For most people buying an Xbox mainly for new indie games, the Xbox Series S 1TB is the sensible choice. It runs the same Xbox Series X|S generation of games and services, costs less than Series X models, and suits a 1080p or 1440p display. Choose the Xbox Series X 1TB with a disc drive instead if you want native 4K, physical games, backward-compatible discs, UHD Blu-ray playback, or the most performance headroom. The Series S 512GB is only attractive when its lower upfront price matters more than storage. A Series X Digital is a specialist option for buyers who want Series X hardware but will never use discs.

Which Xbox should you buy for new indie games?
Buy the Xbox Series S 1TB if your indie games will be digital downloads, your display is 1080p or 1440p, and you want the smallest, least expensive 1TB route into the current generation. Buy the Xbox Series X 1TB with a disc drive if you own physical games, want native 4K, use backward-compatible discs, watch UHD Blu-ray, or prefer the highest-performance console. The choice is about storage, media and display priorities—not access to a separate indie catalog: Series S and Series X belong to the same Xbox Series X|S platform.
There is no guarantee that every future indie game will launch on both consoles, or that a game will use the same resolution and frame-rate target on each. Before pre-ordering, open the individual Xbox store page and confirm Xbox Series X|S support and any developer-published performance details.

What do Series S and Series X have in common?
Both consoles provide the core Series X|S platform features that matter for indie players:
- Quick Resume for switching among supported games.
- Smart Delivery, where a participating title supplies the appropriate console version.
- DirectX ray tracing and variable refresh rate support.
- Up to 120 frames per second when the game and display support it.
- Cloud saves and digital pre-installation.
- Access to Game Pass and compatibility with thousands of games across four Xbox generations.
Microsoft describes both systems as delivering next-generation capabilities through Xbox Velocity Architecture. That shared software and service base is why a Series S is a legitimate new-game console rather than a separate “indie” platform. Differences appear in graphics targets, storage, physical media and hardware margin.
What is the difference between Xbox Series S and Series X?
Resolution and performance headroom
Microsoft positions Series S for 1440p gaming, with the ability to upscale to 4K. Series X is designed for native 4K. A 4K television can display a Series S output, but upscaling is not the same as rendering the game natively at 4K. Series X also occupies the higher-end hardware position, giving it more headroom for demanding scenes and higher-resolution modes.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not turn those targets into a promise about every indie title. Resolution, frame rate and graphics modes are set by each game’s developer. An especially simple 2D game may look similar on both systems, while a visually ambitious 3D release may expose the difference. Check the store listing or the developer’s specifications for the exact title.
Disc drive and ownership
Every Series S configuration is all-digital. It cannot read game discs, DVD movies or UHD Blu-ray discs. Digital purchases, digital codes and subscription downloads are therefore the practical ways to build its library.

Series X configurations are available with an optical drive or without one. The 1TB Disc Drive model can play physical Xbox games that are supported by backward compatibility and UHD Blu-ray movies. The Series X All-Digital model keeps Series X performance but gives up those disc capabilities, so it is unsuitable for anyone with a physical collection.
Storage capacity
Xbox lists Series S in 512GB and 1TB configurations. Series X comes in 1TB and 2TB configurations depending on the model. These are nominal capacities; system software occupies part of the internal drive, so the space available for games is lower.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNew indie games are generally digital-first, which makes capacity important. A 1TB Series S leaves more room for a rotating library than the 512GB model and delays the need for an expansion card. The 512GB console can still be a good value when you regularly uninstall finished games, but its lower capacity is a recurring management task rather than a one-time difference.
Size and weight
| Console | Dimensions | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 15.1cm × 15.1cm × 30.1cm | 9.8lb |
| Xbox Series S | 6.5cm × 15.1cm × 27.5cm | 4.25lb |
Series S is substantially lighter and slimmer, useful for a small media cabinet or moving the console between rooms. Series X needs more vertical clearance and weighs more, but its larger hardware is part of the premium performance design.
Is Xbox Series S 1TB enough for new indie games?
For a digital-first player, the 1TB Series S is usually enough to start without immediately buying extra storage. It is the best balance in the range when your screen is 1080p or 1440p and you do not need discs. The 1TB capacity also reduces the chance that a large download will force you to delete another game immediately.

