Set a strong screen lock before relying on Android’s theft protection. Use a six-digit-or-longer PIN, a complicated pattern, or a unique password. Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Remote Lock and related safeguards can be present on a compatible phone, but the authentication foundation is still the lock screen. Google’s current Android Help specifically requires a screen lock for Remote Lock and warns that biometrics do not replace a strong fallback credential.
After setting that credential, enable the protections in Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection, verify your number for Remote Lock, and confirm that Find Hub is active before the phone goes missing.
Why the screen lock is the critical first step
A phone can show several anti-theft options while remaining poorly protected if no secure screen lock is configured. The lock screen is the credential Android uses to authenticate access and to authorize recovery controls. Remote Lock will not work without one, and Google’s guidance describes a strong password, PIN or pattern as necessary even when fingerprint or face biometrics are enabled.

Choose one of these fallbacks:
- PIN: at least six digits, with a sequence that is not easy to guess.
- Pattern: a complicated pattern rather than a short, familiar shape.
- Password: a unique password that is not reused on another account.
Biometrics make everyday unlocking faster, but they do not replace the fallback credential. Android may request the PIN, pattern or password after a restart, after certain security events, or when a sensitive setting needs confirmation.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
How Android’s theft protections fit together
The controls are easier to understand when grouped by what starts them and what they do. Some react automatically before you can reach the phone; others are commands you send after it is gone; a third group protects accounts and sensitive settings from changes.
| Protection | What starts it | Result | Important prerequisite or scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theft Detection Lock | On-device AI evaluates motion and context associated with a snatch-and-run. | Automatically locks the screen. | Available on supported devices; introduced for Android 10 and newer through Google Play services updates. |
| Offline Device Lock | Prolonged loss of connectivity. | Automatically locks the screen. | The phone must be unlocked when connectivity is lost for this trigger to activate; supported rollout began with Android 10 and newer. |
| Failed Authentication Lock | Repeated failed authentication attempts. | Locks the device after the configured failure condition. | Availability varies; stronger controls are included with Android 16 and newer. |
| Remote Lock | Your command from the remote-lock service. | Locks the screen remotely. | Requires a screen lock, active SIM, verified phone number and internet access. If offline when requested, it locks after reconnecting. Google documents a limit of two remote locks in 24 hours. |
| Find Hub | Your owner action after loss. | Can locate, lock, mark as lost or erase the device. | Power and connectivity are needed for location or commands. Adding a Google Account turns it on automatically, but you should still verify it before loss. |
| Identity Check | A sensitive action attempted outside a trusted place. | Requests biometric verification for selected security changes. | Requires enrolled biometrics and trusted places; expanded protections are available on Android 16 and newer where supported. |
Android also groups other hardening measures under the theft-protection area, including protected sensitive settings, Private Space and factory-reset protection. Their exact availability and prompts depend on the device and Android version.
Turn on the protections before your phone disappears
- Create the screen lock. Open your phone’s security or lock-screen settings and choose a six-or-more-digit PIN, complicated pattern or unique password. Enroll biometrics only after the fallback is set.
- Open the theft-protection controls. Go to Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection. If the menu is missing, update Android and Google Play services, then check the device’s Android version and regional availability.
- Enable Theft Detection Lock. Turn on the option that uses on-device AI and motion/context signals. It is designed to lock the display when the phone appears to have been snatched and carried away.
- Enable Offline Device Lock. This covers a prolonged loss of connectivity. The Android.com explanation notes that the phone must be unlocked at the moment connectivity is lost for this particular trigger to activate.
- Enable Failed Authentication Lock. Turn it on when the option appears on your model. The control is not exposed on every device, and the stronger version is part of Android 16 and newer availability.
- Configure Remote Lock. Open Remote Lock, enter or confirm the phone number, and complete verification. Keep the SIM active. Remote Lock also depends on the screen lock and an internet connection.
- Check Find Hub. Confirm that the device appears in Find Hub and that its location, lock and erase actions are available. A Google Account normally enables Find Hub automatically, but a pre-loss check catches account, permission or connectivity problems while you can still fix them.
- Set up Identity Check where offered. Add biometrics and designate trusted places. Outside those places, Identity Check can require biometrics before changing the screen lock, factory-resetting, turning off Find Hub, disabling theft protection, changing Google Account recovery factors and performing other protected actions.
What each automatic lock can and cannot do
Theft Detection Lock
This is the first-response feature for a physical grab. The phone analyzes movement and surrounding context on the device and locks when the pattern resembles a snatch-and-run. Because the decision is made from signals rather than an owner command, it can act while the phone is out of your hands. It is not a promise that every theft will be detected; Google has not published an effectiveness percentage.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Offline Device Lock
A thief may try to cut connectivity so you cannot reach the phone. Offline Device Lock responds to a prolonged loss of connection by locking the device. The important timing detail is easy to miss: the phone has to be unlocked when connectivity is lost for the trigger to work. It therefore complements, rather than replaces, a strong screen lock.
Failed Authentication Lock
This protection addresses repeated unsuccessful attempts to authenticate. Enable it if your phone exposes the setting. Google’s January 27, 2026 update describes stronger failed-authentication controls on Android 16 and newer, so the wording and behavior can differ by version.

