Circular connectors are evolving in several directions rather than converging on one universal replacement. The clearest changes are tool-free or faster M12 push-pull locking, hybrid circular interfaces that combine power, signal and data, and pre-assembled M12 cable systems for industrial networks. Whether any “new” M12 option fits your equipment depends on the exact coding, contact arrangement, locking system, electrical limits, data requirements and environmental rating.
What is changing in circular connectors?
Current standards and product ranges point to three practical developments:
- Faster mating: push-pull mechanisms reduce or eliminate the need to rotate a threaded coupling, which is useful in confined spaces and dense panels.
- Function consolidation: hybrid circular connectors carry combinations of power, signals and data through one interface.
- Network integration: manufacturers now supply shielded, pre-assembled circular cable assemblies intended for industrial Ethernet installations.
These are application-specific product directions, not evidence that one connector family will replace every circular format.
M12 is a family, not a single connector
“M12” identifies a circular size and family of interfaces. It does not specify a universal pin count, keying system, locking method or electrical capability.

IEC 61076-2-101:2024 covers M12 screw-locking variants from 2-way through 17-way. Its stated scope includes data transmission frequencies up to 100 MHz and signal or power transmission up to 250 V and 4 A per contact. Those are scope limits for the specified standard, not a rating that can be assigned to every M12 product.
Coding is the basic protection against an incorrect connection. Different codes are intended to prevent mismatched male and female connectors from mating. Before ordering a replacement, record the complete interface description:
- coding (for example, the equipment’s specified keying);
- number and arrangement of contacts;
- male or female side;
- threaded or push-pull coupling;
- panel, PCB or cable termination; and
- the governing IEC detail specification.
Why push-pull M12 designs are gaining attention
Push-pull connectors lock by inserting the plug and engaging an internal or external mechanism, rather than repeatedly turning a coupling nut. That can simplify work where an operator has little room to grip a connector or where many ports must be serviced.
Outer and inner push-pull are different interfaces
IEC 61076-2-010:2021 describes M12-derived outer and inner push-pull designs and defines intermateability with correspondingly coded interfaces. It also states that its inner push-pull design is not compatible with the different inner push-pull interface specified by IEC 61076-2-012. “Push-pull M12” is therefore incomplete compatibility information: the design type and coding must match.

Installation claims need a product qualifier
Phoenix Contact describes an M12 push-pull power range as supporting up to 630 V and 16 A and as suitable for confined installation space. The same product material claims 80% installation-time savings compared with screw connection. That figure is an undated, manufacturer-specific claim; the cited page does not provide a test method or independent study. It should not be treated as a general industry statistic.
TE Connectivity describes tool-free locking, higher PCB socket density and IP67 protection for its push-pull portfolio. Those benefits still depend on the particular connector, cable and installation conditions.
Hybrid circular connectors combine more functions
Hybrid designs address equipment that would otherwise need separate connectors for power, control signals and communications. Phoenix Contact presents M17 PRO as a data, signal and power solution aligned with IEC 61076-2-117. Its examples include up to 16 A and IP66/IP68 protection under stated conditions.
The same manufacturer documents M23 hybrid PCB connectors with a defined pin assignment and product-specific power and data specifications. These examples show a direction toward fewer interfaces and denser equipment layouts; they do not make M17 PRO, M23 hybrid and other hybrid systems interchangeable.

Check the function allocation, not just the shell
A hybrid connector must be evaluated as a complete electrical design. Confirm which contacts are assigned to power, low-level signals and data; the permitted voltage and current for each circuit; shielding and separation requirements; and whether the mating cable and receptacle use the same assignment.
M12 cable assemblies are becoming network products
Circular connectivity is increasingly sold as a complete cable assembly rather than as an isolated plug. Phoenix Contact documents shielded M8/M12 data products for industrial networks and a pre-assembled M12 push-pull X-coded CAT6A cable rated at 10 Gbps, with 360-degree shielding and IP65/IP67 product variants.
Those figures describe that product range. They do not establish a universal 10 Gbps capability for all M12 connectors, nor do they guarantee end-to-end network performance when a different cable, field termination or patching method is used.
Separate four levels of performance
- Connector interface: coding, contact geometry and mating compatibility.
- Cable: conductor construction, impedance, shielding and bend performance.
- Assembly: termination quality, overmolding, strain relief and ingress protection.
- System: switches, transceivers, protocol, distance and installation environment.
A product’s headline data rate is meaningful only when all four levels support it.

What the newer M12 power specification adds
BSI lists BS EN IEC 61076-2-111:2026, published on 28 February 2026 and identical to IEC 61076-2-111:2025. Its scope covers 4- to 6-way M12 power connectors with coding-dependent ratings of 8, 12 or 16 A per contact and voltage ratings of either 50 V AC / 60 V DC or 630 V.
These values belong to the specified coding and design scope. They are not a blanket rating for every M12 power connector. Purchasing teams should verify which edition and national adoption applies in their jurisdiction and then check the manufacturer’s exact part number.
How to choose a future-facing circular connector

A practical compatibility check
- Read the equipment manual or drawing and copy the connector’s full part number or interface designation.
- Identify the coding, contact count, gender and locking style; do not rely on “M12” alone.
- For push-pull parts, determine whether the interface is outer or inner push-pull and which standard specifies it.
- Compare voltage, current, signal frequency and network requirements with the connector and cable-assembly datasheets.
- Confirm mounting dimensions, clearance, temperature range, shielding and ingress protection for the installed position.
- Check the complete mating pair and cable ends. A connector that fits mechanically can still have the wrong pin assignment or electrical class.
- Document the approved part numbers and the applicable standard edition before sourcing substitutes.
What is not yet established
The available standards and manufacturer materials do not establish an independent market-size, adoption or growth forecast for circular connectors. They also do not provide a comparative laboratory test proving that one locking method, hybrid format or cable family is superior in every application.
TE Connectivity quotes product manager Ted Szarkowski: “Device manufacturers and system assemblers can realize a rapid return on investment due to higher worker productivity and increased production uptime, with less risk of intermittent or loose connections,” Says Ted Szarkowski, Product manager industrial Communications. This is a manufacturer statement about expected benefits, not an independent test result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will any M12 push-pull connector mate with a threaded M12 connector?
No. Push-pull and threaded interfaces are different coupling systems. Verify the exact interface design, coding and applicable IEC specification for both sides.
Does an M12 label guarantee 10 Gbps networking?
No. Data rate depends on the coded interface, cable construction, shielding, assembly and the rest of the network. A documented 10 Gbps claim for one X-coded CAT6A assembly is not a universal M12 rating.
Are hybrid M17 and M23 connectors interchangeable?
No. They are separate product families with their own mechanical interfaces, contact assignments and ratings. Select the family specified by the equipment design.
