For music you own and want to play without an internet connection, the best choice depends on where your files live. Use Musicolet for a straightforward Android phone or SD-card library, Poweramp when synchronized lyrics and detailed playback controls are priorities, MusicBee or foobar2000 for a Windows desktop collection, and Plexamp when a Plex Media Server should deliver one library to several devices. Keep lyrics in supported tags or in correctly named LRC/TXT sidecar files, and choose storage before you start copying a large collection.

Which offline player fits your library?

There is no single replacement that works best for every setup. A phone-only library has different needs from a Windows archive or a server that streams to several homes. This table maps the main options to the workflow they suit.

Option Primary platform or location Best fit Lyrics approach Main trade-off
Musicolet Android; files stored on the phone or a compatible SD card Simple, offline playback of an existing MP3 or FLAC collection Lyrics support is listed in its store description; verify the current listing and exact format behavior Android-focused, with no server library for other devices
Poweramp Android; local files Playback controls and synchronized lyrics from local files ID3 tags, MP4/M4A atoms, and matching LRC files; synchronized lyrics are supported from build 948 onward Still a device-local player, so each device needs access to the files
MusicBee Windows desktop Feature-rich organization and management of a large local library Depends on the current tag, component, or external-file workflow you configure Windows-first; confirm the lyric component and synchronization behavior you need
foobar2000 Windows desktop Highly customizable playback and library views Usually depends on tags, components, or external lyric files More setup and configuration than a phone-first player
Plexamp with Plex Media Server Personal server; playback on phones, computers, and other clients One centrally managed collection available locally or remotely LRC timed lyrics and TXT plain-text sidecars, with strict filename and folder matching Requires server storage, indexing, and network setup

What “offline Spotify alternative” actually means

Your files versus a streaming catalog

Spotify’s local-files feature refers to audio that is not hosted by Spotify. You import music from your own devices and play it from the device where those files are stored. That is different from downloading tracks from Spotify’s licensed catalog for offline playback: catalog downloads remain controlled by the service and its app. A local-library replacement starts with legally obtained MP3, FLAC, AAC, ALAC, or other files that you control.

Decide where the master library lives

Choose a permanent home before installing a player. A small collection can live in internal phone storage. A larger Android collection may fit on a compatible microSD card. A Windows archive can remain on an internal or USB drive. If several devices need the same files, place the master copy on a NAS or personal server and let a server application index it. The player is then an access layer; it should not be the only copy of your music.

Best Android choices

Musicolet: the simple phone-and-SD-card route

Musicolet is positioned as an offline, ad-free Android local player. Its store description lists lyrics support and does not list an internet permission, although store wording and permissions can change. It is a practical starting point when your MP3 or FLAC files are already on an Android phone or a compatible SD card and you do not need a server to feed other devices.

  • Use it when you want the shortest path from a folder of music to a browsable library.
  • Keep artist, album, disc, and track tags consistent so albums sort correctly.
  • Test one album with your chosen lyric format before moving thousands of files.
  • Recheck the current store listing for permissions and supported lyric behavior because app listings are updated over time.

Musicolet is less suitable when timed, line-by-line lyrics are the deciding feature or when the same collection must be served to computers and remote clients. In those cases, Poweramp or a server-centered setup gives you a clearer path.

Poweramp: the strongest Android choice for synchronized lyrics

Poweramp’s official FAQ states that Poweramp v3 supports lyrics in ID3 tags, in MP4/M4A atoms, or through matching .LRC files from build 948 onward. It also states that synchronized lyrics—words that scroll according to time codes supplied for each line—are supported from build 948 onward. That makes Poweramp the most explicit Android recommendation when local, time-synchronized lyrics matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a reliable Poweramp library, keep a track’s audio and its LRC file together, use the same base filename, and check that the time codes are valid. Embedded lyrics are convenient when you want one self-contained audio file; sidecars are easier to edit without rewriting the audio. MP4 and M4A users should preserve the lyric atom when retagging so the text is not stripped.

Windows desktop alternatives

MusicBee: organization first

MusicBee is the feature-rich library manager in this group. It suits listeners who want to clean tags, browse by artist or album, manage a substantial local archive, and keep desktop playback under one application. Treat lyrics as part of the library-management plan rather than assuming every lyric feature is built in: the exact experience can depend on tags, a component, or an external lyric file in the current release.

