Verdict: The ThinkPad P70 was an unusually capable 2016 mobile workstation, combining optional Xeon/ECC memory, Quadro graphics, four RAM slots, up to four internal drives, Thunderbolt 3 and legacy expansion. In 2026 it makes sense mainly as an inexpensive, carefully inspected used workstation—not as a modern portable laptop. Its age shows in sixth-generation processors, old professional GPUs, heavy weight, uncertain battery health and limited current support.

This retrospective separates Lenovo’s platform specifications from AnandTech’s June 30, 2016 review sample. Lenovo now lists the P70 as withdrawn, so availability, warranty and configuration depend on the used market. See the official withdrawn-product page.

What the ThinkPad P70 was

The P70 was Lenovo’s 17.3-inch professional workstation, positioned above conventional ThinkPads for CAD, engineering, 3D content creation, scientific work and enterprise deployment. Its defining idea was not thinness: it offered workstation-class graphics, optional ECC memory, extensive service access and desktop-replacement connectivity in a transportable chassis.

  • Sixth-generation Intel Core i7 or Xeon E3 v5 processors.
  • NVIDIA Quadro M-series graphics.
  • Four DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets and a platform maximum of 64 GB.
  • Up to two M.2 drives plus two 2.5-inch drives, with one 2.5-inch position potentially replacing the optical drive.
  • Thunderbolt 3, ExpressCard/34, a docking connector and a full set of legacy ports.
  • Optional Pantone/X-Rite color sensor, WWAN, fingerprint reader, smart-card reader and Intel vPro.

Lenovo’s complete specification sheet is available as the ThinkPad P70 PSREF PDF.

What AnandTech tested

AnandTech’s historical review used a high-end configuration, so its benchmark and display results do not represent every P70 sold.

Component AnandTech review unit P70 platform range
Processor Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 Core i7-6700HQ, Core i7-6820HQ, Xeon E3-1505M v5 or Xeon E3-1575M v5
Graphics NVIDIA Quadro M4000M Quadro M600M, M3000M, M4000M or M5000M
Display 17.3-inch UHD, 3840×2160 17.3-inch FHD IPS or UHD IPS; optional touch on some configurations
Storage Samsung SM951 NVMe SSD Up to two M.2 and two 2.5-inch drives
Reported price in 2016 Approximately $3,350 USD Varied by configuration and region

The CPU and system results are preserved in AnandTech’s indexed coverage at the performance section; the original article now redirects to AnandTech’s forums.

Why choose a mobile Xeon?

The reviewed Xeon E3-1505M v5 is a 45 W, four-core/eight-thread processor with a 2.8 GHz base clock, up to 3.7 GHz turbo and 8 MB cache. AnandTech found it generally ahead of comparable Skylake Core i7 mobile chips in multithreaded work, while web use and other lightly threaded tasks were not dramatically faster. A desktop-CPU Clevo workstation was substantially quicker in some tests because it could sustain a higher power envelope.

The practical Xeon advantages were ECC memory support and vPro/enterprise features, not a transformational everyday speed increase. Lenovo states that ECC functionality is supported only with a Xeon processor. A Core i7 P70 with ordinary memory is therefore not equivalent to a Xeon/ECC workstation; buyers who do not need error correction can often sensibly choose the less expensive Core i7 version.

Quadro graphics: workstation behavior, not gaming value

The Quadro M4000M was based on the same broad generation as GTX 970M-class hardware but used professional drivers and application certifications. AnandTech’s gaming comparisons were unremarkable, yet SPECviewperf showed cases in which the Quadro beat a nominally stronger GeForce because the workload and driver path favored professional graphics.

That distinction still matters when assessing a used P70. CAD or visualization software that benefits from certified Quadro drivers may behave better than gaming benchmarks suggest, while games and unsupported modern applications may not. The optional M600M and M3000M are materially slower; the M5000M is the top listed option and has 8 GB of graphics memory. See AnandTech’s workstation graphics coverage.

Display options and the colorimeter caveat

Panel Lenovo-listed specification Practical trade-off
17.3-inch FHD IPS 1920×1080, 300 nits, 72% gamut Lower rendering load and simpler scaling
17.3-inch UHD IPS 3840×2160, 300 nits, 90% gamut Sharper workspace but greater GPU/power demand and possible legacy scaling problems
Touch option Listed at 270 nits Heavier and dimmer than the standard panels

The tested UHD panel reached about 350 nits and slightly over 1000:1 contrast, with good out-of-box grayscale and color results. Some UHD units include an X-Rite/Pantone sensor, but AnandTech found that the integrated calibration process worsened grayscale accuracy. External measurement equipment produced a better result. Treat the sensor as a useful extra, not proof of factory-calibrated accuracy; the display findings are documented in AnandTech’s display section.

Expansion is the P70’s strongest modern advantage

Few current laptops offer this combination of accessible storage and memory. The chassis has four memory slots and supports up to 64 GB of DDR4-2133, with ECC or non-ECC operation determined by the processor. Storage can reach four drives: two M.2 slots (SATA or PCIe NVMe support) and two 2.5-inch positions, one of which may be the optical-bay location.

