Republican-aligned groups have driven an extraordinary surge in advertising in the 2026 Texas U.S. Senate race. The Texas Tribune reported on October 1 that nearly $259 million had been spent on general-election ads through September, and that more than 98% of the counted spending supported Republican nominee Ken Paxton—through both positive ads and attacks on Democrat James Talarico.

How much has been spent on ads in the Texas Senate race?

The Texas Tribune’s October 1, 2026 report put general-election ad spending through the end of September at nearly $259 million. Across the primary and general election stages combined, it reported $432 million. Those are different totals: the $259 million figure is for general-election ads, while $432 million covers both stages. Neither figure represents every campaign expense.

For comparison, the Tribune said $202 million was spent on ads in the 2024 Texas Senate contest between Ted Cruz and Collin Allred. The comparison is specifically between reported ad spending in the two general-election contests, not total campaign costs.

Where is the advertising money going?

More than 98% of the general-election ad spending counted in the Tribune’s report supported Paxton. That includes advertising promoting Paxton and ads attacking Talarico. Most of the ads ran on broadcast television and streaming services, according to the Tribune.

The scale of spending does not mean every dollar came directly from Paxton’s campaign. Outside groups have played a major role, and reported ad estimates, commitments to buy future airtime, and filed expenditures measure different things.

Which Republican groups are spending in Texas?

Senate Leadership Fund and Texas PAC

On September 22, the Tribune reported that the Senate Leadership Fund had raised its Texas advertising commitment to $100 million. It also reported that nearly $70 million had already been spent by the group on advertising, with an additional $30 million in ads to be booked through the connected Texas PAC. The article put Republican general-election spending above $140 million at that point.

Those figures describe different categories: a commitment is a planned or pledged amount, while an amount described as already spent reflects advertising already purchased or run. The September 22 report also estimated nearly $66 million in Texas PAC spending during September, compared with about $22 million for Talarico, and approximately $103 million in total Republican group spending for the month.

Other reported spending

The Associated Press separately reported that the Senate Leadership Fund had put more than $100 million into Texas advertising that month and that MAGA Inc. had committed more than $20 million in ads supporting Paxton. Axios reported that Texas PAC filed a report showing more than $61.4 million in spending over two days, bringing its reported spending for Paxton to more than $131 million in 17 days. Axios’s figure includes ads and other activities, so it should not be described as advertising alone.

These reports use different dates and categories. Their figures should not be added together as if each measured a separate pool of ad spending.

Why don’t the candidates’ fundraising totals tell the same story?

Campaign fundraising is separate from outside-group advertising. In a July 20 report, the Tribune said the candidates’ latest quarterly filings showed Talarico had raised $31.6 million and Paxton had raised $9.3 million. Those dated campaign receipts are not October totals, and they do not measure super PAC ad commitments or outside-group spending.

What does the spending record mean in context?

The Tribune reported that Republican spending accelerated after Talarico had dominated the airwaves earlier in the general-election period. Its October 1 report also cited AdImpact for an estimate that Talarico had spent $61 million on ads since the general election began. That figure describes Talarico’s ad spending, not his fundraising.

The race is unfolding in a state with a long Republican winning streak, but two historical milestones should not be conflated: Democrats last won a Texas U.S. Senate race in 1988, while Republicans last lost a statewide Texas race in 1994, according to the Tribune.

How to check official campaign-finance records

The Federal Election Commission identifies Paxton’s candidacy and principal campaign committee, Ken Paxton for Senate. Its election-data page cautions that displayed totals may not include the latest submitted filings. For an up-to-date audit, use the FEC’s filing records and check the filing date and coverage period attached to each figure. Ad-tracker estimates and news reports can describe advertising activity, but they are not interchangeable with committee filings.
