If Tesla Autosteer or Navigate on Autopilot stops working, read the exact alert, keep driving manually, and check camera visibility, calibration, operating conditions, and driver-attention status. Tesla says many temporary conditions clear on the next drive. If the alert remains through multiple drives, calibration exceeds 100 miles (160 km), or you can see damage or misalignment, schedule Tesla service.
Start with the alert and take manual control
Do not try to recover Autosteer or Full Self-Driving while the car is moving by repeatedly changing settings. The driver remains responsible for steering, speed, braking, and observation whenever an assistance feature is unavailable or disengaged.
Read the touchscreen or instrument-cluster message word for word. For example, alert APP_w048 says, “Self-Driving features are currently unavailable on your vehicle.” Alert APP_w224 says, “Continue to your destination. Your vehicle is OK to drive.” The second message means the vehicle can be driven manually; it does not mean Autosteer or FSD is available.
Tesla’s troubleshooting guidance says a temporary unavailability can clear on the next drive. If the same condition persists across multiple drives, Tesla says to schedule service at your earliest convenience.

Use this first-check sequence
- Continue manually. Keep both attention and control on the road. Do not rely on Autosteer, Navigate on Autopilot, or Full Self-Driving (Supervised) while diagnosing the problem.
- Record the exact alert. Note whether it mentions cameras, calibration, driver attention, speed, lane markings, or general feature unavailability. A photograph of the message can help a service technician.
- Inspect the forward camera area. Look for dirt, mud, ice, snow, dew, condensation, glare, or anything placed over the camera view.
- Remove external interference. Bike racks, wraps, stickers, rubber coatings, and a damaged or misaligned bumper can interfere with the cameras or their field of view.
- Check the driving conditions. Rain, snow, fog, faded lane lines, narrow or winding roads, bright glare, and extreme temperatures can make the system temporarily unavailable.
- Confirm the prerequisites. Depending on the vehicle and software, headlights may need to be On or Auto, the seat belt must be buckled, the driver seat occupied, lane markings visible, and the vehicle within the feature’s usable speed range.
- Drive normally and reassess. If a camera-calibration message is shown, continue driving in suitable conditions rather than stopping the process. Escalate if calibration does not complete within Tesla’s stated limits.
Camera visibility: the most common physical check
What can block or degrade the cameras
Tesla’s troubleshooting information lists ordinary contamination and weather effects as possible causes. Check the camera area for road film, mud, salt, snow, ice, water droplets, dew, condensation, or direct glare. A clean-looking windshield or bumper does not rule out a small patch of moisture or residue in the camera’s view.
Also inspect for non-factory additions or physical changes. Tesla identifies bike racks, vehicle wraps, stickers, rubber coatings, and a damaged or misaligned bumper as potential sources of camera interference. If a bumper has been hit or replaced, do not assume that an apparently cosmetic change is harmless to the driver-assistance cameras.
How to clean safely
- Park safely and switch to manual driving before inspecting the vehicle.
- Follow the cleaning instructions in the vehicle’s touchscreen Owner’s Manual for the camera and surrounding glass or trim.
- Use a clean microfiber glass cloth as a practical, generic tool. Tesla does not endorse a particular cloth brand.
- Remove loose dirt gently rather than grinding grit across the glass or camera cover.
- After cleaning, allow condensation, frost, or remaining moisture to clear and then test only when lane markings and visibility are adequate.
Do not cover a camera, apply a coating around it, or add an accessory that intrudes into its view. If the camera cover is cracked, the bumper is visibly shifted, or cleaning does not change the alert, treat the issue as a service matter rather than repeatedly retrying Autosteer.
Camera calibration: how long to drive and when to stop waiting
Normal calibration distance
When Tesla displays a camera-calibration message, the system is collecting the road and image information it needs. Tesla’s current Model S troubleshooting manual says calibration typically completes after 20–25 miles (32–40 km). That is a typical distance, not a guarantee: road layout, lane visibility, weather, traffic, and environmental conditions can change how quickly calibration completes.

Continue driving manually on roads with clear lane markings and reasonable visibility. A calibration message by itself does not indicate that the vehicle is unsafe to drive manually; it indicates that the affected assistance features are not ready.
Calibration service threshold
If calibration has not completed after 100 miles (160 km), Tesla’s guidance is to schedule service. Schedule service sooner if the vehicle reports a camera fault repeatedly, a camera or bumper is damaged, or the feature remains unavailable after the display indicates calibration succeeded.
Operating prerequisites and environmental limits
Autosteer can be unavailable even when no component has failed. Requirements vary by model, software version, road type, and configuration, but the following checks commonly determine whether engagement is permitted.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Headlights | Set headlights to On or Auto when the vehicle requires it. | The feature may not engage if the required lighting state is not met. |
| Seat belt | Driver seat occupied and seat belt buckled. | Occupancy and restraint status are engagement prerequisites. |
| Speed | Vehicle is within the usable speed range shown for the current road and configuration. | Autosteer availability can change with speed and road type. |
| Lane markings | Both lane boundaries are sufficiently visible for the system to interpret them. | Faded, missing, or ambiguous lines can prevent engagement or cause disengagement. |
| Weather and light | Check for rain, snow, fog, bright glare, and extreme temperatures. | Reduced camera contrast or visibility can make assistance temporarily unavailable. |
| Road geometry | Be cautious on narrow or winding roads. | Complex geometry can exceed the conditions in which the feature is offered. |
These limits can be temporary. A clear lane on a later drive may allow engagement without a repair. Do not interpret a successful later engagement as proof that a persistent hardware fault has been fixed if the warning returns repeatedly.