  • The mobile workstation is a visual splendor, whether editing designs or creating content, the OLED touchscreen display is excellent for any project. Equipped with high speed WiFi 7 and a 5MP RGB+IR camera with premium mics.

“Up to four drives” describes the platform, not every second-hand listing. A machine may be missing M.2 screws, brackets, SATA flex cables, a drive tray or an optical-bay caddy. Confirm the machine-type/model number and photograph the interior before buying parts. Verify whether an advertised NVMe drive is actually PCIe rather than an older SATA M.2 device.

Ports and professional connectivity

The P70 includes four USB 3.0 Type-A ports (one Always On), two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, a docking connector, ExpressCard/34 and a UHS-II SD reader. Optional smart-card and 4G LTE modules target corporate and laboratory environments. This breadth is valuable with older instruments, imaging hardware and network equipment, but it contributes to a bulky chassis and feels less convenient than a modern USB-C-only workstation.

Build, keyboard and security

Lenovo specified a spill-resistant six-row keyboard with numeric keypad, optional backlight, TrackPoint and multitouch touchpad. Depending on configuration, the P70 also has a fingerprint reader, smart-card reader, discrete TPM 1.2 plus firmware TPM 2.0, vPro, power-on/hard-drive/supervisor passwords and docking support. Lenovo reported MIL-STD-810G testing and a magnesium/aluminum lower structure with a glass-fiber/PPS display cover. Those are design and test claims—not a guarantee that a used unit has survived undamaged.

Size, weight and battery reality

Lenovo lists starting weights of 7.3 lb (3.3 kg) for non-touch models and 8.1 lb (3.7 kg) for touch models. Non-touch dimensions are approximately 16.38 × 10.85 × 1.18–1.35 inches; touch versions are approximately 16.38 × 10.85 × 1.20–1.37 inches. The 96 Wh battery is paired with a large 170 W or 230 W adapter, so the carrying kit is heavier than the laptop alone. “Transportable workstation” is more accurate than “portable laptop.”

Lenovo ThinkPad L15 (Latest Model) Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U 6-Core 256GB SSD 16GB RAM FHD (1920x1080) IPS Non Touch Windows 11 Professional, Black (Renewed)
  • Lenovo ThinkPad L15 Gen 2 with Ryzen PRO 5650U for Business includes 10-Key Numpad! | Amazon Renewed, Certified Refurbished

Lenovo’s maximum MobileMark 2014 figures were 8.5 hours with discrete graphics and 10.8 hours in hybrid mode. Those are manufacturer maximums from an old benchmark, not a 2026 expectation. A used battery’s cycle count, display resolution, graphics mode, storage, drivers and workload can change runtime dramatically; inspect battery health rather than relying on the original number.

What to check before buying a used P70

  1. Identify the exact configuration: record the machine type, CPU, Quadro model, panel resolution, installed RAM and every drive.
  2. Confirm ECC claims: verify that the processor is Xeon and that the installed modules are appropriate ECC SO-DIMMs; a Core i7 model is not an ECC workstation.
  3. Inspect expansion hardware: check all four RAM sockets, both M.2 positions, 2.5-inch bays, SATA cables, brackets and any optical-bay adapter.
  4. Check battery and power: request a battery report and cycle count, and confirm the supplied adapter is the required 170 W or 230 W unit.
  5. Test every interface: use both Thunderbolt ports, all USB ports, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, Ethernet, SD, ExpressCard and docking contacts where possible.
  6. Examine the panel: look for dead pixels, pressure marks, uneven backlight and working brightness control; test touch only if advertised.
  7. Test input and security hardware: check keyboard, numeric keypad, TrackPoint, touchpad, fingerprint reader and smart-card reader.
  8. Check firmware and thermals: make sure no supervisor password blocks setup, listen for abnormal fan noise and watch for throttling under sustained load.
  9. Verify software support: confirm that the intended operating system, Quadro driver and professional application support the exact configuration; do not assume current certification.
  10. Prefer returns or warranty: hinges, ports, batteries and cooling systems can fail even when the exterior looks clean.

Who should still consider it?

Good fit

  • Buyers seeking a low-cost used workstation with ECC, Quadro driver support, multiple drives or legacy ports.
  • Owners who value repairability and upgrade access over thinness and efficiency.
  • Users whose CAD, engineering or laboratory software still supports this Quadro generation.

Poor fit

  • Commuters and students who need light weight or dependable all-day battery life.
  • Buyers wanting modern CPU efficiency, current graphics performance, HDR or high-refresh displays.
  • Gamers choosing on price-to-frame-rate rather than professional application compatibility.
  • Organizations requiring current warranty, guaranteed parts supply or uncomplicated modern security support.

Bottom line for 2026

The P70 remains interesting because its workstation features were unusually complete: Xeon/ECC, Quadro options, four memory slots, four potential drives, Thunderbolt 3, ExpressCard and a large serviceable chassis. Those advantages can outweigh its age when a clean, correctly configured unit is inexpensive and matched to compatible software.

It is not a sensible general-purpose laptop purchase if portability, battery life, modern graphics, current operating-system support or warranty matter most. Buy the exact configuration—not the P70 name—and price in the risk of an aging battery, cooling system, display and missing expansion hardware.