Storage needs still depend on how many games you keep installed, not whether a game is labelled indie. Keep finished games in your account and reinstall them when needed, or add a supported expansion card when you want a permanently installed library. Microsoft says expansion cards use the console’s dedicated port and replicate the custom SSD experience at the same performance; its product information recommends a 1TB card option.
When is the Series S 512GB worth buying?
Choose the 512GB Series S only when the lower upfront price is decisive and you accept tighter storage management or a later expansion purchase. It provides the same Series X|S platform features and the same 1440p-with-upscaling design goal as the 1TB Series S, but its nominal capacity is half as large.
- Good fit: one or two active games at a time, reliable broadband for reinstalling, and a strict budget.
- Risk: a growing digital library, large updates, or several household users can fill the drive quickly.
- Plan: budget for expansion based on your library habits rather than assuming all 512GB is usable for games.
When should you buy the Xbox Series X 1TB with a disc drive?
The disc-drive Series X is the complete choice for buyers who want flexibility. It combines the native-4K target with physical media, backward-compatible discs and UHD Blu-ray playback. It is also the safest pick if you might buy used games, borrow discs, or already own Xbox discs.
Its higher price is harder to justify solely on the existence of indie games: the Series S and Series X share the generation’s services and game compatibility. The justification is the package of display quality, optical media and performance headroom. If those benefits do not matter to you, the Series S 1TB usually leaves more money for games and storage.
Who should consider the Series X All-Digital?
The Series X All-Digital model is for someone who wants the Series X hardware tier and native-4K target but is permanently committed to downloads and subscriptions. It removes the disc drive, so it cannot serve a physical collection or UHD Blu-ray needs. Its reported US price was $749.99 in the August 1, 2026 snapshot, only a dated reference; compare the current regional price against the disc-drive model before deciding.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For an indie-focused buyer with a 1080p or 1440p display, the extra cost over Series S is difficult to explain unless you specifically value the Series X performance tier or plan to upgrade the display.
How should you choose between digital and physical games?
Use this decision sequence before paying:
- List your media: if you own or expect to buy physical Xbox games or UHD Blu-rays, select a Series X with an optical drive.
- Check your screen: 1080p and 1440p screens align naturally with Series S; native-4K ambitions point to Series X.
- Estimate your installed library: choose 1TB over 512GB when you keep many downloads installed.
- Check the exact game: verify Xbox Series X|S support and the developer’s resolution or frame-rate targets on the store page.
- Price the whole setup: include a supported expansion card if your library will exceed internal capacity, and recheck retailer pricing in your country.
What storage expansion does Xbox support?
Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Cards plug into the dedicated expansion port. Microsoft says they are designed to match the internal custom SSD experience at the same performance, rather than acting like a slower general-purpose USB drive. Microsoft product information recommends a 1TB card option.
Expansion is most useful for the 512GB Series S or for households that keep many large games installed. It is not a reason to buy Series X by itself: both console families can use the supported expansion approach. Decide after estimating how often you want to reinstall games and how many players share the console.
What should you verify before buying an indie game?
Open the game’s Xbox store listing and look for the Xbox Series X|S designation. Then read any listed resolution, frame-rate or Smart Delivery notes. A title may support both consoles while offering different graphics modes, and an announced future game may change platforms or launch plans. Treat the store page and the developer’s current specification as the authority for that particular release.

The ranking uses the documented differences that affect an indie-first purchase: digital-only versus physical ownership, 1440p upscaling versus native 4K targets, 512GB versus 1TB or 2TB storage, the Series X performance tier, console size, and the dated US price snapshot. It does not assume that Series X has a larger indie catalog; both are members of the Xbox Series X|S platform.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Game Pass include every new indie game on launch day?
No. Game Pass access is available on both consoles, but inclusion and launch timing vary by title and region. Check the individual game’s Xbox listing and the current Game Pass catalog rather than treating the subscription as a guarantee.
Can a 120Hz television make every indie game run at 120 FPS?
No. The consoles support up to 120 FPS, but the game must offer a suitable mode and the display must support the required refresh rate. Many titles target lower frame rates or prioritize resolution.
How can I tell whether a specific upcoming indie game supports Series S?
Look for the Xbox Series X|S label on the game’s official Xbox store page and read the developer’s published platform notes. Do not infer support from an Xbox One announcement alone.
