOS version, RAM, storage and the remaining graphics requirements—not a vague label such as “old Mac.” The supported Mac minimum specifies macOS 10.15 Catalina, 4 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free space, and EA’s app also requires Catalina or later. The Mac version of The Sims 4 has always been 64-bit, so the historical Mac issue was lack of Metal support, not a 32-bit Mac game.
Mac checks to make before installing
- Identify the Mac. Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and note the model, year, chip or processor and installed memory.
- Check macOS. In About This Mac, read the macOS version. For a new installation, use Catalina 10.15 or later as EA’s current baseline. A version upgrade alone does not prove that the graphics hardware supports Metal.
- Verify Metal capability. Compare the Mac’s exact model and GPU with Apple’s Metal-support information or the model’s technical specifications. If the GPU is not Metal-capable, the supported game will not become compatible simply because macOS is updated.
- Check space and memory. Reserve at least 4 GB of RAM and 25 GB of free storage, with extra room for updates and add-ons.
- Use the EA app. Install the current app only on a supported macOS version, sign in, and download the free base game from the account library.
EA’s older Legacy help wording mentions El Capitan in connection with historical systems. That wording should not be treated as a current new-installation promise; EA’s dedicated requirements and app guidance now specify Catalina or later.

The meaningful differences are availability and compatibility purpose, not a premium-versus-basic feature tier. The table below describes the historical Legacy build alongside the game EA supports now.

The add-on dates and save restriction are historical information from an older EA forum explanation, not a current purchase comparison. A save that transfers successfully does not prove that every old mod or every piece of downloadable content remains compatible.
Will Sims 4 run on my 32-bit PC?
Not through an official Legacy download. EA no longer distributes Legacy Edition, and the supported game requires a 64-bit Windows operating system. Check whether your processor and computer model can support a 64-bit Windows installation, then verify the full CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements.

If an upgrade is possible
- Back up personal files before changing Windows editions or reinstalling.
- Confirm that drivers and activation details are available for the 64-bit installation.
- Install the supported Windows version, update graphics drivers, and recheck EA’s requirements.
- Install the EA app and the free base game after the operating system is ready.
If an upgrade is not possible
There is no supported way to turn that 32-bit machine into a current Sims 4 installation by using an old disc, a compatibility setting or an unofficial Legacy package. Use another computer that meets all requirements or consider a supported console only as a separate platform; computer saves and computer add-on purchases do not carry over to consoles.

EA’s documented method preserves the old folder first, copies it to the destination computer and lets the supported game rebuild the expected folder name. The EA app does not cloud-store these local saves, so use a USB flash drive or other portable storage if the computers are separate.
- Close the game. Exit The Sims 4 and the EA app on the old computer so files are not changing during the copy.
- Make a safety copy. Copy the complete folder

- Restore custom content cautiously. Mods may need retesting. Add them back in small batches, launch the game after each batch and remove any package that causes errors or missing content. Keep a separate copy of the unmodified save folder.
What if the saves do not appear?
- Confirm the final path is
Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/saves, not a nested path such asThe Sims 4/The Sims 4 Legacy Edition. - Check that the folder was copied after the game was closed and that the account has permission to read the Documents folder.
- Temporarily remove custom-content files and check the game with the clean save folder.
- Restore the original backup if a save was overwritten or a mod damaged the load.
Do Legacy saves guarantee that my DLC and mods will work?
No. EA provides a route for moving saves, but that is not a compatibility guarantee for every expansion, game pack, stuff pack or mod. Legacy’s historical add-on cutoff and inability to open saves from newer standard-game builds show why content must be checked separately.
After migration, update or replace mods only when their creators identify support for the current game version. Test gameplay with no mods first, then add packages in batches. If an expansion is missing, verify that you are signed into the account that owns it and that the EA app has finished updating entitlements before troubleshooting the save.
Is a console version a substitute for a PC or Mac migration?
No. Console editions are separate platform products. EA says computer saves and add-on purchases do not transfer to consoles, so moving from a Legacy computer installation to a console means starting under the console platform’s ownership and save rules.

A console can be an alternative way to play, but it should not be presented as a transparent continuation of a computer library. Keep the original computer backup even if you decide to change platforms.

No. The Sims: Legacy Collection is a rerelease of the first Sims game. The Sims 4: Legacy Edition was a compatibility build of the fourth game for older PC and Mac configurations. Similar wording does not make their saves, operating-system requirements or add-ons interchangeable.
How should I decide what to install?
Use this sequence rather than searching for a Legacy installer:
- Windows 64-bit and fully supported: install the free supported Sims 4 base game through the EA app.
- Windows 32-bit: determine whether a supported 64-bit Windows installation is possible. If not, use another qualifying computer; Legacy is not available.
- Mac with Metal, Catalina or later, and adequate specifications: install the supported game through the EA app.
- Mac without Metal: check the exact hardware before spending time on a macOS upgrade. A newer macOS version cannot add Metal support to an incompatible GPU.

Will upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit Windows delete my Sims saves?
A Windows upgrade or reinstall can affect files, so copy the entire Sims 4 folder to external storage before changing the operating system. Restore the backup only after the supported game has been installed and closed once.
Why does the EA app say my Mac is unsupported after I update macOS?
The game requires Metal-capable graphics hardware as well as a current macOS version. Updating macOS cannot add Metal support to a GPU that lacks it, so verify the Mac model and graphics hardware.
Are Sims 4 saves stored in the EA cloud automatically?
EA’s guidance treats these saves as local files rather than automatically cloud-stored data. Use a flash drive or other portable storage for a manual backup and transfer.
Can I run the supported Sims 4 and keep my old Legacy folder?
Yes. Keep the original Legacy folder as an untouched backup, and work from a copied folder renamed to The Sims 4. This gives you a recovery point if a save or mod behaves unexpectedly.