- Try Remote Lock first. Submit the lock request with the verified phone number. If the device is online, the lock can occur promptly; if it is offline, the request waits until the phone reconnects.
- Open Find Hub. Use the device entry to locate it when a current location is available, lock it or mark it lost, and erase it only when recovery is no longer realistic and protecting the data is the priority.
- Do not assume a pending request failed. A phone without power or connectivity cannot report a location or receive a command until those conditions return.
- Use the documented Remote Lock allowance carefully. Google’s Android Help says Remote Lock can be used twice in a 24-hour period, so avoid repeated submissions while waiting for an offline phone to reconnect.
Google Vice President Suzanne Frey described Remote Lock as a “lifeline if your phone is already gone.” That describes its role: it is a recovery command after loss, not a substitute for setting the lock screen and automatic protections beforehand.

Remote Lock has several dependencies. Check them in this order:
- No screen lock: create the PIN, pattern or password first. Biometrics alone do not satisfy the requirement.
- Number not verified: return to Remote Lock and complete phone-number verification.
- Inactive SIM: Remote Lock requires an active SIM, so a removed, disabled or otherwise inactive SIM can prevent setup.
- No internet: the command needs connectivity to reach the phone. An offline device can still apply a previously sent request after reconnecting.
- Find Hub not ready: check the Google Account on the phone and confirm the device is listed before loss.
- Unsupported software or device: the initial rollout covered Android 10 and newer through Google Play services, while some newer controls require Android 15 or Android 16. Update the phone and Google Play services, then check the manufacturer’s availability for that model.
- Request limit reached: Remote Lock is documented as available twice in a 24-hour period. Wait for the allowance to reset rather than repeatedly submitting commands.
Find Hub: the pre-loss check that saves time
Find Hub can locate, lock, mark lost or erase a device, but those actions depend on the phone having power and a connection. The automatic Google Account enrollment does not guarantee that every setting is usable at the moment of theft; account sign-in, permissions, battery state and network access still determine what you can see and command.

Verify the device while it is in your possession. Confirm that the correct phone appears, that its recent location can be displayed, and that the lock and erase controls are available. This is also the point to make sure you can sign in to the Google Account from another device, since account recovery delays are especially difficult after the phone has vanished.
Identity Check and protection of sensitive settings
Screen locking stops ordinary access, while Identity Check is aimed at an attacker who already knows or obtains the device credential. When configured with biometrics and trusted places, it can require a biometric prompt outside those places before high-impact actions such as changing the lock, factory-resetting the phone, turning off Find Hub, disabling theft protection or changing Google Account recovery factors.
Identity Check is not a replacement for the PIN, pattern or password. It adds a location-aware biometric gate to selected changes. The expanded set of protections is associated with Android 16 and newer, and the exact menu can vary by device.

Availability by Android version
| Date or version | What Google says |
|---|---|
| May 15, 2024 announcement | Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock and Remote Lock were announced for Android 10 and newer through Google Play services updates; some additional protections arrived with Android 15. |
| Android 15 and newer | Several newer theft protections became available with Android 15, depending on the device. |
| January 27, 2026 update | Google described stronger failed-authentication controls and expanded Identity Check for Android 16 and newer, while Remote Lock enhancements apply to Android 10 and newer. |
These version statements describe Google’s rollout, not a guarantee that every model, carrier or region exposes every switch. Manufacturer software, Google Play services updates and local availability can change the menu.
Use the right control for the situation
- You have just been grabbed or the phone is being carried away: Theft Detection Lock is the automatic response to try first, with the screen lock as the underlying credential.
- The phone has gone offline: Offline Device Lock covers a prolonged connectivity loss, subject to its unlocked-at-disconnection condition.
- Someone is guessing the credential: Failed Authentication Lock adds a response to repeated failures where supported.
- You are already away from the phone: Remote Lock sends an owner command using the verified number, while Find Hub provides location, lock, mark-lost and erase actions.
- You fear account or security-setting changes: Identity Check, protected settings, Private Space and factory-reset protection add barriers around sensitive operations.
Limits and realistic expectations
Android’s theft protections reduce exposure; they do not guarantee recovery or publish a success rate. Google’s official material provides availability and operating limits rather than an effectiveness statistic. The concrete limits are important: Remote Lock requires the prerequisite setup, a remote request may wait for reconnection, Find Hub needs power and connectivity for location or commands, and Remote Lock is documented as usable twice in 24 hours.
The practical order is therefore straightforward: establish the strong fallback credential, turn on automatic protections, verify Remote Lock and Find Hub, then add Identity Check if the device supports it. Doing those steps while the phone is still with you is what turns the feature list into usable protection.
