Running headphones have a harder job than ordinary wireless earbuds. They must stay in place through repeated impact, tolerate sweat and rain, provide enough battery for long sessions, and—depending on where you run—leave you aware of traffic and other people.
This list preserves the six-product version of RTINGS’ 2026 running roundup, including the Shokz OpenRun. There is an important update: on August 3, 2026, RTINGS moved the OpenRun from its main recommendations to Notable Mentions, leaving five primary picks on the live page. The OpenRun is still included here because it was the sixth recommendation in the version published on July 9.
Quick comparison
| Headphones | Best for | Ingress rating | Rated playback | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 | Best overall | IPX4 | Not specified in the supplied test summary | Less sound customization than some rivals |
| JBL Endurance Peak 4 | Best mid-range option | IP68 | Nearly 10 hours per charge | ANC is much weaker than the Beats’ |
| Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless | Best budget option | IP55 | About 9.5 hours per charge | Questionable hook-to-earbud attachment point |
| JLab Audio GO Sport+ | Best cheap option | IP55 | About 7.5 hours per charge | Integrated USB-C cable can make the case unusable if damaged |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds | Best open-ear option | IPX4 | About 9.5 hours | Limited low bass and high price |
| Shokz OpenRun | Best bone-conduction option | IP67 | About 13 hours | Some listeners dislike the vibrating-transducer sensation |
IP ratings are not interchangeable with the word “waterproof.” They describe tested resistance to dust or water under particular conditions; they do not automatically make headphones suitable for swimming or showering.
1. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: best running headphones
The Powerbeats Pro 2 are the strongest all-round choice for runners who want conventional sealed earbuds with a secure fit. Their over-ear hooks help prevent the earbuds from bouncing loose, while the silicone coating helps reduce slipping as you sweat.

- Clear Calls with 4 Mics and AI Enhancement: Equipped with four mics and an AI algorithm, V20i open-ear Bluetooth earbuds ensure crisp and clear calls wherever you are.
They have an IPX4 water-resistance rating and built-in heart-rate sensors, which separates them from the other conventional in-ear choices here. Apple users also benefit from the H2 chip and tighter integration with Apple devices. The sound is broadly balanced with a slight bass emphasis, making it suitable for podcasts, pop, and workout playlists.
The trade-off is customization. RTINGS notes that the Beats offer less sound adjustment than some competing models. They are also not an open design, so they provide less awareness of traffic and nearby runners than the Bose or Shokz options.
2. JBL Endurance Peak 4: best mid-range running headphones
The JBL Endurance Peak 4 are a practical choice when durability and battery life matter more than premium noise cancellation. Their ear hooks provide a stable fit, and the IP68 rating gives them the strongest dust-and-water protection among the conventional in-ear picks in this list.
Each charge lasts nearly 10 hours in RTINGS’ testing, and the charging case supplies approximately three additional charges. That is enough for repeated training sessions without frequent recharging.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThese earbuds have ANC, but it is substantially weaker than the Powerbeats Pro 2’s. Their default tuning is also bass-heavy; some pop tracks can sound muddy until you reduce the low end with the app’s graphic EQ. The JBLs do not include a heart-rate sensor, so they should not be treated as a biometric workout headset.
3. Skullcandy Push Active True Wireless: best budget running headphones
The Push Active delivers the basic features most runners need at a lower price: ear hooks for stability, an IP55 dust-and-water-resistance rating, and long battery life. The earbuds last approximately 9.5 hours per charge, with the case providing about 3.4 additional charges.
There is no active noise cancellation. Instead, the ear tips provide passive isolation. That can reduce some background noise, but it also means you should be cautious when running near roads or in other environments where hearing your surroundings matters.

