Validate the browser, viewport, fonts, and page timing in the actual runner. Differences in environment or load timing can create image changes that are not meaningful site updates.

Using Percy with existing Playwright tests
BrowserStack’s Percy integration page, reviewed September 29, 2026, specifies Node 18 or newer, @playwright/test 1.60 or newer, @percy/cli 1.32.6 or newer, and @percy/playwright 1.1.2 or newer for the described setup. These are version-specific requirements and may change; check the integration page when setting up.
The documented integration applies Percy to Playwright screenshot assertions; BrowserStack says, “You don’t have to change your test files. Percy applies to every toHaveScreenshot() call in your test suite.” Treat that as a statement about this integration, not a guarantee that every existing test suite needs no other setup. Percy on Automate has additional caveats: tests must run on BrowserStack, and the documentation describes limitations around element captures and mask/clip.

Account for screenshot volume and retention
BrowserStack’s 2026 Percy documentation reviewed September 29, 2026 lists 5,000 free monthly screenshots for Percy. It also says paid plans include units and additional usage is charged as overage. This is a vendor-specific allowance, not a general screenshot-tool benchmark; confirm current plan limits before relying on it.
Estimate recurring volume by multiplying the number of URLs by capture times, browser-and-width combinations, and any distinct page states you intend to render. Also decide how long to retain images or comparison builds. The available sources do not establish one retention policy or total cost across all providers.

For any approach, use representative pages that require the same authentication and consent state as the production capture. Check how the runner supplies credentials and how it protects saved screenshots, since page images can contain private information.

Before treating visual differences as regressions, keep capture conditions stable: browser, viewport, fonts, page readiness, and relevant dynamic content. For visual testing, define baseline ownership and whether a change is reviewed or blocks the pipeline.
