The best WhatsApp alternative of 2022 was Signal for privacy-conscious users: it offered end-to-end encryption by default, open-source technology, cross-platform apps, and no ads or trackers according to Signal. Telegram was better for large communities, while iMessage and Google Messages made more sense inside Apple or Android ecosystems.

No messenger was universally best. The right replacement depended on whether privacy defaults, group size, public communities, operating-system compatibility, SMS continuity, or workplace administration mattered most. This comparison focuses on the services and trade-offs that existed during 2022, rather than silently importing later features.

Key takeaways

  • Signal was the clearest mainstream choice for private-by-default messaging in 2022 because Signal described messages and calls as end-to-end encrypted by default and operated the service as a nonprofit without ads or trackers.
  • Telegram was the stronger choice for large groups, channels, usernames, bots, cloud synchronization, and power-user features, but ordinary Telegram cloud chats were not end-to-end encrypted by default.
  • iMessage worked best for households using only Apple devices, while Google Messages with RCS was the most natural Android-native option when the carrier, device, and country supported the required features.
  • Discord was designed for structured communities, gaming, moderation, and persistent voice rooms rather than private family messaging.
  • No competing service could automatically transfer a complete WhatsApp social graph, live group history, memberships, and account identity; switching required coordination with contacts.

Which WhatsApp alternative was best in 2022?

Signal was the best overall WhatsApp alternative in 2022 for privacy-conscious users. Signal combined phone-based registration, private messaging, group chats, voice and video calls, media sharing, broad device support, and end-to-end encryption by default. Signal’s own description also highlighted the open-source Signal Protocol, nonprofit operation, and absence of ads and trackers; see Signal’s official product information.

Signal was not automatically the best choice for every reader. Telegram was more useful for large communities and broadcast channels. iMessage was more convenient when every important contact used Apple hardware. Google Messages preserved SMS continuity on supported Android setups. Discord and Wire solved community and workplace problems that WhatsApp was never designed to handle in exactly the same way.

App Best for Private by default? Platforms and identity Biggest drawback
Signal Private everyday messaging Yes for messages and calls, according to Signal Android, iPhone/iPad, Windows, macOS, Linux; phone-number registration Contacts must adopt another app
Telegram Large groups, channels, and cloud access No for ordinary cloud chats; Secret Chats are the relevant end-to-end encrypted mode iOS, Android, desktop clients, and web; phone-number registration with username discovery Privacy mode is not the default for ordinary chats
iMessage All-Apple households Requires careful separation of message encryption from account and backup considerations Apple devices; Apple ID and/or phone number Not a practical universal option for Android users
Google Messages/RCS Android messaging with SMS fallback Depends on the specific RCS implementation, date, device, carrier, and conversation Android messaging app; availability varies by market Features and encryption can change when RCS is unavailable
Discord Communities, gaming, channels, and voice rooms Not a private-by-default WhatsApp-style messenger Account-based service with desktop, mobile, and web access Its community model is a poor fit for ordinary family chat
Wire Managed workplace collaboration Security and administration must be evaluated against business requirements Team-oriented accounts and collaboration tools Paid/business orientation
Viber Markets where Viber is already popular Check the exact feature and conversation context Mobile and desktop messaging and calling Weak network effect in some countries

The encryption column needs qualification. “Encrypted” does not automatically mean end-to-end encrypted, enabled by default, metadata-free, anonymous, protected in every backup, or resistant to screenshots and forwarding.

Why were people looking for WhatsApp alternatives in 2022?

Interest rose because of concern about Meta/Facebook ownership, data sharing, and confusion surrounding WhatsApp’s 2021 privacy-policy controversy. The concern was not accurately summarized as “WhatsApp messages were unsecured.” WhatsApp used end-to-end encryption, but a privacy comparison also had to consider metadata, contact uploading, device and account information, cloud backups, business interactions, ownership, and connections to wider advertising ecosystems.

Contemporary reporting from WIRED and a 2022 comparison from Beebom illustrate why users were comparing more than a simple encryption checkbox. Message content, information about a communication, and data supplied through business or account features are different privacy questions.

The practical limitation was the social graph. Changing applications did not automatically move family members, work contacts, school groups, clubs, local businesses, or service providers. A messenger was useful only when the people a reader needed to contact would actually use it.

What makes a good WhatsApp alternative?