- 80H Playtime with Dual LED Display Charging Case: Enjoy uninterrupted music with an ultra-long 80-hour battery life powered by the portable charging case. The digital display on the left clearly shows the remaining case power, while the right LED indicators display the earbuds’ charging status. Each earbud offers up to 8 hours of playtime per charge, and when used alternately with the charging case, total usage extends to an impressive 80 hours, perfect for travel, work, and extended workouts.
- Immersive Stereo Sound & Clear Calls with Dual Mics: Built with advanced 10mm dynamic drivers and dual microphones, these wireless earbuds deliver crisp treble, rich bass, and stunning clarity across your music, movies, and games. The microphones are designed to capture your voice precisely, reducing surrounding noise and ensuring your conversations remain clear whether you’re outdoors, in transit, or on video calls, giving you a consistently enjoyable listening and communication experience.
- Seamless Bluetooth Connectivity & Dual Button Controls: Featuring advanced Bluetooth technology, earbuds ensure quicker pairing, stable connections, and lower latency across multiple devices. Once removed from the case, they reconnect automatically to your last paired device for seamless use. With separate main and volume buttons, you gain direct and intuitive control over music, calls, and adjustments—avoiding the frustration of complicated touch gestures or accidental taps during workouts.
- All-Day Fit & Wide Device Compatibility: Designed with adjustable ear hooks that follow ergonomic principles, these bluetooth earbuds adapt naturally to different ear shapes and sizes, ensuring they stay firmly in place during running, cycling, or intense workouts. The secure fit minimizes slippage and maximizes comfort, while universal Bluetooth compatibility allows these ear buds to seamlessly pair with smartphones, tablets, and laptops, providing a smooth audio experience across all devices.
- Designed for Active Lifestyles & Portability: Compact charging case easily fits into your pocket or bag for travel and daily carry, reducing the risk of losing your earbuds. With a sweat-resistant and dust-resistant build, they are prepared to support your workouts, outdoor runs, or busy commutes without slowing you down. Durable, secure, and convenient, these bluetooth headphones are an excellent companion for people who need reliable audio that keeps pace with their active routine.
The default sound is bass-heavy, although the companion app provides EQ adjustment. The main concern is durability at the attachment point between the ear hooks and the earbud bodies. It is a sensible budget pick, but the design is not as reassuringly robust as the price and fit might suggest.

The GO Sport+ are the inexpensive choice for runners who prioritize a secure fit over advanced features. Their integrated hooks hold the earbuds firmly, and the IP55 rating provides protection against dust and water jets under the conditions covered by that rating.
Battery life is approximately 7.5 hours per charge, with around 1.9 extra charges from the case. There is no ANC, so these use passive ear-tip isolation instead.
The case has an integrated USB-C charging cable. That keeps one separate cable out of your running bag, but it creates a serious failure mode: if the built-in cable is damaged, you cannot simply replace it with another cable and may be unable to recharge the case and earbuds. The sound is bass-heavy by default, though EQ and presets can make it more balanced.
5. Bose Ultra Open Earbuds: best open running earbuds
The Bose Ultra Open Earbuds are for runners who want music without blocking their ear canals. They clip onto the lower part of the ears and use traditional air-conduction drivers rather than bone conduction. Because the canals remain unobstructed, you can hear more of the environment while listening.
They are stable, offer approximately 9.5 hours of continuous playback, and are a better fit than sealed earbuds for road running or group workouts where environmental awareness is important. The major audio compromise is limited low-bass response, so they do not produce the same punch as the Powerbeats, JBL, or Skullcandy models.
They carry an IPX4 rating and cost more than alternatives such as the Anker Soundcore C30i. Also remember that open-ear does not mean silent to everyone nearby: sound can leak, particularly at high volume.

- JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
- Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
- Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
- Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
6. Shokz OpenRun: best bone-conduction headphones
The Shokz OpenRun leaves the ears open and sends audio through vibrations conducted through the skull. That makes it appealing for runners who dislike having ear tips in their canals or who want maximum awareness of nearby sounds.
The OpenRun has an IP67 rating and approximately 13 hours of battery life. It is available in standard and mini sizes, and a USB-C version exists alongside versions that use a proprietary connector. RTINGS selected the standard OpenRun over the OpenRun Pro 2 in the earlier roundup because it cost less and had a higher IP rating.

