Then help them choose one realistic next step, offer support they welcome, and make room for rest. The goal is not to make your child study for your approval; it is to help them build a plan that belongs to them.
What does “do it for yourself” mean?
It means helping your teenager connect their effort to their own priorities, not demanding that they adopt yours. Those priorities might be a subject they enjoy, a goal they have set, or simply getting through the week with less stress. They do not have to be grand or fixed for the whole year.
The NSW Department of Education’s wellbeing activities invite students to consider, “Why is learning important to you?” That is a useful starting question because it leaves space for the student’s answer. Try asking, “What would you like to get out of this year?” or “What would feel like a manageable study step this week?” Then listen before suggesting solutions.
How can you help without taking over?
Agree on one next step
An HSC workload can feel too large when it is treated as one task. Help your teenager turn it into something specific and small: review one set of notes, attempt a few practice questions, or work for a short, agreed block. The HSC Help 2023 page reproduces University of Sydney student advice from Master of Teaching student Wesley Lai: “Setting up a schedule will help you organise your time so much better.” The same advice recommends breaking work into manageable parts and keeping the schedule realistic.

#1 Best Overall
Ask whether your child wants help making the plan. A schedule should guide them, not become another standard they can fail to meet. Paper and pen are enough to map out tasks and study blocks; a purchased planner is an optional convenience, not a requirement.
Offer practical help, with permission
Instead of repeatedly asking whether they have studied, offer specific help: “Would it help if I quizzed you on those terms?” or “Do you want a quiet hour at the table?” If they decline, ask what kind of support would be useful—or whether they would rather handle it themselves. Practical support works best when the student has a say in it.
Plan for downtime as well as study
A usable schedule includes free time and rest, not just more work. The University of Sydney advice reproduced on the HSC Help 2023 page includes Wesley Lai’s reminder: “Make sure to schedule in some free time for yourself as well!” Treat that as sensible planning advice, not a guarantee of particular results. A plan that leaves no room for ordinary life may be difficult to sustain.
What if your child has lost motivation?
Start with curiosity rather than assuming laziness or a lack of ambition. You might ask, “What’s making study hard at the moment?” or “Is there one thing that would make this week easier?” Listen for the practical obstacle they identify before deciding what help to offer. Low motivation can have different explanations; the guidance available here does not establish one cause or a universal fix.

- Unique Design: The cover is made with a shiny varnish, and inner paper desined with item columns are filled in the same color of the cover. It's dark gray ruled lines that doesn't interfere with writing.
If the immediate task feels overwhelming, help your teenager choose a smaller first step. If they are not ready to plan, a conversation and a break may be more useful than another timetable. Keep expectations open enough to adjust as you learn what is getting in the way.
Where can an HSC student turn for support?
Encourage your teenager to identify people and services they would feel comfortable approaching. NSW Department of Education wellbeing activities prompt students to map sources of support and consider which school staff they feel at ease talking to. That might be a trusted teacher or another staff member; the right contact is someone the student is willing to approach.

Take the student’s goals seriously without making marks the measure of their worth or treating one result as a verdict on their future. You can care about their effort and wellbeing at the same time. Ask what progress would matter to them, notice the steps they take, and let the plan change when it needs to. The aim is support that helps your teenager take ownership—not pressure that makes them feel they are studying for you.
