Teams shortcuts vary by platform: Windows and Mac have separate desktop and web mappings, and Microsoft also documents shortcuts for iPad. For example, Windows desktop Search uses Ctrl+E, while Windows web Search uses Ctrl+Alt+E. Use the tables below to find the mapping for your version.
These shortcuts follow Microsoft’s current reference for a US keyboard layout. A plus sign means press the keys together; a comma means press them in sequence. If a shortcut does not work, first check which Teams version and keyboard layout you are using.
How to open the Teams shortcut list
In Teams, select Settings and more (the three-dot button near your profile picture), then choose Keyboard shortcuts.
- Windows desktop or web: press Ctrl+. (Ctrl plus period) or Alt+/.
- Mac desktop or web: press Command+..
On Windows, the shortcut dialog also includes Use shortcuts from other apps. This is a dropdown that lets you choose how Teams handles shortcut behavior from third-party apps.

The first column is for the Windows desktop app. The second is for Teams in a browser. “No shortcut” means Microsoft does not currently document a keyboard shortcut for that action in that version.

Temporary unmute has a prerequisite. Go to Settings → Privacy and turn on Keyboard shortcut to unmute. Then hold Ctrl+Spacebar while speaking. Release the keys to mute again.
Windows app-bar and focus shortcuts

The number shortcuts follow the app’s current sequential order. For example, if Calendar is moved into the first app-bar position, Ctrl+1 opens Calendar. The numbers are not permanently assigned to particular Teams apps. Microsoft also notes that focus movement can vary with the active view and settings.
Mac Teams shortcuts
Use Command in place of Ctrl for most Mac desktop actions, but do not assume every web shortcut is identical. The browser version has its own Mac table.

Slash commands in Teams
Slash commands are separate from keyboard shortcuts. In a chat, channel, meeting conversation, or the search bar, type a forward slash immediately followed by a command name, such as /chat. Select the command and press Enter.

Microsoft currently documents these built-in commands:
/apps, /available, /away, /brb, /busy, /chat, /code, /createworkflow, /dnd, /gif, /goto, /hide, /hidelivecaptions, /leavechat, /loop, /meetnow, /mute, /notifications, /offline, /participants, /record, /reset, /schedulemessage, /settings, /shortcuts, /showlivecaptions, /starttranscription, /stoplivetranscription, /unmute, and /window.
Installed apps can add commands such as /Github, /Youtube, and /Jira. Command locations and availability depend on where you type, the apps installed in your organization, your Teams version, and organization policy. Microsoft currently documents built-in Teams slash commands as available only in Teams desktop, not on mobile.
Using /goto
- Select the Teams search bar.
- Type /goto and press Enter.
- Type the name of the chat or channel.
- Select the destination and press Enter.
The faster keyboard alternative is Ctrl+G on Windows or Command+G on Mac. Type a channel name or participant’s name, then select the conversation.

Customizing Teams shortcuts
Microsoft supports shortcut customization in the Teams desktop app. To edit one:
- Open Settings and more → Keyboard shortcuts.
- Select the shortcut you want to change.
- Press Tab until Edit shortcut is selected.
- Press Enter, then press the new key combination.
- Press Tab until Save is selected.
- Press Enter.
If a combination is already used by Teams, Windows, macOS, your browser, or another application, the competing shortcut may take priority. The shortcut dialog is the best place to check the active mapping.

- Using desktop shortcuts in a browser: Windows desktop Search is Ctrl+E, but Windows web Search is Ctrl+Alt+E.
- Expecting every web action to have a shortcut: the web app has no current shortcuts for actions such as opening a conversation in a new window or toggling video on Windows.
- Using an old answer-call shortcut: Alt+R is not the current universal answer-call shortcut. Windows uses Ctrl+Shift+A for video and Ctrl+Shift+S for audio; Windows web uses Alt+Shift+A and Alt+Shift+S.
- Assuming app-bar numbers are permanent: Ctrl+1 opens whichever app is currently first, not a permanently assigned app.
- Trying slash commands on a phone: Microsoft currently documents built-in slash commands for desktop Teams only.
- Forgetting the keyboard layout: Microsoft’s reference uses a US keyboard layout. Keys can map differently on other layouts.
- Trying temporary unmute without enabling it: turn on Settings → Privacy → Keyboard shortcut to unmute first.

What is the shortcut to search in Teams?
Use Ctrl+E in the Windows desktop app, Ctrl+Alt+E in the Windows web app, Command+E on Mac desktop, or Option+Command+E in Teams web on Mac.
What is the Teams shortcut for joining a meeting?
Use Ctrl+J to join an event. From meeting details, use Alt+Shift+J on Windows. The Mac shortcut reference should be checked in Teams because the available command can vary by view.
Why does Ctrl+Spacebar not temporarily unmute me?
