There is no single best base location in Enshrouded. Choose a waterfront, waterfall or frozen-lake site if the view and atmosphere are the point; choose a tower, plateau or central ruin if shorter journeys, resource access and safer glider routes matter more. Your Flame Altar is the permanent decision: it defines the build volume and fast-travel destination, cannot simply be moved, and must sit on reasonably level ground outside the Shroud. The right answer therefore depends on your progression stage, building footprint and tolerance for enemies, terrain work and flooding.
Where should I build my first base?
For the first hours, use the Longkeep plains as a temporary hub. The area is low-threat and close to the opening route, with a ruin slab, well, shelter, fireplace and bed. Because the nearby Cinder Vault already provides fast travel, placing a permanent altar there can duplicate a travel point you already have. Move to a more useful long-term site once you have explored the surrounding routes.
Best early farm base: Harvest Homestead
Harvest Homestead is the strongest early permanent choice if you want farming and a ready-made home. It includes a furnished farmhouse, second cottage, cellar, prepared soil beds and corn fields. A level 1 altar covers the house; upgrading it extends coverage toward the fields and Woodgard. You get a functioning settlement quickly without committing to a massive restoration project.
Best early scenic base: Braelyn Bridge lakeside
Braelyn Bridge combines level ground, a pond, an island and ruins. That mix leaves room for a settlement that can grow with your character while retaining a waterside centerpiece.

What is the best base location in Enshrouded?
The best all-round answer changes with your goal. Blue Goblet Tavern, Shorewatch, Braelyn Bridge and Rothstep are balanced choices because a usable structure or water feature offsets some logistical cost. Builders seeking a dramatic panorama should look first at the waterfront and waterfall sites below; players optimizing travel should start with Fort Kelvin, the Mistbury hub, Shorewatch or high ground in the Nomad Highlands.

Where is the best scenic or waterfront base?
Waterfront locations make memorable homes, but they trade convenience for atmosphere. Andrea Shearon describes Embervale as having “no bad options” and says she generally favors scenic waterfront properties over strategic positioning. Scout each site for patrols, slope and the exact altar footprint before spending resources.
Pondside ruins west of Fort Kelvin
An island, pier and pond naturally form a settlement center. The nearby path can carry enemy patrols, so clear and observe the route before building bedrooms or crafting rooms.

The neighboring waterfall and hidden alcove create a strong fantasy backdrop. Dense foliage can make the area dark, which matters if you want clear sightlines or a bright farming yard.
Bittermelt Lake
This partly frozen lake and frozen waterfall sit among snowy mountains. It is an endgame project: difficult terrain and local threats reward players who already have suitable gear and patience for foundation work.
Riverreach, Driftwood Wake and Fish Farm
Riverreach is a monumental restoration spanning the area’s largest waterfall, with working waterwheels and underground cells. Driftwood Wake is smaller, closer to the water and better for fishing. Which base is best for fast travel and resources?
Function-first bases reduce repeated climbs, Shroud crossings and long mining runs. Fort Kelvin turns a large abandoned town into a fortified settlement; its central square, tunnels and tower provide a natural defensive layout. The Mistbury Catacombs area is a central grassland hub near Flame Shrines, Flame Sanctums, clay, scrap, cloth and the route toward the Pillars of Creation.
South of Pikemead’s Reach sits on the near side of a major Shroud wall, shortening dangerous crossings while keeping copper, hardwood, amber, shrines and sanctums nearby. Shorewatch fills a sparse Kindlewastes travel gap; clear its enemies before placing an altar, then use the tower for longer glider jumps.
For aerial movement, the top of the Pillars of Creation provides easy launches into southern Embervale. The northern pillar is easier to build on; the southern pillar has nearby copper mines but an Engine Chambers structure. The Nomad Highlands plateau similarly links routes south to Springlands and west to Revelwood. Put the main hub on its flattest section and reserve the edges for lookout platforms.

How does the Flame Altar change the decision?
The altar is the hard boundary for construction and the most important placement constraint. It cannot normally be placed inside the Shroud, needs reasonably level ground without obstacles, and the Construction Hammer stops working outside its boundary.
- Level 1: 40 m × 40 m × 40 m build volume.
- Level 2: 80 m on each side.
- Level 3: 120 m on each side.
- Level 4: 160 m on each side.
Terrain changes outside a base can disappear after about 30 minutes or a restart. Altars cannot be moved: extinguishing and replacing one loses its size upgrades. Each altar is also a fast-travel destination and provides Flame upgrades and skill resets, so avoid placing one directly beside an Ancient Spire unless duplicating that travel point serves your build.
A world initially allows two altars. Current 1.0 guides report 15 before the final progression step and 16 at Flame level 11; that level also enables Shroud removal or repulsion. Exact legacy values and recipe costs may change, so treat those progression figures as guide-reported rather than immutable rules.

What can go wrong at a beautiful site?
- Flooding: Lakes and ponds help farming, fishing and stamina management, but water can stop crafting stations and unsettle bed assignments. Keep critical stations and sleeping quarters above the highest practical waterline.
- Uneven ground: Waterfront and waterfall lots often require stepped foundations, retaining walls and more blocks than a plateau.
- Patrols and Shroud: Enemies can enter and attack you even though the game has no base raids that damage buildings. Clear patrol routes and keep a retreat path.
- Overlapping travel points: An altar beside an Ancient Spire spends a scarce placement on redundant fast travel.
- Oversized restoration: Riverreach and Fort Kelvin can consume more time than a new build. Enshrouded.tools catalogs 225 ruins with dimensions, altar coverage and block composition, which is useful when planning a restoration before committing.
How should you choose between form and function?
- Decide whether the base is primarily a home, a farm, a restoration showcase or a travel hub.
- Scout the full altar footprint, including vertical space, before placing it.
- Check enemy paths, Shroud edges, water height and the nearest Ancient Spire.
- Match the site to progression: Longkeep and Harvest Homestead early; Blue Goblet Tavern, Shorewatch and the highlands mid-game; Bittermelt Lake, Rothstep and Veilwater Basin sites late.
- Reserve later altars for regional gaps or specialist builds rather than replacing a well-developed home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can enemies destroy my Enshrouded base while I am away?
There are no base raids that damage buildings. Enemies can still enter the settlement and attack your character, so open approaches and patrol routes should be treated as security concerns.
Is a lake base better for farming than a dry plateau?
Water improves the appeal of farming and supports fishing, but flooding can disable crafting stations and disturb bed assignments. Build essential rooms on raised ground and use the shoreline for optional plots and scenery.
How many Flame Altars can one world have in Enshrouded 1.0?
The commonly reported progression is two initially, 15 before the final progression step, and 16 at Flame level 11. The level-11 milestone is also associated with Shroud removal or repulsion; guide values can change as 1.0 data is refined.
What should I check before restoring a ruin?
Measure the ruin against the altar’s current build volume, inspect which blocks and floors are missing, and verify that the surrounding terrain will not erase after a restart. A catalog entry can estimate dimensions and altar coverage, but only an in-game scout confirms slope, water and the exact fit.