A useful replacement needed to be judged against the reader’s actual communication pattern, not by adding up superficial features. These were the most important criteria:

  • Privacy defaults: whether end-to-end encryption was automatic or had to be deliberately enabled.
  • Protocol transparency: whether the encryption design and relevant software were open to inspection.
  • Metadata and account model: what information was retained and whether registration required a phone number, email address, Apple ID, or username.
  • Platform coverage: support for iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and web access, with the warning that features might differ between clients.
  • Group capability: ordinary family groups, large communities, channels, roles, moderation, and administration were separate needs.
  • Calls and media: one-to-one and group voice/video calls, files, photos, videos, voice messages, and document sharing.
  • Migration friction: invite links and contact discovery helped, but no mainstream option provided a universal one-click WhatsApp migration.
  • Adoption: the most technically attractive app failed as a replacement if important contacts refused to join.
  • Ownership and incentives: nonprofit, private company, platform owner, advertising ecosystem, and paid business service models carried different trade-offs.

Why was Signal the best overall WhatsApp replacement?

Signal was the best overall WhatsApp alternative of 2022 when the main requirement was private-by-default everyday communication. Signal stated that every message and call was end-to-end encrypted, and Signal supported text, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, files, voice calls, video calls, groups, and stickers. Its official downloads covered Android, iPhone and iPad, Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Signal’s advantage was broader than encryption alone. Signal described the Signal Protocol as open source and said the service had no ads or trackers and was operated by a nonprofit foundation. Those choices gave Signal a clearer privacy-first position than services whose ordinary chats, advertising relationships, or platform integrations required more qualification. Read Signal’s own explanation of its technology and operating model for the claims that were available during this comparison.

What did Signal do better than WhatsApp?

  • Messages and calls were private by default rather than requiring users to find a special conversation mode.
  • Signal covered mixed iPhone and Android households without locking the conversation to one device ecosystem.
  • Signal offered the everyday features most WhatsApp users expected, including groups, media, files, stickers, and calls.
  • Signal’s nonprofit and no-ads-or-trackers positioning addressed some of the ownership and advertising concerns driving migration interest.

What were Signal’s weaknesses?

Signal’s main weakness was adoption. Signal had a smaller network than WhatsApp and Telegram, so a user might need to maintain WhatsApp while persuading contacts to move. Signal also offered fewer public-broadcast, discovery, and community-management features than Telegram or Discord. Signal emphasized private communication, not a cloud archive and public social platform.

Choose Signal if the highest-value conversations are personal, family, or small-group conversations and private-by-default messaging matters more than public discovery or very large communities.

Was Telegram more private than WhatsApp?

Telegram was a strong WhatsApp alternative for features and communities, but Signal was the clearer recommendation when private-by-default messaging was the main requirement. Telegram’s ordinary chats used Telegram’s cloud architecture and were not end-to-end encrypted by default; Telegram’s Secret Chats were the relevant end-to-end encrypted mode. Telegram’s official FAQ distinguishes cloud chats from Secret Chats.

Telegram’s cloud approach made messages available across multiple devices and supported a powerful feature set: large groups, channels, usernames, bots, file sharing, voice calls, video calls, and group calls. Telegram also documented groups supporting up to 200,000 members and channels broadcasting to unlimited audiences in its FAQ. Those are different functions: a large group is an interactive community, while a channel is primarily a broadcast mechanism.

Telegram feature Why it appealed to WhatsApp users Privacy qualification
Cloud synchronization Messages could be accessed across multiple devices Ordinary cloud chats were not end-to-end encrypted by default
Large groups Suitable for very large communities Scale increases moderation and exposure challenges
Channels Useful for one-to-many broadcasting Public distribution is not equivalent to private messaging
Usernames Allowed contact discovery without sharing a phone number in every interaction Account registration still used a phone number; username discovery did not make the account anonymous
Secret Chats Provided Telegram’s end-to-end encrypted private-chat mode Secret Chats were device-specific and were not the default for ordinary conversations

Telegram was therefore the better choice for scale, channels, bots, cloud access, and feature-heavy communities. Telegram was not the best choice for a user who wanted every ordinary conversation to be end-to-end encrypted without changing a setting. Contemporary comparison coverage from Tom’s Guide also reflects this important distinction.

Which WhatsApp alternative was best for iPhone users?

iMessage was the lowest-friction choice for an all-Apple household. iMessage integrated naturally with iPhone, iPad, and Mac, so a household already using Apple devices did not need to persuade everyone to install a separate messenger. Apple’s Messages documentation is the appropriate starting point for device and account behavior.

iMessage was not a universal WhatsApp replacement. Mixed iPhone and Android groups could not rely on the same iMessage experience, and messages involving Android participants behaved differently from Apple-to-Apple conversations. Readers also needed to separate the protection of message content from Apple account security, device security, synchronization, and cloud-backup considerations. “iMessage is completely private” was too broad a claim.

Choose iMessage when every important contact uses Apple devices. Choose Signal when the group includes Android users or when a platform-neutral privacy recommendation matters. Choose Telegram when seamless access across phones, tablets, and computers and large community features matter more than private-by-default chats.

