The best developer conference for you in 2022 depended on what you wanted to learn: broad engineering practice, a specific language community, cloud-native infrastructure, or cloud services. This retrospective shortlist groups representative events by those needs rather than treating unlike conferences as a universal ranking. All listed 2022 dates have passed; this is not a ticket or registration guide.
How to choose among the 2022 conferences
“Developer conference” covered very different experiences in 2022. Some events centered on technical talks and engineering practice; others served a particular programming-language community or cloud ecosystem. Access also varied: some listings described in-person gatherings, some online programming, and some offered more than one way to attend.
The picks below are organized by subject fit, audience, format and location, not by a shared score. The available publisher roundups do not establish a common ranking method or comparable measure of conference quality.
For broad engineering and architecture
QCon London and QCon San Francisco
InfoQ announced QCon London for April 4–6, 2022, and QCon San Francisco for October 24–28. It characterized QCon as a curated learning experience focused on engineering patterns and practices, technical talks and connection with a global professional community. The announced London/online program included Java, microservices, APIs, data pipelines, machine-learning systems, WebAssembly and staff-plus engineering tracks. InfoQ’s January 2022 announcement
#1 Best Overall
For San Francisco, New Relic listed the Hyatt Regency as the venue, with conference sessions October 24–26 and workshops October 27–28. Its track descriptions included practical security, engineering culture, MLOps and site reliability engineering (SRE). New Relic’s 2022 conference roundup
These QCon programs suited engineers and technical leaders looking for cross-cutting practices rather than a single language ecosystem. The London announcement’s online program is explicitly described; the sources summarized here do not establish a comparable remote-attendance option for San Francisco.
Rank #2
Strange Loop
New Relic listed Strange Loop for September 22–24 in St. Louis. Its multidisciplinary subject range included emerging programming languages, alternative databases, concurrency, distributed systems, security and the web. Example topics in the roundup included observability, JavaScript debugging and an astronomy survey. That breadth made it a fit for developers curious about ideas across software disciplines, rather than attendees seeking a single-vendor cloud agenda. New Relic’s 2022 conference roundup
For language and framework communities
RubyKaigi
New Relic listed RubyKaigi for September 8–10 in Mie, Japan, and described 2022 as having both in-person and virtual editions. It was the most direct match in this shortlist for developers whose main interest was Ruby and its practitioner community. New Relic’s 2022 conference roundup

DjangoCon Europe
Listed for September 21–25 in Porto, Portugal, DjangoCon EU was described as its 14th edition and as a community-oriented event to teach skills and practices to Django practitioners and online viewers. It suited developers working with Django who valued framework-specific learning and community, with the listing indicating an online audience as well as an in-person event. DrupalCon Europe
New Relic listed DrupalCon Europe for September 20–23 in Prague and described an online program with five tracks. One, Makers & Builders, covered DevOps, backend and frontend development, site building and accessibility. This was a relevant choice for Drupal practitioners looking across implementation and site-building work; the listing identifies an online program, but does not establish the full attendance arrangements for every part of the event. Rank #4
For cloud-native and cloud-platform work
KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America
New Relic listed the Cloud Native Computing Foundation’s flagship conference for adopters, developers and practitioners for October 24–28 in Detroit. Its description covered Kubernetes, Prometheus, Envoy and related cloud-native projects. It was the clearest fit here for people building or operating cloud-native infrastructure and looking to engage with that project ecosystem. The cited listing identifies the dates and city but does not specify remote access. New Relic’s 2022 conference roundup
AWS re:Invent
New Relic listed AWS re:Invent for November 28–December 2 in Las Vegas, with attendance available in person or virtually. Its stated emphasis was cloud computing, making it a broad match for developers and practitioners whose work involved AWS or cloud services generally. The description is less specific about individual technical tracks than the QCon and KubeCon listings, so it does not support a more detailed comparison of session content. Other names in 2022 conference directories
BMC’s roundup search-result text also surfaced Oracle Developer Live, DeveloperWeek and UXDX. It described Oracle Developer Live through regional dates and DeveloperWeek as hybrid, but the page could not be inspected successfully and those details should be treated as directory claims rather than verified event logistics. The surfaced BMC passage said DeveloperWeek had “regular attendance of more than 8,000 professionals every year”; it did not specify the year for that figure, so it is not a reliable 2022 attendance measure. Quick Recap
What this shortlist can—and cannot—tell you
- Choose by technical fit: QCon and Strange Loop span engineering practices and multiple disciplines; RubyKaigi, DjangoCon EU and DrupalCon Europe serve language or framework communities; KubeCon + CloudNativeCon and re:Invent focus on cloud-related work.
- Check access separately from location: a city listing does not establish an online option. The 2022 descriptions explicitly identify virtual or online access for some events, but not all.
- Read format descriptions carefully: “online program,” “virtual edition” and “in person or virtually” do not necessarily mean the same attendance experience.
- Treat dates as historical: these listings document 2022 schedules, not current editions, ticket availability or present-day formats.
- Do not read this as a global ranking: the roundups are representative directories and announcements, not a transparent comparison of every conference or measured attendee outcomes.
