If you are returning to World of Warcraft before Midnight, do not try to replay every expansion. The most useful catch-up is a three-pass route: watch Blizzard’s current Story So Far recap, play the concluding chapters of The War Within on the hero you intend to use, then follow the bridge quests from the in-game Adventure Guide. Add Lorewalking for older history and the Returning Player Experience if your controls or systems are rusty.

This order gives you the broad plot quickly, preserves the character-specific revelations that videos omit, and puts you into the current campaign without forcing a complete tour of Warcraft’s past.

The three-pass catch-up route

  1. Watch the current official recap. Blizzard’s Story So Far video or trailer restores the major sequence of events in minutes. In February 2026, Blizzard’s weekly news highlighted a Midnight Story So Far trailer covering Xal’atath’s actions throughout The War Within, from Dalaran’s destruction to the return of the Void Lord Dimensius.
  2. Play the ending of The War Within on your main hero. Complete the final available campaign chapters rather than starting an unrelated alt. This is where your character’s companions, choices and discoveries become emotionally meaningful.
  3. Use the Adventure Guide to enter Midnight. Accept the continuation quest shown there and follow the campaign markers. Blizzard’s current prologue directs players through the The War Within continuation, including the “Visions of a Shadowed Sun” quest.

Use Lorewalking only when you want additional historical context, and use the Returning Player Experience when you need a practical refresher on playing the game. Neither is a prerequisite for understanding the active handoff.

Why this order is better than replaying everything

Midnight is part of Blizzard’s continuing Worldsoul Saga. The immediately preceding campaign therefore carries more useful context than a chronological replay of every Warcraft release. The video supplies the connective tissue, the final The War Within chapters supply your hero’s point of view, and the bridge quests move that character into the new expansion.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Expansion launches also use a narrative handoff. When The War Within launched globally on August 26, 2024, Blizzard’s pre-expansion update directed level-70 characters who had completed the final Dragonflight questline chapter into the “Visions of Azeroth” questline. That example shows why the last campaign chapter matters: it is the doorway into the next story, not optional background text.

A recap alone is fast but impersonal. A full replay is personal but inefficient. The three-pass route deliberately combines those strengths.

What each pass contributes

Pass What you gain Best for What it does not replace
Story So Far video or trailer The broad sequence of major events and villains Anyone short on time or completely out of date Your hero’s in-game choices and conversations
Final The War Within campaign chapters Character-specific companions, decisions and revelations Players who want the story to feel personal A summary of older Warcraft history
Adventure Guide bridge quests The active handoff into Midnight, including “Visions of a Shadowed Sun” where directed by the prologue Every player starting the latest expansion Optional historical background
Lorewalking Focused historical explanations, including the elves of Quel’Thalas and sessions with Lorewalker Cho Lore-focused players The current campaign’s required progression
Returning Player Experience A guided reminder of how to play and how to reach current content Players who have forgotten controls or systems Plot details from the campaign

Before you start: choose the right hero and goal

Decide which character will enter Midnight before you begin the campaign catch-up. Playing the final chapters on that hero preserves the relevant point of view. If you watch the recap on one character but complete the campaign on another, the story remains understandable, but the emotional continuity is weaker.

  • Story-first goal: choose the hero whose prior campaign you remember best and finish that character’s available The War Within chapters.
  • Fastest possible goal: watch the latest recap, then go straight to the Adventure Guide and follow the bridge markers.
  • History-first goal: reserve time for Lorewalking after the active bridge is clear.
  • Return-to-play goal: start with the Returning Player Experience if you are unsure about movement, combat, interface or current systems.

Do not assume that a complete replay of older expansions is required. The official catch-up material is designed to get returning players onto the current path without demanding that they repeat the entire franchise.

Pass 1: watch the current Story So Far recap

Begin with Blizzard’s latest recap or trailer, not an old fan-made chronology. Blizzard’s launch material for The War Within explicitly invited players to “Catch up on the story so far with our video.” The current reference is the Midnight Story So Far trailer identified in Blizzard’s February 6, 2026 weekly news.

How to watch actively

  1. Watch the complete current recap once without pausing. Your first objective is to recover the order of events, not memorize every name.
  2. Write down only three categories: the major threat, the allies your hero is working with, and the unresolved problem that leads into Midnight.
  3. Replay any section that mentions Xal’atath, the destruction of Dalaran or the return of Dimensius. Those are specifically identified as part of the trailer’s coverage of The War Within.
  4. Stop once you can explain why the next campaign begins. Do not turn the recap into a substitute for playing the final chapters.

The video is the fastest broad recap because it compresses events that would otherwise require many quests. It is intentionally general: it cannot show the exact conversations, companions or decisions your hero experienced.

Pass 2: finish The War Within on your main hero

After the recap, play the concluding campaign chapters of The War Within on the hero you will take into Midnight. This is the most important playable step. The final chapters establish the immediate narrative state and preserve details that a general trailer cannot personalize.

What to pay attention to

  • Character-specific choices: note decisions made by your hero rather than by a generic narrator.
  • Companions: remember who is present, who has changed sides and who is waiting for the next objective.
  • Revelations: identify information your character learns directly, especially anything that changes the meaning of earlier events.
  • Unresolved objectives: keep track of threats or alliances that are not settled by the final chapter.

Read the campaign conversations instead of rushing only to combat objectives. You do not need to replay every side quest, dungeon or older zone to recover the handoff. The goal is the ending chapters that lead into the latest expansion.

Where the older “Visions of Azeroth” handoff fits

Players sometimes encounter references to “Visions of Azeroth” when reviewing the transition from Dragonflight to The War Within. Blizzard’s 2024 pre-expansion update called level-70 players who had completed the final Dragonflight campaign chapter into that questline. It is useful historical context for understanding how Blizzard structures an expansion handoff, but it is not a reason to replay Dragonflight before beginning the current Midnight route.