Which WhatsApp alternative was best for Android users?

Google Messages with RCS was the most natural Android-native strategy when SMS continuity mattered and the relevant carrier, device, country, and messaging implementation supported RCS. Google Messages could preserve a familiar Android messaging workflow and provide SMS fallback, but RCS behavior was not identical everywhere. The Google Messages product entry point does not remove the need to check local support.

  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

Before choosing Google Messages as a WhatsApp replacement, an Android user should verify:

  • Whether RCS was enabled by Google, the carrier, or the device manufacturer.
  • Whether the intended contacts also used compatible RCS messaging.
  • Whether group chats, read receipts, typing indicators, and media features worked in that market and client.
  • What happened when a participant lacked RCS and the conversation fell back to ordinary SMS or MMS.
  • Whether the exact RCS implementation and date supported end-to-end encryption. A blanket statement that Google Messages was end-to-end encrypted would have been misleading.

Choose Google Messages/RCS when SMS fallback and Android integration were more important than having one consistent, privacy-focused service across every platform. Choose Signal for private mixed-device conversations.

Which app was best for large groups and communities?

Telegram was the best WhatsApp alternative for large groups and broadcasting, while Discord was the better choice for structured communities. Telegram combined large groups, channels, usernames, bots, cloud synchronization, and file sharing. Discord organized communities around channels, roles, moderation tools, and voice rooms rather than around a phone contact list.

Need Best fit Why Why it is not a universal WhatsApp replacement
Large interactive group Telegram Designed for very large groups and cloud-based access Ordinary chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default
Broadcast updates Telegram channels One-to-many publishing and public discovery Broadcasting is different from private group conversation
Gaming or interest community Discord Channels, roles, moderation, and voice rooms Community-first design is less suitable for a family address book
Small private family group Signal or Viber Better fit for direct messaging and calls Adoption depends on region and personal contacts
Managed workplace team Wire Team administration, encrypted collaboration, file sharing, and calls Business orientation can be excessive for casual chat

Discord’s official service was especially appropriate for gaming and organized communities, but Discord should not be described as a private-by-default WhatsApp-style messenger or as end-to-end encrypted by default.

Was Wire a good WhatsApp replacement for work?

Wire was better suited to privacy-oriented teams than ordinary family migration. Wire addressed encrypted messaging, voice and video calls, file sharing, and business administration. Those features mattered when an organization needed managed accounts, employee offboarding, central administration, or a defined collaboration environment.

Wire’s business model also required care. A March 2022 TechRepublic comparison reported a historical Wire Enterprise price signal beginning at $7.65 per account per month. That figure was secondary reporting from March 2022, not a current price, and should not be used as a present-day quotation without checking an archived official plan page.

Consumer encryption did not automatically satisfy business or regulatory requirements. Organizations handling sensitive work needed to examine retention, legal discovery, device management, data residency, identity verification, audit, compliance, and employee access. Wire, Microsoft Teams, or an organization-managed Matrix deployment could be more appropriate than a consumer messenger, depending on those requirements.

Was Viber worth considering?

Viber was a credible regional alternative when the intended contacts already used Viber. Viber offered messaging, voice calls, and video calls, and its usefulness depended heavily on local adoption. The official Viber site provides the product starting point.

Viber should not automatically rank highly for a United States-focused audience or any market where few contacts use it. Messaging services are governed by network effects: a feature-rich service with no reachable contacts is less useful than a simpler service the family, school, club, or workplace already accepts.

What privacy-focused specialist alternatives existed?

Specialist services could be appropriate for readers willing to accept more setup friction or a smaller network. They were secondary recommendations rather than universal replacements.

Service Best suited to Main trade-off
Element/Matrix Federated communities, organizations, and readers wanting server choice More complex onboarding, hosting, and server-selection decisions
Threema Readers willing to pay for a privacy-oriented messenger Paid access in some markets and weaker adoption in many regions
Session Readers prioritizing reduced phone-number dependence Lower mainstream adoption and more onboarding friction
Jami and similar peer-to-peer tools Technically advanced users seeking unusual architectures Less practical for ordinary family, work, and service-provider communication

Regional services such as LINE or KakaoTalk could also be sensible where local adoption was strong, but regional relevance should be established before recommending them to a global audience.

Can WhatsApp chats be moved to another app?

There was no universal one-click migration of WhatsApp conversations, groups, members, and identity into a competing service. Export tools could preserve old conversations as archives, but exported files were generally not live, searchable conversations inside the replacement app.