Driver-attention lockouts
Autosteer requires hands-on-wheel attentiveness and continuous monitoring of the road. Tesla’s Autosteer manual states: “Your hands must be on the steering wheel at all times while Autosteer is engaged, and you must monitor your surroundings, the road, and other road users.”
The vehicle issues prompts when it does not detect adequate attention. Ignoring repeated prompts can disable Autosteer for the rest of that drive. This is a lockout, not necessarily a camera or mechanical failure. Once stopped for the drive, do not attempt to defeat the monitoring system; continue manually and follow the alert’s instructions.
Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can disengage when driver attention is not confirmed or when a camera becomes obscured. Tesla’s Self-Driving manual says: “If this happens, take control of steering immediately.” Treat that instruction as urgent, even if the car still appears to be tracking the lane.
Why Navigate on Autopilot stops when Autosteer still works
Navigate on Autopilot builds on Autosteer, so it cannot remain active when Autosteer cancels. It can also cancel independently when you turn it off or when the vehicle leaves a controlled-access highway while Autosteer remains active.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The lane-line display helps distinguish these states. A change from one blue lane line to two blue lane lines indicates that Navigate on Autopilot has canceled while Autosteer continues. In that situation, the car may still provide lane-centering assistance, but route-level Navigate behavior is no longer active and you must manage the route and upcoming maneuvers yourself.
Navigate-only cancellation
- Autosteer remains engaged but the vehicle exits a controlled-access highway.
- You turn Navigate on Autopilot off while leaving Autosteer on.
- Route or road conditions no longer meet Navigate’s requirements, while basic Autosteer remains available.
Complete Autosteer loss
- Autosteer itself cancels because of attention, visibility, lane, speed, or environmental conditions.
- A camera is blocked or calibration is incomplete.
- The vehicle reports a broader Self-Driving-unavailable alert.
When Autosteer cancels, Navigate on Autopilot necessarily stops with it. Take over immediately rather than waiting for the system to re-engage.

Feature behavior and availability depend on region, vehicle model and trim, model year, vehicle configuration, Self-Driving hardware, and software version. A feature that is absent or behaves differently after a vehicle change may reflect eligibility rather than a failure.
Use the vehicle’s own touchscreen Owner’s Manual and its Self-Driving settings to confirm the behavior for that specific configuration. Online descriptions can differ from the labels and rules installed in your car.

Tesla’s Autosteer firmware support notice identifies production ranges of 2012–2023 Model S, 2016–2023 Model X, 2017–2023 Model 3, and 2020–2023 Model Y. Those ranges describe potential campaign applicability, not automatic eligibility: the notice is VIN-specific. Verify the vehicle identification number and the notice shown for your car before assuming a firmware campaign applies.
When to schedule Tesla service
Schedule service when the same warning survives multiple drives, calibration has not completed after 100 miles (160 km), or the vehicle has visible camera, bumper, wiring, or mounting damage. Service is also appropriate when a feature remains unavailable after a reported successful calibration, or when cleaning and suitable weather do not change a recurring camera alert.
Information to include in the service request
- The exact alert text and any code, such as
APP_w048orAPP_w224. - The date, time, approximate mileage, road type, weather, and visibility when the warning appeared.
- Whether Autosteer, Navigate on Autopilot, or both were unavailable.
- Whether the issue clears after a power cycle or a later drive, without relying on that as a permanent repair.
- Any recent windshield, bumper, body, wrap, accessory, or collision work near the cameras.
- How many miles were driven while a calibration message remained, including whether the total exceeded 100 miles (160 km).
Keep driving manually until the appointment. A service request should not be delayed in order to accumulate more distance when there is visible damage or an urgent control warning.

Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
| Observed situation | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| One-time warning after heavy rain, snow, glare, or dirty glass | Drive manually, clean the camera area as directed, and reassess on a later drive with clear visibility. |
| “Cameras calibrating” message | Continue driving manually in suitable conditions; typical completion is 20–25 miles (32–40 km). |
| Calibration still incomplete after 100 miles (160 km) | Schedule Tesla service. |
| Repeated attention prompts followed by Autosteer loss | Accept the lockout for the rest of the drive and maintain manual control. |
| Two blue lane lines while Autosteer remains active | Navigate on Autopilot has canceled; manage the route manually while Autosteer, if still appropriate, remains engaged. |
| Visible camera or bumper damage, or recurring alerts across drives | Schedule service rather than repeatedly attempting re-engagement. |
What to remember
- Read the alert and drive manually until the cause is clear.
- Check camera visibility, calibration status, weather, lane markings, headlights, seat-belt and occupancy status, speed, and external obstructions.
- Ignored attentiveness prompts can disable Autosteer for the rest of the drive.
- Navigate on Autopilot depends on Autosteer but can cancel separately when the highway or route conditions change.
- Persistent alerts, visible damage, and calibration that exceeds 100 miles (160 km) warrant Tesla service.