Before committing to a large migration, install the current release, load a small test folder, and verify three things: whether your preferred lyric source is read, whether timed lines advance correctly, and whether editing tags preserves the lyric data. Keep a backup of the original files while you test.

foobar2000: maximum customization

foobar2000 is a highly customizable local player for Windows. It is a good fit when you prefer to assemble your own views, tagging rules, conversion tools, and lyric workflow. Its flexibility also means that lyric behavior is not a single fixed feature: tags, components, and external files can each be involved. Confirm the component and version you intend to use before promising synchronized lyrics to yourself or other listeners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose foobar2000 when you value control over the library more than a ready-made phone experience. A disciplined folder structure and documented component setup will make the installation reproducible if you move to another PC.

Plexamp for a server-centered collection

When Plexamp makes sense

Plex can stream a personal music library locally or remotely through Plexamp. This is the strongest option when one master collection should be available on multiple phones, computers, or locations without copying the entire archive to each device. The cost is operational rather than purely musical: you must maintain server storage, let Plex index the files, and provide network access for remote use.

How Plex sidecar lyrics are matched

Plex supports two external lyric formats: LRC (.lrc) for timed lyrics and TXT (.txt) for plain text. The lyric file must sit beside the audio track in the same directory and have an identical filename apart from the extension. For example, 01 - Example Song.flac must be paired with 01 - Example Song.lrc or 01 - Example Song.txt. A spelling difference, extra punctuation, or a different folder can prevent matching.

LRC is the appropriate choice for scrolling lines because it carries time codes. TXT is useful when you only need readable words and do not have timing data. Keep one sidecar per track and avoid renaming audio files without renaming their lyric partners at the same time.

Lyric formats: embedded tags, LRC, and TXT

Format Where it lives Timing Useful when Watch for
Embedded ID3 lyrics Inside MP3 metadata May contain text; synchronized behavior depends on the player and lyric data You want an MP3 that carries its lyrics when copied Retagging software can remove or rewrite fields
MP4/M4A lyric atom Inside the M4A or MP4 container Poweramp reads the lyric atom; synchronization depends on the stored lyric data and player Your library is primarily AAC, M4A, or MP4 Use a tag editor that preserves the atom
LRC sidecar Separate file beside the audio Timed line display Poweramp or Plex users who want synchronized lyrics Base filename, directory, and time-code syntax must be correct
TXT sidecar Separate file beside the audio No timing Plex users who need plain readable lyrics Plex requires an identical base filename and shared directory

Do not mix naming conventions within one album. Decide whether your master is tag-based or sidecar-based, document that decision, and use a consistent rule for future additions. Sidecars are easier to edit in a text editor; embedded lyrics travel with the audio file and are less likely to be separated during a simple copy.

A dependable migration workflow

  1. Inventory your legal files. Gather the MP3, FLAC, M4A, and other files you own into a stable master folder. Remove accidental duplicates and keep the original hierarchy until the new player reads it correctly.
  2. Normalize the tags. Check artist, album artist, album, disc number, track number, year, and genre. Consistent tags prevent split albums and incorrect track order in every player.
  3. Choose the lyric strategy. Use ID3 tags for self-contained MP3s, MP4/M4A atoms for supported containers, matching LRC files for timed lyrics, or matching TXT files when timing is unnecessary. Do not assume a lyric file will be found merely because it is somewhere in the library.
  4. Build a small test set. Select an album containing an MP3, a FLAC, and an M4A if those formats are in your collection. Add one embedded lyric, one LRC sidecar, and one TXT sidecar where applicable.
  5. Install and scan the player. Point Musicolet or Poweramp at the Android folder, import the folder into MusicBee or foobar2000 on Windows, or add the music directory to Plex Media Server. Wait for indexing to finish before judging missing tracks.
  6. Verify playback and lyrics. Check album order, artwork, character accents, line timing, pause/resume behavior, and whether the app can play with the network disabled. For Plex, verify the audio and lyric files are in the same directory with identical base names.
  7. Copy or sync the full library. Once the test passes, transfer the remaining folders. Keep a second backup on another drive or server; an offline player does not protect against disk or phone failure.

