What the AFG3051C is

The AFG3051C is a one-channel arbitrary/function generator in the AFG3000C family. Its principal sine-wave model rating is 50 MHz. It generates standard functions and stored arbitrary waveforms, with modulation, sweep, burst, triggering, synchronization and remote-control facilities. Family documentation specifies a 1 GS/s sample rate, arbitrary-waveform memory from 2 to 131,072 points depending on operating conditions, and nominal 10 Vp-p output amplitude subject to load, frequency, waveform and output-mode limits.

#1 Best Overall
Tektronix AFG1022 Arbitrary Function Generator, 25 MHz or 60 MHz
  • Tektronix AFG1022 Arbitrary Function Generator
  • Dual-channel, 25mhz bandwidth with 1Mvpp to 10Vpp output; 14-bit vertical resolution and 1Uhz frequency resolution
  • 50 built-in Arbitrary waveforms with continuous, modulation, sweep and Burst modes
  • Dedicated 3. 95” TFT LCD display, easy-to-navigate front panel and menu
  • Channel count: one analog output channel (the AFG3052C is the two-channel counterpart).
  • Interfaces: USB, LAN and GPIB on the relevant 50 MHz models.
  • Output impedance: 50 Ω. Selecting a load changes the amplitude calculation, not the physical source impedance.
  • Display and controls: color TFT LCD, shortcut function keys, numeric keypad, rotary control and bezel-menu buttons.
  • Noise: pseudo-random noise, not a true analog random-noise source.

The color TFT display was a C-series change from the earlier B series. Tektronix’s comparison is documented in its AFG3000B and AFG3000C differences FAQ. Tektronix lists the AFG3000 family as discontinued effective December 30, 2020 and suggests the AFG31000 family for current-product requirements.

First-time installation and safe connection

  1. Inspect the shipping carton and instrument for damage before applying power.
  2. Confirm the model and serial number, grounded power cord, USB cable, BNC cable and included documentation or accessories.
  3. Connect the instrument to the correct grounded mains supply. Leave the cooling openings unobstructed and provide adequate ventilation.
  4. Read the separate compliance and safety instructions before connecting the output to a powered circuit.
  5. Connect the output to a suitably rated oscilloscope, counter, load or device under test. Keep output disabled while changing cables.
  6. Set the generator’s output-load assumption to match the measurement connection before evaluating amplitude.
  7. Enable the output only after the cable and receiving instrument are connected.

“Floating output” does not mean unlimited isolation. Tektronix specifies a maximum voltage between chassis ground and common ground of 42 Vp-p, DC plus peak AC for the AFG3000 family. The safety document takes precedence for hazardous, mains-referenced or differential connections.

Generate a 1 kHz sine wave

  1. Press the Sine function key.
  2. Select or highlight Frequency, enter 1 kHz on the numeric keypad, and confirm with the applicable unit key or bezel control.
  3. Set Amplitude to 2 Vp-p.
  4. Set Offset to 0 V unless the circuit requires another bias.
  5. Choose the correct load assumption, normally 50 Ω for a terminated system or High Z for a high-impedance input.
  6. Connect the output to the oscilloscope or counter, then press Output to enable the channel.
  7. Verify frequency, peak-to-peak voltage and offset on the measuring instrument.

Key labels and confirmation behavior can vary with firmware revision, so use the on-screen bezel labels in your instrument’s manual revision. The most common amplitude mistake is a load mismatch: a setting calculated for 50 Ω can appear approximately twice as large on a high-impedance oscilloscope input. Check both the AFG load setting and the oscilloscope termination before changing amplitude or offset.

Standard waveforms and signal functions

Signal Settings to review
Sine Frequency, amplitude, offset and phase
Square Frequency, amplitude, offset and duty cycle
Ramp Frequency, amplitude, offset and symmetry
Pulse Period or frequency, width, delay, rise time and fall time
Noise Amplitude and offset; the source is pseudo-random
DC DC level and output-enable state
Arbitrary Waveform selection, sample rate or time, amplitude, offset and filter/interpolation behavior

Modulation, sweep, burst and triggering

Modulation

Modulation varies a carrier using an internal or external source. Select the modulation type, source, depth or deviation and any applicable frequency. Not every modulation combination is available at every carrier frequency, amplitude or waveform; consult the full manual and technical reference for limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sweep

Define start and stop frequencies, sweep time and the available linear or logarithmic mode. Choose the trigger source when the sweep must begin at a controlled event.

  • "Patented InstaView technology enables engineers to see actual waveform at Device Under Test (DUT) in real time, without need for oscilloscope and probe, eliminating uncertainty caused by mismatched impedance"

Burst

Set the waveform, cycle count and trigger source. A burst can use an internal, external or manual trigger. Check trigger polarity, delay and external trigger-level requirements before connecting a timing source.

Trigger and synchronization

A trigger starts or coordinates an operation; a sync output provides a timing reference for another instrument. Do not assume the sync connector has the same electrical role as the analog output or external-trigger input.

