The original Tektronix MSO58 does not have one document called the “user manual.” For normal operation, start with the printable 5 Series MSO Help, then use the Quick Start and Installation and Safety guide for installation, the Specifications and Performance Verification Manual for limits and verification, and the Programmer Manual for remote control. First confirm whether your instrument is an original MSO58, an MSO58B, or the rackmount/low-profile MSO58LP; their hardware, firmware, connectors, and applicable procedures are not interchangeable in every detail.

Tektronix also lists a common 4, 5, 6 Series MSO Help revision dated July 9, 2026. Use it only after checking that its interface and firmware apply to your instrument. The support page, rather than an old PDF found in a search result, is the authoritative place to check current manuals and firmware.

Identify your oscilloscope before using a manual

  • MSO58: original 5 Series MSO, with eight FlexChannel inputs.
  • MSO58B: newer 5 Series B generation; related controls and capabilities do not make it the same hardware.
  • MSO58LP: low-profile/rackmount model with distinct installation documentation; the 5-WIN option is unavailable on this model.

Read the model label on the front or rear panel and open the system-information screen to record model, serial number, firmware, bandwidth, and installed options. Keep those details with the downloaded manual. A B-series or LP procedure can differ in connectors, operating-system options, cooling, and firmware behavior.

Bandwidth, sample rate, record length, and effective resolution change with channel usage, acquisition mode, and installed options. Tektronix’s 5 Series MSO datasheet is the source for configuration-specific figures. The 12-bit ADC specification does not mean every acquisition always has the same effective resolution; High Res mode and lower sample rates trade speed and bandwidth for additional vertical detail.

First-time setup

  1. Inspect the instrument. Record model, serial, firmware, bandwidth, application licenses, and probe inventory.
  2. Provide cooling clearance. The original 5 Series MSO specifies about 2 inches (50.8 mm) at the right side and rear for ventilation. Do not block the vents.
  3. Connect a compatible probe. Use a TekVPI-compatible probe or approved adapter and set the channel’s probe attenuation to match.
  4. Compensate passive probes. Connect each probe to the compensation output, display the square wave, and adjust compensation until tops are flat and transitions are clean.
  5. Configure the channel. Enable it, then set coupling, termination, bandwidth limit, volts/division, and probe type. Use DC coupling when the DC component matters; choose AC coupling only when intentionally removing it.
  6. Choose acquisition settings. Start with Auto or a suitable normal mode. Select record length for the required time span or waveform detail; use High Res when vertical detail matters more than maximum bandwidth and speed.
  7. Set an edge trigger. Select the source, rising or falling slope, and a threshold near the signal midpoint. Use Single Sequence for one-time events.
  8. Add measurements and save. Verify the source and measurement region, then save a screenshot and, when numerical analysis is needed, waveform data or CSV. Record the acquisition and probe settings with the result.

Get a stable, trustworthy waveform

Edge-trigger checklist

  • Choose the channel carrying the cleanest periodic signal as the trigger source.
  • Select the correct slope and place the level inside the actual signal amplitude.
  • Use Normal mode when you need the display to wait for a valid trigger; Auto mode can free-run and appear synchronized when it is not.
  • Adjust trigger position for pretrigger or post-trigger information, and use Single Sequence for an isolated event.

If the display is unstable

  1. Verify source, slope, and level.
  2. Inspect the probe ground connection and attenuation setting.
  3. Check coupling, signal amplitude, and frequency.
  4. Confirm that the signal is periodic enough for the chosen trigger.
  5. Try Normal instead of Auto, then reduce noise with bandwidth limiting, averaging, or High Res acquisition when appropriate.

Advanced trigger choices

Use pulse-width triggers for narrow, missing, or extended pulses; runt triggers for incomplete logic transitions; timeout triggers when a signal stops changing; logic triggers for digital conditions; and serial-bus triggers when the relevant licensed application is installed. Sequence or delayed triggering captures an event after a known condition. Trigger holdoff prevents false synchronization on repetitive waveforms with multiple edges. Menu names can vary with firmware, so confirm the exact path in the Help revision that matches your instrument.

Make voltage, timing, and frequency measurements

Automatic measurements

Frequency, period, rise time, fall time, amplitude, RMS, mean, and related measurements are meaningful only when the correct source is selected, the waveform is not clipped, the sample rate and record length are adequate, and the measurement gates cover the intended region. Check probe attenuation, termination, and bandwidth limits before trusting a number.

