For a large ant colony, a slow-acting liquid bait in a refillable station is usually the best starting format. Workers can feed on it repeatedly, carry it back to the nest and share it with queens and brood. That colony-transfer mechanism is why bait can succeed where contact sprays merely kill the workers you can see. Gel is better for precise cracks and crevices, while granular bait is mainly an outdoor broadcast or bait-station option when the product label allows it.
No bait is universally best. Ant species, food acceptance, colony location, weather, placement and the product label determine the result. Use the comparison and procedure below to choose a format without disrupting the trail that must carry bait back to the nest.
How bait reaches a large colony
Ant bait works indirectly. A forager encounters an attractive, delayed-action food, eats it and returns to the nest. Nestmates consume material brought back by the forager, allowing the active ingredient to circulate through workers, larvae and queens. UC IPM describes the objective as having ants take the product back to the nest so the entire colony, including queens, can be killed.
Recommended Free Tools
The delay is essential. A product that kills or repels a worker immediately may prevent that worker from reaching the nest. Spraying an active trail, wiping it away or applying a fast-acting contact insecticide beside bait can therefore reduce control even when many ants die in the moment. Baiting requires leaving the trail usable long enough for repeated trips.

- 1 LIQUID ANT BAIT BOTTLE (1 YEAR SUPPLY) + 4 STATIONS (2 STACKED): The DEFIANT liquid ant bait system comes with 3.38 oz of liquid ant killer - roughly a 1 year supply for the average home, providing you with year round protection from a single purchase. It also includes 4 bait stations that can be put together to make 2 covered ant traps. The bait stations can be refilled and reused season after season for as long as you have ants in your home.
- KILLS THE QUEEN AND THE COLONY: DEFIANT Liquid Ant Bait kills the queen and colony of most common ants inside and outside your home, effectively eliminating ant infestations. Confirmed effective against: Acrobat, Crazy, Ghost, Sugar, Argentine, Odorous house, Pavement & Little Black Ants. NOT EFFECTIVE AGAINST: Carpenter, Fire & Pharoah ants.
- FAST-ACTING FORMULA: DEFIANT starts working immediately, though it does not kill ants instantly. The formula allows the worker ants time to carry the liquid ant bait back to their entire colony and share it with other members, including the queen. Noticeable ant activity reduction within days, colony elimination can take up to 3 weeks, depending on the severity of the infestation.
- READY TO USE: Simply set the discrete stations where ants are seen and pour a few drops of liquid ant killer inside the bait station. Its transparent design allows you to monitor ant activity and liquid bait levels daily. Refill bait stations and place again as many times as needed. Rinse with water when done.
- THE ONLY ANT CONTROL SYSTEM THAT ADAPTS TO YOUR HOME: DEFIANT is a premium ant control system, and offers different station options to suit all areas of your home, indoor and out. For the most effective results, set baited ant traps indoor and outdoors near areas with ant activity - along baseboards, corners, & kitchen counters, targeting ant hotspots throughout your home. Snap two stations together for use in high-traffic or dusty places.
Large colonies need sustained access rather than a single dab that dries after a few hours. That is why refillable liquid stations receive the strongest format-specific support for major infestations in the guidance reviewed here: they can hold a continuing supply for many foragers. Control still takes time, and ants must accept the formulation.
Gel, liquid and granular bait compared
| Format | Best-supported use | Strengths | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid | Ready-to-use or refillable stations, particularly for major infestations | Refillable stations can keep bait available to many foragers; borate liquids are widely used examples | May take several days; stations need inspection and refilling; acceptance varies by species and food preference |
| Gel | Spot placements in cracks, crevices and other precise locations; some gels can be used in refillable stations | Accurate application with little drift; useful where a station cannot fit | A few spots may not reach a widespread colony; species and placement must match the label |
| Granular | Outdoor broadcast or bait stakes where the label permits | Can cover larger outdoor areas and is simple to distribute | Rain and weather can reduce availability; species acceptance and legal application rates matter; not an automatic indoor solution |
These formats should not be ranked by speed alone. The practical questions are where ants are traveling, how long bait can remain available, whether the species accepts that food, whether the colony is reachable and what the label permits. No universal, independently dated success percentage establishes one format as the winner for every ant or property.