Pass 3: start the bridge from the Adventure Guide

Once your hero has the preceding campaign context, open the in-game Adventure Guide and look for the current continuation marker. Blizzard’s Midnight prologue directs players to continue the The War Within campaign there, including the “Visions of a Shadowed Sun” quest.

Follow the bridge in order

  1. Open the Adventure Guide on the hero that completed the relevant campaign ending.
  2. Select the marked continuation for the current expansion rather than an unrelated activity recommendation.
  3. Accept the bridge quest and read its opening briefing. This establishes why your hero is being called forward.
  4. Follow the campaign objectives and zone markers until the prologue hands you into the Midnight story.
  5. Keep the campaign tracker visible if you are returning after a long break; it prevents optional activities from obscuring the narrative route.

The exact availability of a marker can depend on your character’s progression and the current game state. If the continuation does not appear, verify that the hero has completed the preceding campaign’s final available chapter, then check the Adventure Guide again.

Use Lorewalking for the history you actually want

Lorewalking is an optional context layer, not a replacement for the bridge quests. The Midnight prologue includes Lorewalking on the elves of Quel’Thalas, which is particularly useful if you know the current characters but not the older history of their homeland.

Blizzard also added Lorewalking with Lorewalker Cho in the Legacy of Arathor update on June 17, 2025. Those sessions provide a focused way to review Warcraft history without replaying every historical campaign in game order.

When to insert Lorewalking

  • Before the bridge: choose this if names, factions or Quel’Thalas history are confusing enough to block your understanding.
  • After the bridge: choose this if you want the current plot first and historical detail second.
  • Between sessions: use a Lorewalking segment when you have only a short play window but still want meaningful story context.

Because Lorewalking covers background rather than the active handoff, it should not delay the Adventure Guide route for players eager to start the new campaign.

Use the Returning Player Experience when the problem is gameplay, not lore

The Midnight prologue went live on December 3, 2025 with a guided Returning Player Experience. Blizzard describes it as a way for returning players to remember how to play and get onto the path to the latest content.

Choose it when you have forgotten practical details: how your character’s abilities are arranged, how to navigate the current interface, or how to move from the starting area into current content. It is not a plot synopsis. Treat it as a control-and-systems refresher, then use the recap and campaign chapters for story.

Pick a route based on your available time

Your situation Recommended route What you can skip initially Result
You have only one short session Watch the current recap, then open the Adventure Guide Full prior-campaign replay and optional Lorewalking Broad plot awareness and a direct path to the bridge
You have several sessions and care about your hero Recap, final The War Within chapters, then the bridge Older expansion campaigns Fast context plus character-specific continuity
You love Warcraft history Recap, final chapters, bridge, then Quel’Thalas and Lorewalker Cho Lorewalking Only unrelated side content Current narrative plus focused historical depth
You have forgotten how to play Returning Player Experience, recap, final chapters, bridge Optional history until the controls feel comfortable Gameplay confidence and story continuity
You are starting on a different hero Watch the recap, complete the bridge requirements available to that hero, then consult Lorewalking as needed Repeating every character’s prior story Efficient onboarding with less personal continuity

Troubleshooting common catch-up problems

“I watched the trailer but still do not care about my hero.”

The trailer is intentionally broad. Play the final The War Within chapters on the hero you will use, and read the conversations involving that character’s companions. The missing feeling is usually character-specific context, not more historical chronology.

“I cannot find the next quest.”

Open the Adventure Guide and look for the current campaign continuation. Confirm that the hero completed the preceding campaign’s final available chapter. The prologue’s bridge includes “Visions of a Shadowed Sun”; use that named quest as a recognition point rather than accepting a random activity from the guide.

“I keep getting lost in old lore.”

Pause the historical detour and complete the active bridge first. Then use Lorewalking on the elves of Quel’Thalas or Lorewalker Cho’s sessions to answer specific questions. Focused background is more efficient than trying to reconstruct every past release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The story makes sense, but the game feels unfamiliar.”

Use the Returning Player Experience. It exists to restore how to play and how to reach current content; watching more story videos will not replace that practical orientation.

“I started with an alt and the dialogue feels disconnected.”

That is a continuity trade-off. Continue with the alt if it is the hero you want for Midnight, but use the recap to fill broad gaps and do not expect the alt to reproduce choices or companions from another character’s campaign.

Timeline of the official catch-up pieces

Date Milestone Why it matters for a returning player
August 26, 2024 The War Within launched globally Defines the preceding expansion whose concluding campaign supplies the immediate setup for Midnight.
June 17, 2025 Legacy of Arathor added Lorewalking with Lorewalker Cho Provides an optional historical refresher.
December 3, 2025 Midnight prologue “The Warning” went live Added the Returning Player Experience and Quel’Thalas Lorewalking, and directed players toward the campaign continuation.
February 6, 2026 Blizzard’s weekly news referenced the Midnight Story So Far trailer Identifies the current broad recap, including Xal’atath’s The War Within actions and Dimensius’s return.

A compact checklist before entering Midnight

  • Watch the latest official Story So Far recap or trailer.
  • Know the three broad anchors: Xal’atath’s actions, Dalaran’s destruction and the return of Dimensius.
  • Complete the final The War Within campaign chapters on your intended hero.
  • Open the Adventure Guide and locate the current continuation.
  • Follow “Visions of a Shadowed Sun” when the prologue presents it.
  • Use Lorewalking for Quel’Thalas or broader Warcraft history only when you need it.
  • Use the Returning Player Experience if your controls, interface or route to current content are rusty.

This sequence keeps the active narrative moving while giving you a deliberate place to add personal continuity, historical context or gameplay practice.
