When several coding agents run at once, the hardest problem may not be how many tokens they use; it may be noticing which one needs you. That is the problem Bargan Constantin says prompted ccdeck: a local dashboard for Claude Code and Codex sessions that aims to make agent activity and waits for human input easier to see. The product details and measurements below are claims from Constantin’s October 1, 2026 article on DEV Community, not independently audited findings.
Why attention became the bottleneck
Constantin describes a familiar failure mode for anyone running multiple coding agents: four agents were working, but one had stopped at a permission prompt. He discovered the blockage only after clicking through terminal tabs. The agent was not necessarily slow; the operator had not seen that it needed a decision.
That distinction matters. Token use can be counted, but a person still has to notice questions, approvals, and completed turns. At the same time, following a main agent, its subagents, and their tool calls through an interleaved terminal scroll can make it difficult to reconstruct what happened. Constantin’s motivating questions were practical: “what is running right now?”, “what did that subagent do?”, “which one is stuck?”, and “what is this costing?”
What ccdeck is meant to show
Constantin describes ccdeck as a local dashboard for Claude Code and Codex sessions. Its purpose is to make activity easier to scan and bring sessions that appear to need human attention into view, rather than requiring the operator to inspect each terminal in turn.

Waits are prioritized by age
According to the article, sessions stopped for human input rise to the top of the dashboard, ordered by how long they have waited. A count in the top bar points to the oldest wait. This is a triage aid: it helps identify where attention may be needed first, rather than answering the prompt or granting approval on the user’s behalf.
It does not remove the need to use the terminal
Constantin’s stated boundary is that ccdeck can tell the operator which session needs attention, but the operator still switches to the terminal to respond. The dashboard is intended as a visibility layer, not a replacement for interacting with the coding agent.

What “read-only” means here—and what it does not
The author says ccdeck’s hook posts events to the local dashboard and cannot allow, deny, or rewrite tool calls. He also qualifies a strict “read-only” description: ccdeck manages two tools it depends on and refreshes the Codex token it reads quota with. So the narrower claim is about not intervening in tool calls, not about having no operational role or handling no credentials.
What the article says about data and network activity
Constantin says session prompts, files, project names, and paths remain on the machine. The same article also lists activity that does leave it: version checks, tools ccdeck installs, quota reads signed with the user’s credentials, status-page access, and usage reports about ccdeck itself. Usage reporting is described as enabled by default and disableable with a switch.

Those statements describe the creator’s account of the product’s data practices; they are not an independent privacy audit. A user evaluating the software should distinguish the locally retained session content from the outbound activities the author explicitly lists, and consult the project’s own current documentation before relying on any privacy assumption.
Important visibility limits
Codex approval waits are not shown
Constantin says Codex does not record an approval request in its log, so ccdeck does not show Codex sessions as waiting for approval. A dashboard view of waits is therefore not a complete view across both supported tools.

The displayed tool name can be inferred
The article says the tool name shown beside a wait is an inference, and that the interface labels it accordingly. Treat that label as a clue about the likely context, not definitive evidence of exactly which tool is blocked.

Constantin says the project’s first commit was on June 12, 2026: a live graph of Claude Code agents fed by Claude Code hooks. He reports that versions 0.1 through 0.6 were committed that day, and that by late September 2026 the repository had more than 3,000 commits and about 390 tagged releases. These are the creator’s reported counts, not independently verified repository statistics.

The article also reports whole-process timings for a stalled-deck hook scenario: 1.84 seconds idle and up to 2.19 seconds on a loaded machine. Constantin says an earlier internal deadline missed shell startup, Node startup, and reading a large payload; he then changed the cap to begin at process start and describes a declared three-second timeout as a backstop. The article does not establish an independent measurement method, so these figures should not be treated as a general benchmark or a guarantee of latency on another system.
How ccdeck is distributed
The creator’s article offers ccdeck through npx ccdeck and as a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, and identifies the project as AGPL-3.0 licensed. The article does not establish that every distribution option or supported behavior is unchanged over time; check the project’s current instructions and license before installing or integrating it.
Who may find the idea useful
ccdeck’s stated use case is most relevant when an operator runs several Claude Code or Codex sessions and loses track of their separate states in terminal tabs. Its central benefit is prioritization: surface a session that may be waiting so the human can decide whether to intervene. It is less useful as a complete cross-tool approval monitor because the author says Codex approval requests are not recorded in the log ccdeck reads. And it should not be mistaken for an autonomous supervisor: the human still handles the prompt in the terminal.
The underlying argument is modest but useful: adding agents does not eliminate the human bottleneck if the person cannot see where input is required. In Constantin’s framing, tokens matter, but the scarce resource he ran out of was attention.
