The best first-day setup for a Galaxy S25 Ultra is not one extreme preset. Install updates, secure the phone, audit privacy permissions, then tune display, notifications, battery and camera settings around how you actually use it. Because Samsung changes menu labels across Android 15, Android 16, Android 17, One UI releases, carriers and regions, check your software version first and use Settings search whenever a path does not match.
1. Check your software version before changing settings
Galaxy S25 Ultra instructions can differ by Android and One UI build. Samsung publishes separate manuals for Android 15, Android 16 and Android 17; the Android 17 manual was modified on October 7, 2026. A carrier or regional build can also move a menu or rename a control.
- Open Settings > About phone > Software information and note the Android version and One UI version.
- Open Settings > Software update > Download and install. Install available updates before following a detailed menu path.
- If a label is missing, tap the search icon in Settings and search for the control by name: Always On Display, screen timeout, Power saving, Auto Blocker, permission manager or Motion smoothness.
One UI 7 adds natural-language search in Settings, so searches such as “reduce screen battery use” can help locate a renamed control. Treat the paths below as the usual location for current Galaxy software, not as a guarantee for every carrier build.

2. Secure the phone before adding convenience features
Use a strong PIN or password and register your fingerprint
Go to Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Screen lock type (the wording can vary) and choose a six-digit-or-longer PIN or a password you do not reuse elsewhere. Register fingerprints under Settings > Security and privacy > Biometrics. Add the same finger from more than one angle if unlocking is unreliable, and register a second finger you can use when holding the phone differently.

Review theft-protection controls
Open Settings > Security and privacy and inspect the theft-protection and authentication options offered by your build. Samsung’s recent update notes describe privacy alerts, failed-authentication lock, Identity Check and Auto Blocker controls. Turn on protections you can live with, and read each description before enabling an option that may delay account recovery or require additional verification away from familiar places.
- Failed-authentication lock: helps limit repeated unauthorized attempts.
- Identity Check: may require stronger verification for sensitive changes, depending on region and software version.
- Auto Blocker: can restrict installations or actions that increase malware risk; verify its individual switches if you install apps outside the standard app store.
Save your Samsung and Google account recovery methods somewhere accessible before relying on advanced theft controls. A locked phone is only useful if you can still recover your accounts when your usual device or number is unavailable.

Review high-impact permissions
Open Settings > Security and privacy > Permission manager. Review Camera, Microphone, Location and Notifications first; these permissions reveal the most about your activity or can expose you to unwanted interruptions.
- Set location to Allow only while using the app unless continuous access is essential, such as navigation or a trusted safety feature.
- Set camera and microphone access to Ask every time or deny it for apps that have no clear reason to use them.
- Remove notification access from apps that do not need to read or act on notifications.
- Revisit unused apps after a few days; a permission that seemed necessary during setup may not be needed in normal use.
Android can reset permissions for unused apps. That is useful protection, but check important apps after a long period without opening them so a revoked permission does not surprise you.
Turn on browser protections
In Samsung Internet, open its privacy or security settings and inspect the controls documented in the current user guide:
- Tracker blocking and Smart anti-tracking reduce cross-site tracking.
- Malicious-site warnings help identify known dangerous pages.
- Automatic-download blocking prevents websites from silently placing files on the phone.
- HTTPS upgrading attempts to use an encrypted connection when a site supports it.
These controls improve privacy without requiring you to deny every browser permission. They can occasionally affect a site that depends on trackers, automatic downloads or an unusual login flow; if a page breaks, disable the specific protection temporarily rather than turning off every privacy feature.

4. Tune the display for comfort, visibility and battery
Choose dark mode and adaptive brightness
Open Settings > Display. Enable Dark mode if you prefer darker backgrounds or use the phone at night. It is primarily a comfort and preference choice, not a guaranteed battery-saving switch for every app.
Leave Adaptive brightness enabled if you move between indoor and outdoor lighting. It adjusts brightness using the ambient-light sensor. If it repeatedly chooses a level you dislike, adjust the slider manually; the phone learns from those changes.
Use Eye comfort shield when evening glare bothers you
Eye comfort shield is in the Display controls or Quick settings on many builds. Schedule it for the hours when you read at night, or turn it on manually. The warmer color can make white backgrounds look yellow and can affect color-sensitive photo or video work, so turn it off temporarily when judging color.
Set Motion smoothness deliberately
Under Settings > Display > Motion smoothness, choose the mode that matches your priority:
| Priority | Setting approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid scrolling and animation | Use the higher or adaptive refresh-rate option available on your build. | More frequent screen refreshes can use more battery. |
| Longer runtime | Use the standard or lower refresh-rate option. | Scrolling and animations feel less fluid. |
There is no universal best choice. Test your normal apps for a day before deciding that a lower rate is worth the change in feel.
Set brightness, extra brightness and timeout
Keep brightness as low as is comfortable. Extra brightness raises the maximum available brightness for difficult lighting, but Samsung explicitly warns that it uses more battery. Leave it off unless you need it outdoors, and turn it off again when you return indoors.
Set Settings > Display > Screen timeout to the shortest interval that does not interrupt your reading or work. Thirty seconds is a sensible privacy-and-battery starting point; choose a longer interval only when you regularly consult the screen without touching it.

