That was not the date consumers could buy a cell phone: Motorola says its DynaTAC 8000X received FCC approval in 1983, after roughly a decade of development.
When was the first cell phone invented?
April 3, 1973 is the date commonly recognized as the first public demonstration of a portable handheld cellular telephone. Motorola publicly demonstrated the phone and system, and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) likewise credits Martin Cooper with making the first handheld cell-phone demonstration call that year. Motorola’s history and the ITU’s cellular history overview describe the milestone.
“Invented” can refer to more than one milestone. The 1973 event showed that a handheld cellular-phone concept could work; it was a prototype demonstration, not a consumer product launch. Motorola places FCC approval of its commercial DynaTAC 8000X in 1983, about ten years later.
Who invented the first cell phone?
Martin Cooper, a Motorola leader in the company’s early cellular-phone development, is associated with the 1973 demonstration. The ITU also identifies Cooper as the person who made the first demonstration call with a handheld cell phone. The achievement was the work of a team: the Associated Press reports that Cooper’s team began designing the prototype about five months before the public call.

What did the 1973 prototype look like?
The prototype was a large handheld device by modern standards. The Associated Press reported that it weighed 2.5 pounds and measured 11 inches. These are AP-reported dimensions for the 1973 prototype, rather than specifications from the Motorola history page cited here. In an AP interview, Cooper recalled his concern before the call: “The only thing that I was worried about: ‘Is this thing going to work?’ And it did.”
How did the prototype become a commercial phone?
A successful public demonstration and a product ready for commercial use were different achievements. Motorola describes the work leading to the DynaTAC 8000X as a ten-year effort and says the phone received FCC approval in 1983. The interval reflects the development and regulatory steps between demonstrating a working handheld concept and bringing a commercial portable phone to market. Motorola’s company history provides its timeline for the product milestone.

Why are both 1973 and 1983 called the “first”?
The dates describe separate milestones, not conflicting answers. The 1973 date refers to the public handheld cellular demonstration. The 1983 date refers to FCC approval of Motorola’s DynaTAC 8000X as a commercial portable phone. So, if the question is when the first handheld cell phone was demonstrated, the answer is 1973; if it is when Motorola’s first commercial portable cell phone reached its approval milestone, the answer is 1983.