Storage choices for an offline library

Storage location Best for Advantages Limitations
Phone internal storage Small to medium Android collections Always available to the device; no accessory required Consumes phone space and must be recopied after a reset or replacement
Compatible microSD card Expanding an Android phone or dedicated player Removable capacity and simple folder-based transfer Not every device accepts every card; card failure can remove the only copy
USB drive Windows libraries and transportable backups Large capacity and easy computer-to-computer movement Requires an adapter or connection and is not permanently available to a phone
NAS Household libraries shared over a local network Central storage and a useful backup target Needs network configuration and does not by itself provide a player
Personal server Plexamp access from several devices or locations One indexed library with local and remote streaming Requires ongoing storage, indexing, updates, and remote-access planning

For an Android-only collection, internal storage or a compatible SD card is the most direct route. For several clients, a NAS or personal server avoids maintaining separate copies, but you should still keep an independent backup.

Transfer and sync by scenario

Android phone or SD card

Copy the master music folder to a stable location such as Music/Artist/Album. Preserve the exact audio-and-sidecar pairing. Open the player, grant access to that folder when Android requests it, and run a library scan. If you replace a card, copy the whole folder tree rather than individual tracks so LRC and TXT files remain beside their audio.

Windows desktop

Keep the master folder on an internal or USB drive, then point MusicBee or foobar2000 to that root. Do not reorganize files from inside one application while another application is indexing the same folder. After a move, rescan the new path and inspect a few albums for missing artwork, tags, and lyric files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plex Media Server and Plexamp

Place audio and sidecar lyrics in the directories Plex indexes. Match names exactly, refresh the music library, and test a local client before enabling remote access. Remote playback depends on the server and network being reachable; files cached on a device are a separate offline strategy and should be checked in that client before leaving home.

Privacy, cost, and maintenance trade-offs

Local players keep playback tied to files you control and can work without an account or streaming catalog. A server adds convenience across devices but creates an always-on service to maintain. Android and Windows players are generally simpler to deploy because they read a folder directly; Plexamp trades that simplicity for centralized access.

The supplied product information does not establish current prices, subscription terms, or affiliate arrangements for these apps. Check the current store, license, and server documentation before purchase. App features, permissions, lyric handling, and release builds can change, so verify the version you install—especially when synchronized lyrics are essential.

Troubleshooting missing or unsynchronized lyrics

The player shows no lyrics

  • Confirm the lyric format is supported by that player. Poweramp’s documented local formats are ID3, MP4/M4A atoms, and matching LRC files from build 948 onward. Plex recognizes LRC and TXT sidecars.
  • Check the filename character by character. For Plex, the audio and lyric files must share the same directory and base name.
  • Rescan or refresh the library after copying files; an earlier index may not know that a sidecar was added.
  • Open the lyric file in a text editor to ensure it contains actual text and is not zero bytes or saved with an unexpected extension such as .lrc.txt.

Lines do not scroll in time

  • Use an LRC file with valid time codes rather than a plain TXT file.
  • On Poweramp, verify the installed build is 948 or newer for synchronized lyrics.
  • Check whether the lyric timestamps match the exact recording; a live, remastered, or edited version may need different timing.
  • If a Windows player relies on a component, confirm that component is installed and enabled in the current release.

Albums or tracks are split incorrectly

  • Normalize album artist, album title, disc number, and track number tags.
  • Use consistent zero-padding and numbering in filenames when your chosen player sorts by filename.
  • Remove duplicate copies from watched folders so the index is not presenting two versions of the same track.

Decision guide

  • Choose Musicolet if you have an Android phone or SD card, want an offline local player, and do not need a central server.
  • Choose Poweramp if synchronized lyrics are a primary requirement and you can keep the files on Android, using build 948 or newer.
  • Choose MusicBee if Windows library organization, tagging, and desktop management matter most; validate the lyric component or file workflow you plan to use.
  • Choose foobar2000 if you want to design a highly customized Windows setup and are comfortable assembling the lyric workflow yourself.
  • Choose Plexamp with Plex Media Server if several devices need one centrally stored collection and you accept the additional server and network maintenance.

The practical replacement for Spotify is therefore a combination of owned files, consistent metadata, a lyric format your player explicitly reads, and storage sized for the whole collection. Pick the player after deciding whether your priority is Android simplicity, synchronized lyrics, Windows management, or server-wide access.