Liquid bait: the leading choice for a large infestation
Why refillable stations fit large colonies
A refillable station can present bait at several points along active trails and can be topped up as ants consume it. That matters when a colony has many foragers or several entry routes. Instead of relying on one small prefilled reservoir, you can maintain availability while observing how quickly ants are feeding.
UC IPM specifically discusses liquid borate bait in larger refillable stations as a way to reach more of the colony than small prepackaged stations. The guidance also warns that control can take several days, so an apparent lack of immediate knockdown is not, by itself, evidence of failure.
When liquid is a good match
- A large indoor trail has a stable placement beside a wall, pipe chase, window frame or other route.
- Outdoor foraging is concentrated at several predictable points where stations can be protected from weather and tampering.
- You can inspect the station and replenish it before it dries or runs out.
- The label identifies the ant, site and placement as permitted.
Examples and limitations
Named borate-liquid examples include TERRO Ant Killer II Liquid Ant Baits and Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait. They illustrate the format, not a universal endorsement. A liquid that works for one species may be ignored by another, and a station that is exposed to heat, rain, children or pets may be unsuitable regardless of its chemistry.
Gel bait: precise treatment for cracks and crevices
Where gel excels
Gel is useful when ants enter through narrow gaps or travel along a precise seam. Small placements can be made beside a trail, around a frame or in a crack where a liquid pool would be difficult to contain. The material stays where it is placed long enough for foragers to sample it, provided the surface is suitable and the label allows that location.

Spot gel treats the points you can reach. A large, dispersed or deeply subterranean colony may have more routes than the few spots you place. If ants stop visiting one dab, the colony may continue elsewhere. Gel therefore works best as a targeted component of a broader plan, not as an automatic substitute for a refillable liquid station in every major infestation.
Granular bait: an outdoor option with conditions
Broadcast and bait-station uses
Granular products can be distributed over outdoor areas or placed in bait stakes when the label permits those applications. This makes them convenient for yards, perimeter zones and other places where many foraging paths are spread across soil or vegetation. Granules can expose more of an outdoor area than a few indoor spots.
Weather and acceptance constraints
Moisture, irrigation and rain can move, dissolve or degrade granules. Apply only at the labeled rate and under the labeled weather and site conditions. Ant species may also reject a granule that does not match their current food preference. If workers ignore the granules, increasing the amount is not a reliable fix; reassess species, placement and formulation instead.
Granular bait is not an automatic indoor treatment. Indoor use, broadcast distance from buildings, protection of drains and restrictions around edible crops are product-specific questions controlled by the label.
Named granular examples
Amdro and Maxforce Complete are examples of granular products containing hydramethylnon. They are comparison examples only. Confirm the current label, formulation and permitted sites before purchase or application.

- Efficient and Neat: Whether indoors or outdoors, just set up the ant bait traps, add liquid ant bait (not included), and then watch how it attracts ants, and you can easily eliminate the entire ant colony
- Indoor and Outdoor Use: Set ant killer indoor around areas where ants are active, such as skirting boards, near walls, corners, kitchen counters, sinks and refrigerators. In addition, it provides long lasting ant killing power for homes, apartments, schools, hotels, hospitals, warehouses and other areas
Active ingredients and what they mean
| Active ingredient or group | Formats or examples identified in extension guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Boric acid or borate | Common in liquid baits; TERRO Ant Killer II Liquid Ant Baits and Gourmet Liquid Ant Bait are named examples | Delayed action supports transfer when ants accept the liquid; refillable stations can maintain supply |
| Fipronil | Listed by UC IPM among bait actives; appears in some gel and station formulations | Use only the species, rate and placement stated on the specific label |
| Avermectin or abamectin | Listed by UC IPM and USU Extension among bait actives or products | Formulation and legal site vary; do not infer permissions from the ingredient name alone |
| Hydramethylnon | Granular examples include Amdro and Maxforce Complete | Primarily considered for labeled outdoor applications; weather and species acceptance matter |
| Indoxacarb | Listed by USU Extension; an EPA indoxacarb gel label provides a concrete species example | The cited label lists covered species and excludes fire, harvester and Pharaoh ants |
An active ingredient is not a complete product description. Concentration, food base, formulation, station design and directions can change how ants encounter the bait. Read the current label for the exact package you have.
