Its renewed visibility is clearest not in a measured surge in sales or participants, but in the continued work of enthusiasts, museums, and archives to restore old machines, document their history, and keep legacy software accessible.
What is retro-computing?
Retro-computing covers several ways of engaging with older computer systems: using original hardware, restoring and collecting machines, studying their design and cultural history, and running their software through emulation. It is broader than nostalgia. A restored computer can be a research object or an operating exhibit; an emulator can let people interact with software whose original platform is no longer readily available.
The term spans personal computers, home computers, consoles, and arcade machines. These activities overlap, but they preserve different things: a physical machine and its operation, or the software and digital artifacts associated with it.
Why did interest in old computers develop?
Computing began as hands-on experimentation
Early personal computing had a strong do-it-yourself character. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History describes hobbyists buying systems they had to program themselves, and identifies the Altair 8800 as launching the U.S. personal-computer industry. That history helps explain why older machines remain compelling: they expose computing as something people built, configured, and learned by doing, rather than only as a service delivered by modern devices. Discontinued platforms acquired a second life
When 8-bit and 16-bit home-computing platforms stopped being produced and distributed, their hardware and software did not simply disappear. A scholarly history of fifty years of home computing describes hobbyists virtualizing older home computers, consoles, and arcade machines. Emulation helped make discontinued platforms usable and studyable after their original commercial life had ended. That is one factor in retro-computing’s development, not a single explanation for it. What does the retro-computing revival look like today?
Restoration keeps physical machines available
Restoration involves more than making an old computer power on. The Vintage Computer Museum describes researching, restoring, and documenting historic machines, and keeping them running where possible. The National Museum of Computing likewise includes conservation, restoration, reconstruction, display, demonstration, and research in its work. Exhibits and education bring computer history to visitors
Museums also make computing history accessible through public-facing interpretation. The Centre for Computing History describes exhibits, interactive experiences, events, and educational programs as part of its approach. New acquisitions add to the historical record
On January 27, 2026, The Strong National Museum of Play announced an acquisition of materials connected to Atari’s home-computer and console divisions. The collection includes hundreds of pieces of computer media as well as original schematics and engineering drawings. The museum said the material would support research into early home computing and fan-led preservation. The announcement illustrates how archival work can preserve not only machines, but also the design records and software media needed to understand them. How do people preserve old computer software?
Emulation uses modern computer systems to run historical software. In a July 2025 report, Eric Kaltman, Winnie Schwaid-Lindner, Drey Jonathan, Andrew Borman, Alex Garnett, and Larry Masinter describe emulation as a growing practice in libraries, archives, museums, and galleries, and as essential to conserving and providing ongoing access to the digital past. It can let people interact with historical data and digital artifacts in ways more consistent with their creators’ intentions. CLIR, An Overview of Emulation as a Preservation Method (July 2025).
Emulation and physical restoration solve different preservation problems. Restoring a machine focuses on its physical condition and operation; emulation focuses on running legacy software and providing access to digital artifacts. The former involves maintaining aging components, while the latter requires setting up and maintaining an emulator environment. Neither method automatically reproduces every aspect of the other: emulated software runs in a modern environment, while a functioning original machine preserves a direct encounter with the historical hardware.

Is emulation as good as using original hardware?
There is no universally better option; it depends on what someone wants to preserve or experience. Emulation is useful when the goal is access to legacy software without relying on a working original machine. Original hardware matters when the physical machine itself is the subject of study or the desired experience. The available preservation sources explain these different purposes but do not establish that emulation perfectly reproduces every feature of original hardware.

Museums, archives, and preservation groups document continuing activity, but the evidence available does not establish a representative participation count, growth rate, or market size for the hobby. Institutional collection totals and acquisition announcements describe individual organizations, not how many people are involved. The defensible meaning of “rise” is renewed visibility and ongoing preservation work—not a quantified claim that the hobby is growing at a particular rate.
