The anniversary was marked in 2025. Anglepoise later introduced the Type 80 in 2019, but the available evidence does not establish that it is objectively better—or that a new improvement has just arrived.
Which lamp turned 90?
It is the Anglepoise Original 1227, a desk lamp with the spring-balanced arm now closely associated with the brand. Anglepoise calls the 1227 its archetypal design. Fuorisalone described the 2025 milestone as 90 years since the Original 1227 launched, making the anniversary about the 1935 lamp—not the earlier development of its mechanism.

How did the Anglepoise develop?
The familiar design emerged in stages. Anglepoise credits automotive engineer George Carwardine with developing the spring mechanism, then traces the early lamps through separate models and dates:

That timeline explains why “90 years old” needs a date attached: the spring-mechanism story starts in 1932, while the 1227’s launch—and its 90th anniversary—was in 1935 and 2025, respectively.
Has anyone improved on the original?
“Nobody improved on it” is a matter of opinion, not a conclusion established by the sources. Anglepoise presents the Type 80 as an all-new Kenneth Grange design, but it was introduced in 2019; its existence does not support the idea that a new model has just improved the 1227.

Nor do the available sources provide side-by-side tests of the Original 1227 and Type 80 for light quality, ergonomics, durability, stability, or overall performance. They establish two designs and their dates, not a winner. Anyone choosing between them would need model-specific information about reach, adjustment, light source and controls, mounting, materials, repair support, and current price.