Some listeners dislike the sensation produced by the vibrating transducers, and the design cannot match sealed earbuds for bass or isolation. The OpenRun is also no longer one of the five primary recommendations on RTINGS’ live page as of August 3, 2026; it now appears under Notable Mentions. It remains a valid choice if open ears and long battery life are more important to you than full-range sound.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose running headphones
Choose the fit before the sound profile
Ear hooks or integrated clips are generally more reliable than ordinary stem-style earbuds during running. A secure fit prevents the constant adjustment that can be more disruptive than a small difference in audio quality. Try the smallest ear tip that seals comfortably, then test the fit with head movement before taking the headphones outdoors.
Decide whether you need isolation
Sealed earbuds reduce outside noise and usually deliver stronger bass, but they can make it harder to hear traffic. Open-ear and bone-conduction models preserve more environmental sound while sacrificing isolation and low-end impact. Neither design makes listening automatically safe at any volume, so keep playback moderate and remain attentive to your surroundings.
Match the IP rating to your routine
For ordinary sweat and light rain, IPX4 may be sufficient. Higher ratings offer more tested resistance, but the exact meaning matters: IP55 and IP68 include dust protection, while the “X” in IPX4 indicates that dust protection was not specified in that rating. Avoid assuming any of these products can be submerged or used in a shower unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
Check the charging arrangement
For daily runners, the case capacity can matter more than the earbuds’ single-charge figure. The JBL and Skullcandy options provide roughly three extra charges, while the JLab provides fewer. With the GO Sport+, inspect the integrated cable regularly because its failure affects the whole charging system.

- Touch-Controlled Freedom: Play, pause, skip tracks, tweak volume, or launch Siri and Google Assistant—all with simple tap gestures on the earbuds. Perfect for keeping your phone in your pocket while you stay focused on what matters.
- Fast Battery & Speed Charging: Enjoy 6 hours of uninterrupted listening on a single charge, extended to 54 hours with the included charging case. The case charges fully via Type-C in 1.5 hours, and when you're in a rush, just 10 minutes plugged in grants 2 hours of playback. A precise LED percentage indicator on the case removes all guesswork from your power levels.
- Instant-On Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.4 and dual-channel transmission mean these earbuds power up and pair automatically the second you open the case. Broad protocol support (HSP, HFP, A2DP, AVRCP) ensures flawless integration with iPhone, Android, and Windows devices, maintaining a stable connection up to 15m in clear conditions.
- Immersive Audio & Crystal Calls: True wireless stereo sound brings your music and podcasts to life with striking clarity. Meanwhile, the built-in noise-cancelling microphone filters out ambient racket so your voice comes through loud and clear on every call.
- Built for Movement: At just 7g per earbud, the soft, flexible earhook design delivers a barely-there feel that stays secure during runs, rides, and gym sessions. Three pairs of silicone ear tips (S/M/L) provide a tailored fit, and IPX7 waterproofing handles heavy sweat and rain with ease. Not intended for underwater use.
Which one should you buy?
- Buy the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 if you want the best combination of secure fit, sound, Apple integration, and heart-rate sensing.
- Buy the JBL Endurance Peak 4 if durability and battery life are more important than high-quality ANC.
- Buy the Skullcandy Push Active if you want a capable hooked design at a budget price and can accept the build-quality concern.
- Buy the JLab GO Sport+ if the lowest cost matters most, while accepting the integrated-cable risk.
- Buy the Bose Ultra Open if hearing your surroundings is the priority and you can afford the premium.
- Buy the Shokz OpenRun if you specifically want bone conduction, open ears, and roughly 13 hours of battery life.
FAQ
Are over-ear headphones good for running?
Usually not. Full-size over-ear headphones can be less stable during repeated movement and may trap sweat. Earbuds, open-ear clips, and bone-conduction headsets are generally better suited to running.
Are open-ear headphones safer for running?
They can make it easier to hear traffic and other environmental sounds because they leave the ear canals unobstructed or reduce isolation. They are not automatically safe at high volume, however, and they can still leak sound to people nearby.
Can I use IPX4 headphones in the rain?
IPX4 indicates tested resistance to water splashes from various directions. It may be suitable for sweat and light rain, but it does not mean the headphones are waterproof or designed for submersion, swimming, or showering.

Why is the Shokz OpenRun included if RTINGS now lists five products?
The OpenRun was the sixth primary recommendation in RTINGS’ July 9, 2026 version of the roundup. On August 3, RTINGS moved it to Notable Mentions, so the current live page has five main picks. It is included here to preserve the six-product version covered by this article’s title.
The Bottom Line
The Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are the best general recommendation for most runners because their hooks stay secure, their sound is balanced, and they add heart-rate sensing. Choose the JBL Endurance Peak 4 for tougher dust-and-water protection, the Skullcandy Push Active or JLab GO Sport+ for lower-cost hooked earbuds, and the Bose Ultra Open or Shokz OpenRun when hearing your surroundings matters more than isolation and bass.
One date detail matters: the Shokz OpenRun was part of RTINGS’ six-pick roundup on July 9, 2026, but moved to Notable Mentions on August 3. The live RTINGS list is now five products.