Choose by ant species, location and colony access
Argentine ants
Argentine ants commonly create broad, interconnected foraging networks rather than one obvious mound. For that pattern, place enough labeled bait points along active trails and entry routes to keep food available. A refillable liquid station can be advantageous when many workers are feeding over several days, but acceptance still has to be observed. Do not seal every crack or spray trails before bait has been carried back to the nest.
Carpenter ants
Carpenter ants may forage indoors while the nest is hidden in wood, wall voids or another inaccessible location. Bait can reduce foragers, but a remote nest, moisture-damaged timber or structural void may remain untreated. Use bait at active routes where the label permits, then investigate moisture and nesting locations if activity persists. Professional inspection is appropriate when the nest cannot be reached safely.
Fire, harvester and Pharaoh ants
Species names on a label are decisive. The EPA indoxacarb gel label cited in the guidance excludes fire, harvester and Pharaoh ants. Do not assume that a gel approved for another household ant is legal or effective for these species. Correct identification, the current label and local regulations come before application.
Indoor versus outdoor placement
Indoor spot treatment favors contained gel or a protected liquid station beside a trail. Outdoor broadcast treatment favors labeled granules or outdoor stations that tolerate the site. A product intended for one setting may be prohibited in the other, even when the active ingredient is similar.
Step-by-step procedure for a large colony
- Confirm active foraging. Watch ants for several minutes and trace the route to an entry point, food source or outdoor path. Place bait beside activity rather than in a random room or empty patch of soil.
- Identify the ant as far as practical. Size, color, nesting behavior and trail pattern can narrow the choice, but use an extension service or pest professional when identification affects the label. Record whether activity is indoors, outdoors or both.
- Select a permitted format. Start with liquid in a refillable station when a large colony has sustained trails and a protected placement. Choose gel for precise cracks and crevices. Choose granules only for labeled outdoor broadcast or bait-stake use.
- Read the entire current label. Verify covered species, indoor or outdoor site, application rate, station requirements, weather restrictions, re-entry directions and storage precautions. The label controls legal use.
- Place bait without disturbing the trail. Set stations beside active routes, not directly on top of a trail where they block traffic. Apply gel as small labeled spots in cracks or other permitted locations. Distribute granules at the labeled rate and keep them out of prohibited areas.
- Stop competing control methods. Do not spray, wipe, caulk or aggressively clean the baited route while ants are feeding. Remove accessible food spills and standing water nearby, but leave the route open for return trips.
- Protect the placement. Keep stations and gel away from children, pets, food-contact surfaces and areas where they can be washed away. Prevent irrigation or rain from moving outdoor granules unless the label specifically addresses those conditions.
- Inspect on a schedule. Check whether ants are feeding, whether liquid remains, whether gel has dried and whether granules have been displaced. Refill or replace only according to the label and the station instructions.
- Allow time for transfer. Continue monitoring over several days. Fewer ants at one point does not prove the nest is eliminated, and a brief increase can occur as workers discover the bait.
- Escalate when access is the problem. If activity remains widespread, enters inaccessible construction or involves a large outdoor network, obtain a licensed pest-management assessment rather than repeatedly increasing household bait.
