Unlock by role and missing team function, not by a universal tier list. Start with a Playstyle that matches how you want to contribute, use your early Playstyle Token on a role you can understand immediately, then spend VRs on one broadly useful weapon and one gadget that gives your squad an answer it currently lacks.
Scout is the information and long-range route, Hacker is built around breaching and disabling defenses, and Demolisher focuses on destruction. The best first purchase depends on your body type, your comfort with specialist weapons, and what your teammates are already bringing.
How THE FINALS unlock system works
Embark’s current progression system separates bundled introductions from individual equipment. The game offers 11 pre-built Playstyles. Each Playstyle combines one specialization, one weapon and two gadgets, so selecting one gives you a complete, playable idea rather than a single isolated item.
New players start with three Playstyles unlocked. You receive a Playstyle Token for a fourth choice and earn additional tokens over your first 20 rounds. You also earn VRs with every match. VRs are spent from the Equipment screen on individual specializations, weapons and gadgets.

A custom loadout contains one specialization, one weapon and three gadgets. Four reserve slots let you carry unlocked alternatives and swap between situations without rebuilding your entire setup. That means an early unlock should increase the number of problems you can solve, not permanently commit you to one build.
Matt Lowe, Design Director for THE FINALS, described Playstyles as “simply a set of templates that will better introduce new players to the wealth of varied gameplay in THE FINALS.” Treat them as starting templates, not a permanent class choice.
What to unlock first: the practical order
- Choose a Playstyle first. Spend the token on the role you will recognize and use immediately.
- Identify a missing team function. Look for information, movement, recovery, protection or breach tools before buying a second damage option.
- Buy a flexible weapon for your body type. Learn a broadly applicable rifle or SMG before committing VRs to a sniper, melee weapon, bow or another narrow specialist.
- Use reserves to test alternatives. Keep your first purchase available while you experiment, rather than replacing it before you understand its strengths.
This order is practical guidance, not an official balance ranking. No universal “best weapon” list, win-rate table or developer tier list is published, and balance can change. The goal is reliable coverage while you learn the maps, destruction and objective timing.
Pick your first Playstyle by role

Scout: choose information when your squad loses track of enemies
Scout is the natural first choice for players who want to move quickly, gather information and apply pressure from distance. Information is valuable even when you do not secure the elimination: knowing which route is occupied can prevent a bad push, expose a revive attempt or let your team rotate before a cashout becomes unsafe.
Scout’s long-range identity does not require you to play alone. Share what you learn, keep an exit route, and avoid treating a reveal as permission to overextend. If your aim is still developing, consider pairing the role with a more forgiving secondary option as soon as your body type allows it.

Hacker: choose breach and disruption when defenses stop your team
Hacker suits teams that repeatedly lose time to enemy gadgets, shields or fortified positions. Its value comes from creating an opening: disable the tool protecting an entrance, remove a defensive advantage, then let teammates convert that opening into control of the objective.
Do not buy disruption simply because it sounds powerful. The role is strongest when you can identify the specific gadget or shield preventing progress. If your squad already breaches reliably but cannot locate opponents, an information unlock may produce more immediate improvement.
Demolisher: choose destruction when the map itself is the obstacle
Demolisher is for players who want to change the geometry of a fight. Destruction can expose a cashout, remove cover, create a new angle or stop a team from relying on one fortified room. It is especially useful when a direct doorway push repeatedly fails.
Use destructive equipment with a purpose. Opening a wall without a follow-up route can leave your team exposed, and spending a high-impact charge on minor cover may remove the tool you need for the actual objective.
Which individual gadget should you unlock first?
After your first Playstyle, fill the largest functional gap in your squad. The following choices use the functions documented for the gadgets; they are recommendations for coverage, not a claim that one item is strongest in every patch.

Information first when you cannot make a clean decision
Sonar Grenade is the most generally useful information example because it answers a fundamental question: where are opponents? Use it before entering a contested room, when a cashout goes quiet, or when a revive could be interrupted. It is less valuable if teammates do not act on the reveal, so communicate the direction and timing rather than dropping it without a plan.

Zipline and Jump Pad solve different movement problems. A zipline can establish a repeatable route between levels or across a gap; a jump pad creates a quick launch and can support an aggressive entry or escape. Pick the option that matches the routes your squad actually misses. Mobility is not only for attack: it can move a team away from a collapsing objective before the next fight starts.
Revive and protection first when your team wins fights but loses numbers
Defibrillator is the direct recovery choice, while Dome Shield and Barricade help create the time and cover needed to revive or hold. If teammates are frequently eliminated in exposed positions, a protection tool may produce more revives than an additional damage gadget. If a teammate is already down and the area is safe enough to recover, the instant-revive function is the more direct answer.
Breach first when fortified positions decide every engagement
Glitch Grenade, Thermal Bore, Explosive Mine and RPG-7 address different parts of the breach problem. Glitch Grenade removes enemy gadget and shield advantages; Thermal Bore opens smaller structures; explosive options punish a known position. Choose based on what you can identify consistently. A tool that answers the exact obstacle is more useful than a stronger-sounding option you cannot deploy at the right time.
Which first weapon should you buy with VRs?
Buy a flexible weapon for the body type you intend to play most. A forgiving primary lets you practice movement, recoil, objective timing and destruction without also demanding a highly specialized engagement pattern. Delay a narrow weapon until you know which situations you want it to solve.

