It is a deterrent, not a lock or other physical barrier, and the project report does not establish how reliably it works or whether it prevents theft.
How the Arduino pickpocket trap works
Maker Aquaman, one half of the Engineering Dads YouTube duo, designed the device to sit in a pocket with a light-dependent resistor (LDR). When someone lifts the device without knowing about the sensor, the change in light is intended to trigger the controller. The controller then starts audio playback through an amplifier and speaker, producing a recorded scream.
The idea was inspired by the viral “attenzione pickpocket” videos from Venice, Italy, in which a woman shouts warnings about pickpockets. Aquaman described wanting to bring the voice home with him—“or at least her voice”—and build it into a project.
What the device is made of
- Arduino-compatible microcontroller: responds to the sensor and starts playback.
- LDR (photoresistor): detects the light change associated with lifting the device.
- Speaker and amplifier: play the digitized scream.
- Rechargeable lithium-ion battery circuit: powers the portable build.
- 3D-printed enclosure: houses the components in a form intended for a pocket.
Those are the components and design elements documented in Gareth Halfacree’s Hackster.io report. A practical recreation would also need suitable wiring and a way to store and play the audio; the report points readers to the project video for further build details rather than establishing a complete parts specification here.

What it can—and cannot—do
The trap’s output is an audible warning intended to startle or draw attention. It does not secure a wallet, physically obstruct a thief, or notify the owner through a phone. Its trigger depends on a light change, so the design is conceptually different from alarms based on motion or wireless tracking.
The Hackster.io report provides no measured sound level, false-trigger rate, battery runtime, independent reliability test, or demonstrated theft-prevention result. The project should therefore be understood as a maker-built deterrent concept, not a proven anti-theft product. Lighting conditions and how the device is positioned could matter to an LDR-based trigger, but the report does not quantify those effects.

Build files and project access
Hackster.io says additional build details are in the video and that 3D-print files are available to people backing the Engineering Dads channel on Patreon. Access and any support terms may change; check the creators’ current channel information before relying on file availability. The report was displayed as three years old when retrieved on September 30, 2026, so component availability and creator-support terms should also be verified.
