Short answer: Google Alerts is the best free starting point, Awario and Mentionlytics are the budget choices, Brand24 is the strongest general-purpose option for many small and midsize teams, Semrush suits SEO-led organizations, and Brandwatch, Talkwalker/Lumen, and Meltwater are built for enterprise intelligence. The right choice depends on where people discuss your company: indexed websites and news, social networks, forums, podcasts, broadcast media, or visual channels.
This comparison uses capabilities and pricing published in 2026 comparison material and vendor guides. Prices, packages, source indexes, and branding can change, so confirm the current offer before purchasing.
Quick picks by use case
- Free baseline: Google Alerts for simple keyword notifications from Google’s indexed web.
- Lowest-cost paid monitoring: Awario, reported from about $29 per month, or Mentionlytics, reported from about $49 per month on annual billing.
- Broad SMB listening: Brand24 for real-time social and media monitoring with sentiment, alerts, reports, and API capabilities.
- SEO and AI-visibility workflows: Semrush when your team already works in the Semrush suite.
- Enterprise consumer intelligence: Brandwatch, Talkwalker/Lumen, or Meltwater when you need advanced analytics, broad media coverage, and sales-supported procurement.
Do not select a platform solely by its mention count. A service that indexes news but misses Reddit, podcasts, or image-based logos can produce a clean-looking report that omits the conversations that matter most.

What brand monitoring covers
“Brand monitoring” can mean several different jobs. An indexed-web alert looks for text on pages that a search engine has crawled. Social listening searches public posts and, depending on the vendor and network, comments or historical data. Media intelligence adds online news, print, television, and radio. More advanced systems analyze sentiment, themes, logos, faces, or spoken words in video and audio.

Before comparing vendors, list the places where your customers and critics actually talk:
- Web and news: blogs, publications, review sites, and press coverage.
- Social networks: public posts, comments, and creator content.
- Communities: forums, Reddit-like discussion boards, and specialist groups.
- Audio and broadcast: podcasts, television, and radio transcripts or detections.
- Visual mentions: logos, products, packaging, or screenshots that contain no readable brand name.
Coverage is never identical across vendors. Network licensing, geography, language, privacy rules, indexing delays, and whether a source is public all affect what can be collected.

The price figures above are directional 2026 reports, not guaranteed offers. EyeOut’s 2026 comparison places readable list-priced monitoring products at roughly EUR 29 to $499 per month. Currency, annual discounts, limits, and add-ons can materially change the total.
Tool-by-tool analysis
Google Alerts: the free baseline
Google Alerts remains useful when the requirement is simply “tell me when Google finds this phrase.” Create separate alerts for your exact brand name, common misspellings, product names, executive names, and high-risk phrases. It delivers batched digests from indexed web results and costs nothing.
Its limitation is structural: it is not a social-listening or analytics system. It has no native sentiment analysis, dependable historical archive, broad collaboration workspace, or stated API. Use it as a safety net, not as evidence that no one is discussing you.
Awario: budget web and social monitoring
Awario is positioned for small brands that need web and social monitoring without an enterprise contract. 2026 comparison guides report a starting point of about $29 per month. It is a sensible first paid step when Google Alerts is too narrow but a large analytics suite would be excessive.
Ask for a source-by-source coverage list, language support, historical lookback, alert latency, and export limits before subscribing. The cited material does not establish enterprise-grade visual recognition, broadcast coverage, or a specific API allowance.

Mentionlytics: lower-cost monitoring for small operators
Mentionlytics is reported at about $49 per month when billed annually and is aimed at freelancers and small businesses. It can fit an agency that needs several client keywords and basic reporting while keeping recurring spend predictable.
Annual pricing is a qualification, not a universal monthly rate. Confirm cancellation terms, the number of projects and seats, and whether the social networks important to your clients are included in the current plan.
BrandMentions: transparent SMB list pricing
BrandMentions provides paid mention monitoring with transparent list pricing in its SMB tier. That transparency makes it easier to compare an initial budget than quote-only enterprise products.
Do not infer coverage breadth from the name alone. Validate the exact websites, networks, countries, languages, archive depth, and export or API rights you need. The available comparison material does not specify a single universal price or a complete visual and audio feature set.
Brand24: broad SMB social listening
Brand24 is the most balanced choice when a small or midsize team wants social and media monitoring, alerts, sentiment, reports, and API capabilities in one product. A 2026 Brand24 guide reports a starting point around $199 per month, although packaging is subject to change.
Its value is strongest when you will act on the analysis: route negative sentiment to support, identify recurring topics, and give marketing a report that can be reproduced. Confirm the current source list and historical window, because “real time” does not mean every network arrives instantly.
Semrush: best for SEO-led brand visibility
Semrush makes sense for teams already paying for SEO research and wanting brand and AI-visibility monitoring in the same suite. One 2026 comparison reports an entry tier around $139 per month, while another cites about $199; treat both as directional package references rather than a firm quote.

Semrush is not a substitute for a dedicated social, podcast, television, or radio listening system. Choose it when search visibility, branded queries, and AI answer presence are central success measures.