The catalogue is body-type specific, so an unlock that looks ideal on paper may not be available to the Contestant you actually use. Check the body type before spending VRs. The examples above are catalogue entries, not a ranking, and their suitability depends on your range, aim, team composition and the current balance.
A simple test for “flexible”
- Can you contribute at the common fighting distance on the maps you play?
- Can you defend yourself while rotating instead of only during a prepared ambush?
- Does the weapon remain useful when an opponent changes elevation or enters cover?
- Will learning it teach transferable skills such as tracking, burst control or angle management?
If the answer is yes to most of these questions, it is a sensible first VR purchase. If the weapon only shines in one range or requires a very specific setup, keep it as a later experiment.

Use the Playstyle Token before spending VRs on a disconnected item unless you already understand exactly which function your current templates lack. A Playstyle supplies a complete specialization, weapon and two gadgets, making it the fastest way to learn a coherent role and compare how different body types contribute.
Individual VR purchases make more sense after you have played enough rounds to notice a repeatable problem. For example, if your team consistently finds opponents but cannot cross open ground, buy mobility or protection. If you can enter rooms but cannot remove shields and defensive gadgets, buy disruption. If you win the first duel but cannot recover a teammate, buy a revive or cover tool.
Tokens and VRs are finite choices in the short term, although the progression system is designed to let you unlock more through play. Avoid spending everything on several versions of the same narrow function.

A first-20-round unlock plan
- Rounds 1–3: learn one complete template. Keep the default Playstyle long enough to understand its specialization, weapon range and gadget timing.
- Rounds 4–6: spend the fourth-choice token. Pick Scout, Hacker or Demolisher according to the role you can perform, not the role that sounds most powerful.
- Rounds 7–10: record the recurring failure. After each match, identify whether information, movement, recovery, protection or breach was missing.
- Rounds 11–14: buy one team-function gadget. Select the tool that addresses that recurring failure and put it in a reserve slot if you do not want to replace your current item immediately.
- Rounds 15–17: buy one flexible weapon. Stay within your preferred body type and choose a weapon usable across several ranges.
- Rounds 18–20: experiment deliberately. Swap one item at a time so you can tell whether the change helped. Save specialist weapons for a clearly defined use case.
This sequence takes advantage of the progressive Playstyle-token unlocks while preventing early VRs from disappearing into a collection of overlapping tools.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Chasing a supposed universal tier list
There is no published universal ranking to settle the question, and a weapon’s value changes with body type, map geometry, mode, team composition and balance updates. Replace tier-list thinking with a function test: what problem does this item solve, and how often do I encounter that problem?
Buying a specialist before learning the fundamentals
A sniper, melee weapon, bow, shield or launcher can be effective in the right hands, but it narrows the situations in which your primary can contribute. Learn a flexible weapon first, then buy a specialist when you can name the range, route or objective pattern it is for.

Duplicating a teammate’s function
Two players bringing similar damage tools may leave the squad without information, movement or recovery. Before spending VRs, ask what no one else can currently do. Coverage usually improves a new team more than another version of an existing strength.
Using utility without a follow-up
A reveal, breach or smoke screen creates an opportunity; it does not automatically win the fight. Call the timing, move while the advantage lasts and keep an exit route. If teammates cannot capitalize on a gadget, reconsider its timing or choose a tool with a more immediate effect.
Ignoring reserves
Four reserve equipment slots exist so you can adapt. Keep a movement, protection or breach option available instead of dismantling your main loadout every time the opponent changes approach.
Quick decision guide
- Do you want to see and outrange opponents? Start with Scout, then consider Sonar Grenade or a flexible Light weapon.
- Are shields and enemy gadgets stopping every entry? Start with Hacker, then consider Glitch Grenade or another breach answer.
- Is the building itself keeping you out? Start with Demolisher, then consider Thermal Bore, Explosive Mine or RPG-7 where available.
- Does your squad die while rotating? Prioritize Zipline, Jump Pad, Dome Shield or Barricade.
- Do you win fights but fail to recover teammates? Prioritize Defibrillator and protect the revive with cover.
- Are you unsure what you need? Keep the Playstyle template, play several rounds, and spend VRs only after you can describe the repeated failure.
Bottom line
The strongest first unlock is the one that gives your squad a missing answer while remaining easy enough for you to use consistently. Take a Playstyle token for a role you understand, buy one flexible weapon for your body type, then add information, mobility, recovery, protection or breach utility according to what your team lacks. Treat every later unlock as an experiment that expands your options, not as proof that one item is permanently best.