How long bait takes to work
Expect a delay measured in days rather than minutes. Workers must feed, travel to the nest and share the bait before the colony declines. Liquid stations may need repeated refilling during that period. The exact duration depends on species, colony size, temperature, food competition, bait acceptance and how close the placement is to the nest.

- LONG-LASTING: Once placed, the bait continues to work for weeks, as long as ants continue to visit the stations. Complete control may take up to 2-4 weeks, depending on the infestation size
Useful early signs are sustained feeding at the bait, fewer active trails after several days and no new routes appearing. Signs of a poor match include ants walking around the bait, feeding only briefly and abandoning it, bait drying before they return, or activity continuing at untreated entry points.
Why baiting fails and how to correct it
Workers are killed before they return
Symptom: Dead ants appear immediately after treatment, but live trails continue elsewhere. Correction: Stop contact sprays and remove fast-acting products from the bait route. Restore a labeled, slow-acting bait placement.
The bait is in the wrong place
Symptom: Ants ignore bait in an open area while traveling along a wall, pipe or vegetation. Correction: Move or add stations beside active trails and entry points, without blocking traffic.
The formulation is not accepted
Symptom: Ants pass the bait without feeding. Correction: Recheck species and food preference, then use a different labeled formulation or active ingredient. Do not mix products in one station unless the label explicitly permits it.
The supply disappears too quickly
Symptom: A small reservoir is empty soon after placement. Correction: Use a larger refillable station where permitted, add enough labeled stations to cover the active routes and inspect them regularly.
Weather removes outdoor bait
Symptom: Granules are wet, washed away or no longer present. Correction: Follow the product’s weather directions, protect stations as allowed and reapply only at the labeled rate and interval.

Safety and legal requirements
The product label is the legal instruction for species, placement, rate, protective equipment, storage and disposal. Keep the original container and never transfer bait to a food container. Wash hands after handling, prevent contact with eyes and skin, and keep children and pets away from stations and treated areas as directed.
Use only stations designed for the bait and site. Do not place loose gel where it can be touched or tracked onto food surfaces. Outdoor granules require particular care around play areas, drains, edible plants, ponds and neighboring property; the label determines the permitted setbacks and precautions.

If exposure occurs, follow the first-aid directions on the label and contact the appropriate poison-control or medical service. Product-specific emergency information takes priority over generic internet advice.
When a professional is the better option
Household bait is reasonable for a localized trail with safe, visible access. Professional pest management becomes more appropriate when the colony is widespread, deeply subterranean, inside structural voids, repeatedly returns after correctly labeled baiting, or cannot be treated without exposing people, pets or the environment.
A professional can identify the species, map multiple nests, select products legal for that species and location, and address moisture or structural conditions that sustain carpenter-ant activity. Ask for the product name, active ingredient, target species, placement plan, re-entry instructions and follow-up schedule.
A practical decision framework
| Your situation | Starting format | Reason to choose it | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Many workers on stable indoor trails | Liquid in a protected refillable station | Maintains food availability for repeated trips | Refill needs, children or pets, label permissions |
| Ants emerging from a narrow crack or seam | Labeled gel spot | Precise placement with minimal spread | More routes may require additional stations or professional treatment |
| Large outdoor area with dispersed trails | Labeled granular bait or outdoor station | Covers more ground than a few indoor spots | Rain, irrigation, species acceptance and broadcast restrictions |
| Species is uncertain or excluded by the label | Pause and identify before treating | Avoids illegal or ineffective application | Fire, harvester and Pharaoh-ant exclusions on some gel labels |
| Nest is inside inaccessible construction or activity is widespread | Professional assessment | Finds and treats the source safely | Repeated DIY applications can spread activity or increase exposure |
Bottom line
For a large colony, begin with a slow-acting liquid bait in a refillable station when the species and site are covered by the label. Use gel for precise cracks and crevices, and reserve granular bait for labeled outdoor applications. Keep trails undisturbed, replenish bait while ants are feeding, allow several days for transfer and escalate to professional treatment when the nest is inaccessible or the infestation is widespread.
