Your router is the front door to your home network. Secure its administration account and Wi‑Fi, keep its firmware and connected devices updated, protect online accounts with unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA), remove equipment you no longer use, and back up irreplaceable files. These steps reduce common paths to account theft, privacy loss, ransomware, and unsafe smart-home devices without assuming you need to buy new hardware.

Why home cybersecurity starts with the router

Phones, computers, televisions, cameras, speakers, locks, and other connected products commonly reach the internet through the household router. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this relationship plainly: “The key to privacy in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) world is your router.” See the FTC’s consumer guidance on securing internet-connected devices at home.

A compromised router can expose traffic, redirect devices to malicious sites, or provide an attacker a path to other equipment. Router menus and update procedures differ by manufacturer and internet provider, so use the model’s current manual or support page when a setting is hard to find.

Five practical ways to secure your home network

1. Replace router defaults and turn on Wi‑Fi encryption

Sign in to the router’s administration interface and change the default administrator username or password to a strong, unique credential. Do not use your Wi‑Fi password or a password used anywhere else. Choose a network name (SSID) that does not disclose your family name, address, or apartment number.

ASUS RT-AX1800S Dual Band WiFi 6 Extendable Router, Subscription-Free Network Security, Parental Control, Built-in VPN, AiMesh Compatible, Gaming & Streaming, Smart Home
  • New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
  • Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
  • Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
  • 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
  • Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.

Enable the strongest wireless-encryption option the router supports. Prefer WPA3 when all important devices support it; otherwise use WPA2 with AES rather than an open network or obsolete encryption. Set a separate guest network for visitors and smart devices when your router offers one, and avoid sharing the administrator password.

2. Install router updates and disable unnecessary remote access

In the administration interface, look for Firmware Update, Router Update, Administration, or a similarly named section. Check the manufacturer or ISP support page for the exact process, then install updates from the official source. Turn on automatic router updates if the model provides them and explain when updates are applied.

Disable remote management, remote administration, or web access from the internet unless you have a specific need and understand how to restrict it. Also turn off unused services such as UPnP, file sharing, or old guest networks when the router allows this safely. Record the router model and its last supported-firmware date; a device that no longer receives security fixes deserves replacement consideration.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

3. Use unique account credentials and MFA

Every important account should have a different password or passphrase. A password manager can generate and store long, unique credentials so one stolen password cannot unlock email, banking, shopping, cloud storage, and smart-home accounts.

Enable two-factor or multifactor authentication wherever it is offered, starting with email, banking, the primary cloud account, and the router or smart-home account. Follow each service’s available options; an authenticator app or security key is generally preferable to relying only on text messages when stronger choices are available. Protect recovery codes as carefully as passwords.

4. Update connected devices and remove equipment you no longer use

Install current operating-system, browser, application, and device-firmware updates. Enable automatic updates when the setting is available, while keeping enough storage and battery power for updates to complete. Review the router’s connected-device list and identify every entry.

Disconnect, factory-reset, or recycle devices that are broken, abandoned, or no longer needed. Older products may stop receiving security support. Before buying a smart product, look for a clearly stated software-update support period. In a November 2024 survey of 184 smart products, FTC staff found that nearly 89% did not prominently disclose or readily provide how long companies would provide software updates; that percentage describes the surveyed products, not all smart products sold.

Should you replace your router?

Not automatically. First inspect the equipment you already have: change its administrator credentials, enable modern encryption, apply available firmware updates, and disable unneeded remote management. Replacement becomes reasonable when the router cannot provide secure encryption, no longer receives security updates, cannot be administered safely, or is too old to support the devices and speeds your household requires.

What you find Best next step
Current updates, secure encryption, and working administration controls Keep it; apply updates and review settings regularly.
Updates exist but settings are unclear or remote management is enabled Use the model’s manual or ISP support, then disable unnecessary exposure.
No security updates, obsolete encryption, or an unsupported model Plan for a replacement router with ongoing security support.

When comparing a replacement, verify the particular model’s support duration, update-delivery method, wireless-encryption options, and administration controls. The available guidance supports maintaining a secure router but does not identify one universally best model or show that every household needs new hardware.

A simple maintenance routine

  1. Today: change router and major-account defaults, enable Wi‑Fi encryption and MFA, and disable unnecessary remote management.
  2. Monthly: review router and account alerts, install pending updates, and inspect the connected-device list.
  3. Quarterly: test a backup restore, remove unused devices and accounts, and check whether the router and smart products still receive security support.
