The “new data center rack from IKEA” is the LackRack: a 2010 furniture hack that uses IKEA LACK side tables as an open frame for 19-inch networking hardware. It is not a purpose-built server rack. A separate, newer idea uses an IKEA PS cabinet to conceal home-network equipment—but an enclosed cabinet needs planned airflow, dust control, and temperature monitoring.
What is the IKEA LackRack?
The LackRack is a DIY rack concept built from IKEA LACK side tables. Make described the tables in 2010 as a low-cost, exact-fit option for 19-inch hardware such as Ethernet switches; IKEA Hackers also documented the table used as a rack for a modular datacenter. Make’s LackRack article and IKEA Hackers’ original LACK rack build cover that open-frame approach.
“Exact-fit” refers to the intended fit for compatible 19-inch equipment, not to a universal mounting standard or a guarantee that every device will fit. Check the equipment’s mounting ears, depth, weight, cable clearance, and the table’s stability before building around it. Ordinary furniture is not a rated server rack, so heavy servers or other substantial loads call for particular caution.
How does the LACK rack compare with a PS cabinet?
A LACK setup is open and makes equipment easy to reach, but offers little concealment or protection from dust. An IKEA PS cabinet can hide equipment and look more like ordinary furniture in a home, but enclosing heat-producing devices makes ventilation and maintenance essential.

| Consideration | LACK LackRack | PS cabinet micro data center |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting compatibility | Designed around 19-inch networking hardware; verify each device’s fit. | Cabinet storage rather than a documented 19-inch rack mount; plan how each device will sit and be secured. |
| Enclosure and appearance | Open furniture hack with equipment visible. | Enclosed and visually tidy; the documented build conceals a home network setup. |
| Airflow and dust | Open construction avoids trapping heat in a closed cabinet, though the equipment still needs adequate clearance and airflow. | Needs deliberate intake and exhaust, filtration, and regular cleaning. |
| Load and stability | Furniture construction means you must assess load and stability for the actual gear. | Assess shelf and cabinet capacity and secure equipment; the cited project does not establish a general load rating. |
| Noise and upkeep | Equipment noise is less enclosed; access is straightforward. | Cabinet may reduce visual clutter, but fan noise and temperatures need attention; filters and interior require upkeep. |
| Cost evidence | Described as low-cost, but the cited LackRack articles do not state a build price. | The 2025 IKEA Hackers example cost €35 for its secondhand cabinet; that is the cost of this specific case, not a general build estimate. |
Can an IKEA PS cabinet hide a NAS and network gear?
Yes. IKEA Hackers reported a Paris-based maker’s PS-cabinet micro data center in 2025. The reported setup contained a Freebox modem, an 8-port switch, a 400W UPS, two NAS units, and other equipment. The maker, 6rylou, said, “Living in Paris, where space is tight, I needed one piece of furniture that could hold everything.” The cabinet was secondhand and cost €35 in that specific project; the report says the setup had been running for 15 years. Neither figure should be treated as a universal IKEA build cost or a guaranteed equipment lifespan. IKEA Hackers’ 2025 PS cabinet build has the project details.
The cabinet in that build measures 63 cm high, 119 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, or approximately 0.299 m³. Those are dimensions of the reported cabinet, not a standard size for IKEA PS cabinets generally.

How much cooling does an IKEA cabinet data center need?
There is no single fan size or airflow figure that suits every cabinet: heat output, cabinet layout, room temperature, and device placement all matter. The documented PS-cabinet build uses a 92 × 92 mm fan, with exhaust high and intake low or at the back. 6rylou stressed, “Cooling was absolutely essential.” The guide calculates that the fan could theoretically exchange the cabinet’s air every 30 seconds; that is a theoretical estimate, not a measured cooling result or a guarantee that equipment will stay within safe temperatures. The build guide’s airflow and cooling details describe the setup.
For a similar enclosed build, the guide specifies a fan speed controller, 7.5V power supply, protective grille, dust filters, and anti-vibration pads. A temperature gauge is optional. Actual temperatures should guide fan settings and placement; airflow through the cabinet is not by itself proof that every device is adequately cooled.

How to build an IKEA cabinet home server setup
- Choose the furniture for the equipment. Use a LACK-based open rack if compatible 19-inch devices and easy access are the priority. Choose a cabinet for concealment only if you can provide ventilation and service access.
- Check fit, load, and placement. Measure devices, account for cables and ventilation clearances, and assess the furniture’s stability and capacity for the actual equipment. Do not assume a side table or cabinet has a server-rack load rating.
- Plan airflow before cutting. Decide where cool air enters and warm air exits. The PS-cabinet guide recommends a low or rear intake and a high exhaust.
- Prepare the fan opening and finish. The documented cabinet build lists a jigsaw, drill, masking tape, sandpaper, and adhesive backing for cutouts and finishing. Fit the 92 × 92 mm fan with its grille, filter, controller, and power supply as planned.
- Install equipment and monitor temperatures. Arrange devices to avoid obstructing airflow. Check temperatures daily for the first few weeks and adjust the fan or layout if readings are unsuitable.
- Maintain the enclosure. Clean filters monthly and schedule an interior cleaning every quarter, as the guide recommends. Anti-vibration pads can help address vibration, but they do not eliminate fan or device noise.
Which IKEA approach should you choose?
- Choose a LACK LackRack for a simple, open arrangement of compatible 19-inch networking gear when the furniture can safely support it.
- Choose a PS cabinet when concealing home-network equipment matters and you are prepared to add ventilation, filtration, monitoring, and routine cleaning.
- Choose purpose-built rack equipment instead if your devices are heavy, need secure rack mounting, or exceed what you can confidently support with household furniture.