A realistic migration usually required the following steps:

  1. Select the service by use case. Pick Signal for private-by-default messaging, Telegram for scale, iMessage for an all-Apple group, Google Messages for Android SMS/RCS continuity, Discord for communities, or Wire for managed work collaboration.
  2. Confirm adoption before deleting anything. Ask the people in the highest-value conversations which service they will actually use.
  3. Install and register. Create the new account and review its privacy, PIN, registration-lock, screen-lock, or two-factor options.
  4. Invite contacts individually. Use the new service’s contact discovery or invite link rather than assuming WhatsApp contacts will appear automatically.
  5. Recreate groups. Assign administrators, restore permissions, pin important information, and provide a verified invite link.
  6. Export or archive old WhatsApp chats. Keep old records separately if they matter; do not assume messages, media, timestamps, starred messages, polls, or search history will transfer cleanly.
  7. Announce a transition date. Tell contacts where new conversations will happen and keep WhatsApp available during the overlap period.
  8. Reassess before leaving. Delete or deactivate WhatsApp only after confirming that essential family, work, school, and service-provider conversations have moved.

Group migration was a coordination project, not merely an app download. Creating a replacement group did not automatically preserve the old group’s messages, media history, polls, pinned messages, permissions, or administrator structure.

Do these alternatives work without a phone number?

No, not all WhatsApp alternatives worked without a phone number in 2022. Signal generally required phone-number registration. Telegram used a phone number for account registration but supported usernames for contact discovery; Telegram’s official FAQ documents both behaviors. iMessage depended on an Apple ID and/or phone number. Discord primarily used account credentials rather than WhatsApp-style phone identity. Wire supported account-based team use, while specialist services such as Session emphasized a different identity model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A username could reduce the need to display a phone number to every contact, but a username did not automatically make an account anonymous. Phone-number services also created recovery risks involving SIM loss, number recycling, SMS interception, device theft, or lost registration credentials.

How should a user secure a new messenger account?

App-level privacy could not compensate for a compromised phone or an unlocked desktop. After installing an alternative, users should:

  • Enable the app’s available registration lock, PIN, password, or two-factor authentication.
  • Use a strong device screen lock and keep the operating system updated.
  • Review linked desktop and web sessions and remove devices that are no longer trusted.
  • Protect the phone number or account credentials used for recovery.
  • Understand whether backups are encrypted, where they are stored, and who controls the recovery account.
  • Remember that encryption did not stop screenshots, forwarding, exposed notifications, compromised endpoints, or an unlocked recipient device.

Which WhatsApp alternative should you choose?

If your priority is… Choose in 2022 Accept this drawback
Private-by-default messaging Signal You must persuade contacts to switch
Large groups, channels, and bots Telegram Ordinary chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default
An all-Apple household iMessage It is not a practical mixed-platform replacement
Android messaging with SMS fallback Google Messages/RCS Support and features vary by country, carrier, device, and client
Gaming or structured communities Discord It is not a private family messenger
Managed workplace collaboration Wire Business plans and administration may be unnecessary for personal use
Strong regional adoption Viber It may be unpopular among contacts in other markets
Federation or maximum organizational control Matrix/Element Setup and administration are more complex
Reduced phone-number dependence Session or another specialist service Adoption and usability are weaker than mainstream choices

The final recommendation was therefore conditional: choose Signal if privacy was the priority, Telegram if scale and features mattered most, iMessage if everyone used Apple devices, Google Messages if SMS/RCS continuity mattered, Discord for communities, Wire for managed business collaboration, and Viber where local adoption made it practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Signal a complete WhatsApp replacement?

Signal was the closest mainstream replacement for private everyday messaging in 2022, with phone-based onboarding, groups, media sharing, and voice and video calls. Signal could not automatically move WhatsApp contacts or chat histories, so successful replacement depended on contact adoption and manual group recreation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Telegram safer than Signal?

Telegram was not the clearer choice for private-by-default messaging because ordinary Telegram cloud chats were not end-to-end encrypted by default. Telegram was stronger for large groups, channels, usernames, bots, and cloud synchronization, while Signal was the more straightforward privacy recommendation.

Can iPhone and Android users message each other with iMessage?

iMessage was not a practical universal replacement for mixed iPhone and Android groups in 2022. Signal or Telegram was more suitable when important contacts used both operating systems.

What is the easiest way to migrate a family from WhatsApp?

Choose one replacement, move the highest-value family conversations first, recreate the groups, announce a transition date, and keep WhatsApp installed during the overlap. WhatsApp chat exports generally served as archives rather than importable live conversations.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Signal was the best WhatsApp alternative of 2022 for most privacy-conscious users, but Telegram was better for large communities, iMessage for Apple-only households, Google Messages for Android SMS/RCS continuity, Discord for structured communities, Wire for managed teams, and Viber where regional adoption was strong. The decisive question was not which app had the longest feature list; it was which service combined the right privacy model with the contacts and devices that mattered.
