The Big Data Game Board™ is a facilitated discussion framework for organizations weighing how to use data, analytics, and AI—not a verified retail board-game product. Its purpose is to help teams examine common traps, compare opportunities by business value and implementation feasibility, and discuss which data, algorithms, markets, assets, and partners matter to an innovation effort.
What The Big Data Game Board™ is
A 2019 reproduction attributes the board to Bill Schmarzo, identified there as CTO of Hitachi Vantara, and describes it as a way to help people avoid recurring traps in the data and analytics journey. The title is also associated with a November 19, 2018 KDnuggets article, identified as “The Big Data Game Board™” in secondary coverage. The available sources establish the article’s existence and themes, but do not establish that the original page is currently accessible.
The board is best understood as a decision and discussion aid for data-driven innovation. It is not evidence of a particular software product or consumer board-game release. A related TNO report describes a serious game intended to introduce concepts relevant to Big Data ecosystems; that source does not establish that its game and Schmarzo’s board are identical.
Who it is for and what teams explore
The format is aimed at organizations considering data-driven innovation, including teams that need to align on opportunities, resources, and collaboration. The documented game prompts players to consider questions such as:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Can one organization deliver a data-driven innovation, or will it need collaborators—and which ones?
- What is most important in a particular opportunity: access to data, an algorithm, or a route to market?
- Which assets should the organization develop, and in what sequence?
- How can it create value from an important asset, such as a unique dataset?
These questions resist the idea that simply collecting data or building a model is enough. They direct attention to the wider combination of assets, capabilities, partners, and customers required to turn an opportunity into value.
How the documented game works
An Industry 4.0 training report describes a facilitated session that requires a trainer, the board game, a room, and players. The documented format takes about 3–4 hours. The report says it had been practiced by several Dutch companies in Chamber of Commerce sessions and was developed professionally and scientifically by TNO. Those details describe the format in that report; they do not establish the current availability of a workshop.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Players use the experience to explore data-driven innovation rather than to compete over a consumer-game score. The trainer and group can use the session to surface assumptions, discuss trade-offs, and identify what an organization needs to investigate or build.

- Getting stuck in the analytics chasm. A team may struggle to move from analysis or proof of concept toward implementation and useful outcomes.
- Accepting data without assessing its value. More data is not automatically better; teams need to connect data access and quality to a valuable use.
- Falling into a data swamp. Accumulating data without a plan for collaboration and value creation can leave an organization with a costly, poorly used resource rather than a productive platform.
- Chasing technology for its own sake. New tools do not substitute for a clearly defined business need or a workable path to implementation.
- Following hype instead of engineering practical value. Inflated expectations around AI or analytics can distract from a realistic, testable case for value.
Together, these warnings shift the conversation from “What technology should we adopt?” toward “Which opportunity matters, what must be true to deliver it, and how will it create value?”
How to prioritize analytics use cases
A central decision aid is a priority matrix that considers business value alongside implementation feasibility. This prevents teams from ranking ideas on promised impact alone: a high-value concept may be difficult to execute, while a feasible project may have little strategic value.

- List candidate use cases. Describe each opportunity in terms of the business outcome it is intended to improve.
- Assess expected business value. Make the assumptions behind each estimate visible rather than treating potential as a guaranteed result.
- Assess implementation feasibility. Consider whether the organization can access the necessary data, develop or obtain the required capabilities, and deliver the use case in practice.
- Discuss potential and risk together. Use the matrix to identify promising candidates and record the uncertainties or dependencies that could change their ranking.
- Agree on what to investigate or build next. Use the discussion to set priorities, not to treat a promising position on the matrix as proof that a project will succeed.
The matrix is a way to structure judgment, not a substitute for evidence. Its value comes from making the reasoning and trade-offs explicit across the people who would have to deliver the work.

There is evidence for a facilitated serious-game format and a reproduced Schmarzo-attributed board, but the available sources do not verify a current retail product, download, license, or purchase route for the exact title. Treat it as an organizational workshop framework unless a provider can confirm the specific materials and terms currently available.

Another data-related board game should not be confused with this one. A 2020 study describes Geopoly, a separate Monopoly-derived board and digital game using Wikipedia data to teach ranking, grouping, and spatial relationships. It is an adjacent example of game-based learning, not The Big Data Game Board™.
