The Mortuary Assistant is a first-person horror game about Rebecca Owens, a mortuary-science graduate working an overnight shift at River Fields Mortuary. You embalm bodies and complete ordinary mortuary procedures, but the shift becomes a supernatural investigation: bodies change, clues appear, a demon must be identified, and a banishment ritual must be chosen. The story is spread across multiple shifts, while an adaptive Haunt System selects disturbances based on your location, story progress, and the scares you have already experienced.
What is The Mortuary Assistant about?
Rebecca Owens has finished a mortuary-science degree and is apprenticed at River Fields Mortuary. She is called in for a late-night embalming shift, expecting routine work. Instead, the bodies behave abnormally, the mortician contacts her, and Rebecca discovers that she cannot simply leave the building.
The official premise frames the mystery around three connected questions: what is happening to Rebecca, what history is buried at River Fields, and what larger secret links the mortuary to the entities appearing there. The game does not deliver that information in one opening cutscene. It distributes revelations across repeated shifts, so the work you perform is also the way you uncover the story.

The game was developed by DarkStone Digital and published by DreadXP. Its original release date was 2 August 2022. The Steam listing describes more than 10 hours of content, with additional time for players who investigate thoroughly or replay shifts to see different events. That figure is a developer estimate, not a guaranteed completion time for every player.

How the story is structured
One shift is not the whole narrative
A successful banishment does not resolve every mystery. The storefront description presents each banished demon as only one piece of a larger puzzle. In practical terms, the first completed shift establishes the central threat and your responsibilities, while later shifts add context about Rebecca, River Fields, and the entities involved.
This structure is important because the game is designed around returning to work. You are not replaying a conventional linear campaign merely to repeat the same scenes; each shift combines familiar procedures with new possibilities for evidence, disturbances, and story information.
What is and is not known about the endings
Authoritative store and developer material does not publish a complete canonical chart of every ending, every demon identity, or the exact order of every lore revelation. Guides that present an exhaustive ending list may be describing a particular interpretation, version, or spoiler-focused investigation rather than an official master sequence. The reliable description is narrower: multiple shifts matter, banishments are individual pieces of the puzzle, and replaying is part of the intended design.

What you actually do during a shift
The core loop deliberately alternates ordinary mortuary work with occult investigation. The routine gives you tasks to perform; the interruptions force you to decide whether a detail is a normal part of the job or evidence that the shift has changed.

- Begin the mortuary work. You take responsibility for the bodies assigned to the shift and start the embalming process. The game expects you to handle the ordinary jobs of the mortuary rather than immediately chase a supernatural objective.
- Move through the facility and inspect what changes. While working, you watch and listen for abnormalities. Bodies, rooms, objects, and the building itself can provide clues or become the site of a haunting.
- Record and interpret evidence. The investigation is integrated into the work instead of being a separate detective screen. You compare what you observe with the occult information available to Rebecca and determine which entity is responsible.
- Complete the identification. Before a banishment can be attempted, you must identify the demonic entity connected to the shift. Mistaking a sign or rushing the process can send you toward the wrong conclusion.
- Attempt the banishment. Once the evidence points to a demon, you select and perform the corresponding banishment. This is the shift’s supernatural objective, but it is also one step in the wider story rather than a final explanation of everything.
- Return for later shifts. The game is built for repetition. New shifts provide further narrative context and expose you to events that may not have appeared previously.
The result is a tension between procedure and attention. You have concrete work to finish, yet you must remain alert to evidence that changes the meaning of that work. That tension is why the game can feel different from a horror title that simply moves from one scripted scare to the next.
How the Haunt System works
An adaptive pool of scares
Creator Brian Clarke described a bespoke Haunt System containing approximately 100 possible scares. The game evaluates conditions such as your current location, progress through the story, and which events you have already seen, then selects an event that fits the current shift. The figure is an approximate design pool, not a promise that every player will encounter exactly 100 unique scenes.
Because the selection is conditional, two players can perform much of the same work and still encounter different disturbances. A room that appears quiet in one shift may become important in another, and an event you have already seen is less likely to be selected in the same way on a later run.
Scares happen while you retain control
Clarke’s stated design goal was to let players notice a disturbance while still controlling Rebecca instead of cutting away to a fixed cinematic jump scare. His explanation is that “The key is that the player has something to do that distracts them from the elephant in the room.” The embalming process and other tasks therefore serve two purposes: they advance the shift and occupy your attention while something unsettling develops around you.