Create and load arbitrary waveforms

Front-panel editing

  1. Open the arbitrary-waveform edit function.
  2. Choose a standard mathematical shape or edit points and segments.
  3. Set waveform length and amplitude scaling, observing the model’s point and output limits.
  4. Save the waveform to internal memory or external USB storage.
  5. Recall it through the arbitrary-waveform edit/read workflow, then set frequency, amplitude and offset before enabling output.

USB transfer

Use a USB flash drive formatted FAT32; Tektronix states that NTFS media will not work. Files must use an expected extension, such as .tfw, to be visible to the instrument. Arbitrary files are not recalled through the ordinary Save/Recall menu. Enter the arbitrary waveform Edit menu, choose Read From…, and use the top bezel control to switch from internal memory to USB memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Setup files versus waveform files

A setup file and an arbitrary-waveform file are separate objects. Tektronix identifies .TFS as a setup file containing settings such as function, run mode, amplitude and offset; .TFW is associated with waveform data. A recalled setup may therefore restore settings without restoring the arbitrary samples. Back up and recall the waveform separately.

ArbExpress

Tektronix’s ArbExpress software can create, edit, transfer and recall waveforms for supported AFG and AWG instruments. A waveform made for another generator may exceed the AFG3051C’s point count, sample-rate, amplitude or file-format limits, so verify compatibility before transfer.

Remote control and SCPI

The AFG3051C supports USB, LAN and GPIB control. Use VISA to open the instrument resource and SCPI commands from the AFG3000 Series Programmer Manual (077074302). The following is a representative workflow, not a replacement for the command reference:

*IDN?
SOURce1:FUNCtion SINusoid
SOURce1:FREQuency 1000
SOURce1:VOLTage 2
SOURce1:VOLTage:OFFSet 0
OUTPut1:STATe ON

After connecting, query *IDN?, set the function and values, enable the output and check the error queue. Use the programmer manual to verify exact spelling, termination and operation-completion behavior for your firmware.

Remote-control checklist

  1. Confirm the instrument’s IP address or GPIB address.
  2. Test *IDN? before sending a larger script.
  3. Check the VISA resource string and line termination.
  4. Query the error queue after failed commands.
  5. Wait for operations to complete where the manual requires it.
  6. Confirm that output is enabled, not merely configured.
  7. Check the physical cable and load setting.
  8. If LAN discovery fails, test a direct USB connection.

Firmware and legacy support

Tektronix’s dedicated AFG3000C firmware page identifies firmware V1.0.7, released July 12, 2014, and lists the AFG3051C as supported. Tektronix’s broader catalog also exposes an AFG3000C firmware record V1.0.10, released February 12, 2017. Because these records differ, do not call either one universally “the latest” without checking the exact product family, installed version and package instructions.

  1. Record the installed firmware version.
  2. Back up important setups and waveform files.
  3. Download only the package intended for the AFG3000C family and applicable model.
  4. Read the release notes and installation instructions.
  5. Do not interrupt power during the update.
  6. After reboot, recheck output, load settings and saved files.

Troubleshooting guide

Output is approximately twice the expected voltage

Check whether the generator is set for a 50 Ω load while the oscilloscope input is high impedance, or whether the oscilloscope termination differs from the setup. Compare Vp-p, RMS and peak units, then use a suitable 50 Ω feed-through termination when appropriate.

USB is recognized but the waveform is missing

  • Reformat the drive as FAT32 rather than NTFS.
  • Check the expected file extension, such as .tfw.
  • Use Edit → Read From…, not the ordinary Save/Recall menu.
  • Try a simpler filename and directory.
  • Confirm the waveform was made for a compatible instrument.

Setup recalled without arbitrary data

Recall the waveform file separately. A .TFS setup can contain instrument settings without containing the arbitrary sample data.

Saved files show an old date

The AFG3000 series has no internal real-time clock, so file timestamps can appear as January 1, 1980.

Remote commands connect but fail

Check the resource string, address, command terminator, supported subsystem spelling, output state and operation timing. Read the instrument’s error queue and compare each command with the programmer manual.

Floating or differential connection appears unsafe

Respect the 42 Vp-p, DC-plus-peak-AC chassis/common-ground limit and consult the safety instructions. Floating output is not unlimited galvanic isolation.

Should you buy an AFG3051C today?

The AFG3051C remains useful on a service bench, in education or in a laboratory that needs a mature 50 MHz generator with GPIB, LAN and arbitrary-waveform functions. It is discontinued, however, and support is legacy-oriented. For a used unit, verify calibration records, performance using the technical reference, firmware, display condition, output integrity, included accessories and any applicable safety notification or serial-number guidance.

Tektronix points users toward the AFG31000 family as the replacement direction. A newer instrument is preferable when current manufacturer support, a modern interface, waveform-verification features, deeper memory or contemporary stimulus capabilities justify the additional cost. It is not automatically equivalent to a used AFG3051C; choose bandwidth, channel count, sample rate and analysis features for the application.