5. Control what appears on the lock screen
Hide private notification content
Open Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen (or search for that phrase). Choose whether to show content, hide content, or show notifications without details. Hiding content is the safer default if other people may see your phone on a desk, in a car or during a meeting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For sensitive apps, open the app’s notification category and disable lock-screen display or content separately. This lets you keep useful alerts while preventing message previews from appearing.
Configure Always On Display
Open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display. Choose a schedule or tap-to-show behavior if you want glanceability without keeping the panel visible continuously. A continuously visible AOD is convenient, but it can add power use and expose information to anyone looking at the phone.
Pair AOD choices with your notification policy: a visible clock with hidden notification details gives you time-at-a-glance while limiting private information.
6. Measure battery use before restricting apps
Inspect the redesigned Battery screen
Open Settings > Battery and review recent usage before enabling aggressive restrictions. Look for an app with unusually high foreground or background use, a display setting that accounts for much of the drain, or poor cellular reception that keeps the modem working harder. Measurements from your own first day are more useful than a generic promise of a percentage improvement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the appropriate Power saving mode
Samsung provides adjustable power-saving controls. Use the normal or Standard Power saving profile for moderate savings when you need them. Reserve Maximum Power saving for situations in which extending standby time matters more than features and responsiveness; it can substantially limit background activity, connectivity, performance or available apps.
| Battery situation | Recommended action | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal day and adequate charge | Leave Power saving off and fix the largest drain shown in Battery settings. | Full performance and background behavior. |
| Long day or limited charging | Enable Standard Power saving and keep only essential notifications and sync. | Moderate restrictions with most core functions available. |
| Emergency low charge | Enable Maximum Power saving after saving work and informing essential contacts. | Substantial feature limits in exchange for longer standby. |
Do not disable every background process on day one. Aggressive restrictions can delay messages, stop wearable synchronization and make navigation or backups unreliable. Change one control at a time, then observe the Battery screen again.

7. Set camera defaults around how you shoot
Review the controls you will actually use
Open the Camera app and inspect the default Photo and Video screens. The documented controls worth checking are:
- Aspect ratio: choose the shape that matches where you share or display images. A wider or taller preview can crop differently than the phone’s sensor output.
- Flash: leave it on automatic if you want the camera to decide, or disable it when you prefer available light.
- Timer: set a delay for group photos or tripod shots; turn it off afterward so it does not slow spontaneous pictures.
- Front/rear switching: confirm the camera opens to the lens you normally use.
- Camera modes: keep frequently used modes easy to reach and move rarely used modes out of the immediate strip if your version allows it.
There is no evidence for one universally superior S25 Ultra camera preset. A person who shares vertical social posts, someone who prints photos and someone who records fast-moving children need different aspect-ratio, timer and flash defaults. Take several test shots in daylight and indoors, then change only the controls that repeatedly slow you down or produce the wrong framing.

Check recognition and charging behavior
Remove the S Pen, write in a notes app, open Air command and test a few hover or shortcut actions. If the pen is not recognized, do not assume it is defective immediately.
- Remove any magnetic case or cover.
- Restart the phone and test the original pen again.
- Install pending software updates and retest.
- Try the pen on an uncovered phone and check whether writing works across different areas of the screen.
Current guidance identifies magnetic covers as a possible cause of S Pen recognition problems. If the pen works after removing the case, use a non-magnetic or S25 Ultra-compatible cover rather than replacing functioning hardware.
When a replacement makes sense
Buy a replacement S Pen for Galaxy S25 Ultra only when the original is lost or damaged. Verify that the listing names the exact S25 Ultra model; pens for other Galaxy devices may fit physically but not provide the same functions.
9. Pick a first-day profile based on your priority
| Your priority | Settings to emphasize | Settings to avoid overusing |
|---|---|---|
| Battery life | Adaptive brightness, shorter timeout, standard Motion smoothness, measured app restrictions and Standard Power saving when needed. | Extra brightness, continuous AOD and Maximum Power saving during normal use. |
| Privacy | Strong lock method, hidden lock-screen content, permission review, tracker blocking, malicious-site warnings and Auto Blocker controls. | Convenient previews or automatic access that reveal information while locked. |
| Eye comfort | Dark mode, Adaptive brightness, scheduled Eye comfort shield and a timeout that does not keep the screen glowing. | Judging photo color while Eye comfort shield is active. |
| Responsiveness | Higher Motion smoothness, unrestricted essential apps and normal Power mode. | Maximum Power saving or blanket background restrictions. |
| Camera speed | Correct default lens, familiar aspect ratio, automatic flash and no unnecessary timer delay. | Leaving a timer or unusual aspect ratio enabled after a one-off shot. |
10. A practical first-day checklist
- Record the Android and One UI versions, then install updates.
- Set a strong PIN or password and register fingerprints.
- Review theft-protection, failed-authentication, Identity Check and Auto Blocker controls.
- Audit camera, microphone, location and notification permissions.
- Enable browser tracker blocking, smart anti-tracking, malicious-site warnings, automatic-download blocking and HTTPS upgrading where appropriate.
- Choose Dark mode, Adaptive brightness, Eye comfort shield, Motion smoothness and Screen timeout deliberately.
- Hide lock-screen notification content if privacy matters and set an AOD schedule that matches your habits.
- Read the Battery screen before restricting apps; use Standard or Maximum Power saving only for the situation that requires it.
- Set camera aspect ratio, flash, timer and default lens for your normal shooting workflow.
- Test the S Pen without a magnetic case before replacing it or buying accessories.
Recheck these settings after a major One UI update. Samsung can add controls, rename labels or change their location, while your priorities may also change as you learn how you use the phone.