Tektronix MSO24 2-BW-500 500 MHz, 4 Channels Mixed Signal Oscilloscope
  • Analog input channels: 4 inputs
  • Bandwidth: 500 MHz
  • Sample rate: 2.5 GS/s Half channels; 1.25 GS/s All channels
  • Record length: 10 Mpoints per channel
  • Vertical resolution: 8 bits ADC; Up to 16 bits in high-resolution mode

Cursors

Use horizontal cursors for voltage or amplitude differences and vertical cursors for time differences. Paired cursors can determine period and frequency. Manual cursors are preferable when the instrument’s automatic definition does not match the engineering question.

Math and FFT

Waveform math can add, subtract, multiply, divide, and otherwise derive signals available in your firmware. FFT is useful for inspecting spectral content, but it is not automatically a calibrated EMI or compliance measurement. Window choice, spectral leakage, amplitude scaling, impedance, and bandwidth all affect interpretation.

Use FlexChannel inputs for mixed-signal debugging

Each FlexChannel input can operate as an analog channel or, with a compatible logic probe, provide digital channels. Optional probes enable up to 64 digital channels on the MSO58. Set digital thresholds for the actual logic family or device; a digital trace is a timing decision, not an analog-quality voltage measurement.

Tektronix TBS2072B 2-Ch Digital Storage Oscilloscope, 70 MHz, 2 GS/s
  • 2 Analog channels
  • 70 MHz bandwidth
  • 2 GS/s Sampling rate
  • 5 M record length on all channels
  • 9-inch WVGA color display with 15 horizontal grids shows 50% more signal

For example, connect an analog channel to a power rail, attach logic probes to a microcontroller bus, trigger on a transaction or digital edge, and correlate the bus event with the rail disturbance. Use cursors to quantify the delay. Keep probe loading and ground-lead inductance in mind, especially on fast edges.

Save, export, and document results

  • Screenshot: convenient for reports, but it may omit acquisition, probe, and trigger metadata.
  • Native waveform or setup file: preserves information for later analysis or repeatable instrument configuration.
  • CSV/tabular export: useful for numerical processing; verify scaling and time-axis settings.
  • USB or network transfer: use a consistent project and filename scheme.

For every saved result, include instrument model and serial, firmware, probe model and attenuation, bandwidth limit, sample rate, record length, acquisition mode, trigger source and level, date, and test-setup identifier.

Measure safely

A standard passive-probe ground lead is normally tied to the oscilloscope’s earth-referenced ground. Never clip it to an arbitrary high-voltage or floating node, and do not use it directly across a mains line. For floating or power-electronics measurements, use a suitably rated differential probe, isolated measurement system, or other approved method.

  • Check probe voltage, CAT, common-mode, frequency, and power ratings.
  • Stay within the oscilloscope input’s voltage and power limits.
  • Do not infer probe suitability from the oscilloscope’s bandwidth.
  • For switching converters, account for differential-probe bandwidth, common-mode range, current-probe limits, deskew, and compensation.

The measurement chain is limited by its weakest component: a 2 GHz scope cannot restore bandwidth lost in a passive probe, long ground lead, current probe, or differential probe.

Firmware and revision compatibility

Tektronix’s support listings include original and B-series firmware and a firmware entry identified as version 2.10.5 dated July 19, 2024. That is a dated listing, not a permanent statement that it is the latest release. Before updating:

  1. Record the current firmware and installed licenses.
  2. Read the release notes and “read this first” instructions.
  3. Confirm that the package applies to original, B-series, or LP hardware.
  4. Back up setups and data where practical.
  5. Keep power connected and uninterrupted during installation.
  6. After reboot, verify options, probes, display behavior, and remote-control compatibility.

Should you buy an MSO58, MSO58B, or an alternative?

When an MSO58 is a strong fit

  • You need eight simultaneous analog channels.
  • Analog and digital correlation is central to debugging.
  • Your lab already owns Tektronix probes, licenses, automation, or calibration procedures.
  • You value a large touchscreen, established workflow, and bandwidth options up to 2 GHz.

Original MSO58 versus MSO58B

A used original MSO58 can be attractive, but inspect calibration status, firmware support, installed licenses, display and fan condition, storage, connectors, probes, and service availability. The current-generation MSO58B product page displays a US price of $38,700 for its shown configuration on August 16, 2026; geography, options, taxes, and quotation terms can change the total. See the MSO58B product page for configuration details.