Events build from small to large
The system is designed to escalate. Events can begin with a minor irregularity, develop into a medium disturbance, and culminate in a larger manifestation. The escalation is not necessarily a single scripted chain that every player sees in the same order; it is a way of shaping intensity across a shift.
Clarke compared the intended effect to “watching a movie and noticing something in the background.” An event can be positioned differently for different players, so the same underlying idea may be noticed from another angle, in another room, or at another point in the work. The horror comes from recognizing that something is wrong before the game demands that you look directly at it.
Why replaying changes the experience
Replayability is part of the production goal, not an accidental consequence of randomization. A 2021 developer update identified replay value and additional background for Rebecca as deliberate priorities. The adaptive Haunt System supports that goal by reducing the chance that every shift becomes a fixed checklist of identical scares.
There are three practical reasons to replay:
- The story is distributed across shifts. One banishment contributes to the larger mystery but does not reveal every piece of it.
- The event pool responds to your history. Location, story progress, and previously seen scares influence what can occur next.
- Investigation rewards attention. Players who inspect rooms, listen for changes, and keep working through interruptions are more likely to notice context that a rushed run misses.
Replayability does not mean every run is wholly procedurally generated. The mortuary procedures and the broad objective remain recognizable. The variation lies in which disturbances appear, how they are placed, and what story information becomes available during that shift.

What the Definitive Edition adds
The Definitive Edition announcement dated 2 August 2024 describes a content and technical update rather than a separate replacement game. It adds optional ways to play, new material for repeat visits, and performance and stability work.

On PC and Nintendo Switch, the announcement says the Definitive Edition update was free for existing owners. The same announcement says it launched on PlayStation and Xbox. Availability can still depend on the store and region, so check the platform listing you intend to use for the current edition name.

You want the complete narrative experience
Use the normal story shifts. They preserve the intended rhythm of mortuary procedure, investigation, haunting, identification, and banishment. The added lore and events in the Definitive Edition make it the fuller choice when that edition is available on your platform.
You mainly want embalming work
The Definitive Edition’s embalming-only mode removes the need to pursue the complete supernatural loop for every session. It is suited to players who are interested in the procedural side of the mortuary or who want a lower-intensity way to practice the work.

You are sensitive to horror content
The Steam listing carries a mature-content notice covering disturbing imagery, drug references, self-harm moments, and strong language. Those warnings apply to the overall game, not merely to optional haunt events. Review the platform’s content descriptors before playing, especially if you are avoiding self-harm themes or graphic imagery.
You are choosing a platform
The 2024 announcement identifies PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox availability for the Definitive Edition. Input, performance, and store packaging can vary by platform; the broad gameplay loop and story structure are the same concepts described above.
How to approach your first shift
The game gives you the best chance of understanding its systems when you treat the shift as both a job and an investigation.
- Learn the routine before chasing every oddity. Embalming is not filler; it is the activity that keeps the shift moving and creates opportunities for a haunting to occur.
- Pay attention to where an event happens. Location is one of the conditions the Haunt System considers, so the room and your position can be meaningful clues.
- Notice changes instead of assuming a scripted jump scare. The system is built around disturbances that can unfold while you remain in control. Small visual or audio inconsistencies may matter before a larger event appears.
- Do not treat one completed banishment as the ending. The game’s own description presents each demon as one part of the puzzle. Continue through later shifts if you want the wider story.
- Expect variation, not total randomness. The mortuary tasks remain recognizable, while the event selection and story context can change from run to run.
The bottom line on The Mortuary Assistant
The Mortuary Assistant works because its horror is attached to a job you must keep doing. Rebecca’s embalming duties provide a familiar procedure, while the Haunt System interrupts that procedure with adaptive events selected from an approximately 100-scare pool. The story unfolds over multiple shifts, and each banishment advances the mystery without exhausting it. The Definitive Edition is the broadest version, adding haunt events, bodies, lore, an embalming-only mode, a seasonal event, achievements, and technical improvements.