Brandwatch: enterprise consumer intelligence
Brandwatch targets organizations that need advanced analytics and research rather than a simple stream of mentions. Pricing is custom and normally requires a sales conversation. It is appropriate when multiple departments need governed workspaces, complex segmentation, and strategic consumer intelligence.
During procurement, require a written source matrix for each country and language, retention period, user role, export format, API limits, and the definition of any sentiment or topic model. Enterprise breadth is valuable only when the data can be accessed and audited by your team.
Talkwalker/Lumen: visual and audio-aware enterprise listening
Talkwalker/Lumen is positioned as enterprise social listening with visual and audio capabilities and custom pricing. Verify the current branding, contract entity, supported channels, and whether visual or audio recognition is included in the proposed package.
This is the short-list candidate when a logo may appear without a text mention or when spoken references matter. Ask for examples from your market, because recognition quality and source availability can vary by language and medium.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMeltwater: quote-based media intelligence
Meltwater focuses on enterprise media monitoring and intelligence. Procurement is quote-based, so the useful comparison is not a public sticker price but the full proposal: monitored sources, users, dashboards, archive, exports, integrations, onboarding, and renewal terms.
It fits communications and larger organizations that need structured media workflows. Smaller teams should first establish that they truly require enterprise media breadth before accepting the added procurement overhead.

How to choose without overbuying
1. Map sources to business risk
Write down the channels that can trigger an action. A product-recall team may need news, forums, and broadcast; a direct-to-consumer brand may prioritize social comments and creators; an SEO team may need branded search and AI answers. Eliminate tools that cannot reach the critical sources, even if their dashboards look polished.
2. Define “fast enough” alerts
For crisis response, ask for measured or contractually described latency by source. For monthly reputation reporting, daily or batched delivery may be sufficient. “Real time” is a positioning term unless the vendor explains ingestion, processing, and notification delays.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Test sentiment and AI on your language
Sentiment models struggle with sarcasm, slang, mixed languages, and industry terms. Supply a small labeled sample of positive, neutral, and negative mentions and compare the vendor’s output with your own labels. Treat AI themes as decision support, not unquestionable truth.
4. Check history before signing
If you need to measure a launch against the previous year, a tool with only recent data will not recreate the baseline. Ask how far back each source goes, whether historical data is included at the quoted price, and whether deleted or private posts are excluded.
5. Price the workflow, not just the seat
Include additional users, projects, monitored keywords, data exports, API calls, onboarding, archive extensions, and annual commitments. A low monthly entry tier can become expensive when every client or region requires an add-on.
6. Verify governance
Document who can create alerts, change query logic, export personal data, and publish a crisis report. Ask about retention, access controls, audit logs, and regional processing requirements if your legal or security team needs them.
A practical monitoring setup
- Create a controlled keyword set. Start with the exact brand, misspellings, product names, executive names, campaign tags, and competitor comparisons. Add exclusion terms that create obvious noise.
- Separate alerts by intent. Keep customer support, press, competitor, crisis, and campaign queries in different streams so a spike in one category is visible.
- Set an escalation rule. For example, route a high-reach negative article or repeated safety complaint to a named owner within a defined time. The exact threshold should reflect your risk tolerance, not a vendor default.
- Review false positives weekly. Record irrelevant terms and refine the query. Overly broad searches inflate volume and hide important mentions.
- Report trends with context. Pair mention volume with reach, source mix, sentiment sample quality, and the events that explain a spike. Never present a raw count as reputation by itself.
- Audit coverage quarterly. Networks change access policies and audiences migrate. Recheck that the tool still sees the sources your customers use.
Common failure modes and fixes
Alerts are silent
Check spelling variants, language and country filters, source permissions, and whether the phrase appears in an indexed or public source. Run a known recent URL or post through the vendor’s coverage checker if available. Google Alerts, in particular, only reports what Google has indexed.

There are too many irrelevant mentions
Add exact-match phrases, excluded words, competitor qualifiers, and separate queries for each product. Do not solve noise by raising the alert threshold until you have confirmed that important low-volume mentions are not being discarded.
Sentiment looks wrong
Inspect the underlying posts, label a sample yourself, and ask whether sarcasm, quoted speech, or mixed-language text is driving the error. Use manual review for crisis decisions and treat model scores as directional.
The dashboard shows a spike that cannot be explained
Check source mix, duplicate syndication, bot activity, a newly indexed archive, and query changes. Compare the spike with a second source before announcing a reputation event.
The bill is higher than expected
Review monitored keywords, projects, seats, API calls, historical-data purchases, and annual-versus-monthly billing. Request a written renewal price and overage policy before expanding coverage.
Or skip the browser setup
Brand monitoring tools tell you where a mention appears; sometimes you also need a clean, repeatable screenshot of the public page for a report, ticket, or evidence bundle. ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first for that capture job because it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot, bills only clean captures, and exposes the page verdict in the response. It is not a brand-monitoring database, so use it alongside—not instead of—a listening platform.
One request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options.

For automation, ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two monitoring tools at the same time?
Yes. A common pattern is Google Alerts for a free indexed-web safety net plus one paid platform for social, sentiment, reporting, or API workflows. Deduplicate notifications and assign one system as the reporting source of record.
Should a small company buy an enterprise platform immediately?
Usually not. First document the sources, response times, history, and collaboration controls you actually need. Move to an enterprise quote when those requirements exceed the coverage, governance, or export limits of an SMB product.
How should I compare vendor trials?
Give each vendor the same keyword set, countries, languages, date range, and labeled sample of known mentions. Compare missed sources, false positives, alert delay, export quality, and the effort required to produce one useful report.
