TCL introduced the QM6K at CES on January 6, 2025, calling it the first model in its Precise Dimming series and an “Affordable Premium” TV. Its Mini-LED hardware, high-refresh gaming features and broad HDR support look ambitious for the range, but the company’s claimed brightness gains are not the same as measured HDR brightness: TechRadar recorded a peak of 559.8 nits in Filmmaker mode on its test sample. The QM6K’s strongest case is its combination of contrast, features and gaming support—not a promise of exceptionally bright HDR.
What TCL announced—and what “brightness boost” means
TCL announced the QM6K at CES on January 6, 2025, positioning it as the first television in its new Precise Dimming series. The company described the model as “Affordable Premium” and introduced its Halo Control Technology Suite. In TCL’s announcement, Scott Ramirez, the company’s vice president of Product Marketing and Development, Home Theater, said the suite was designed to improve picture quality and that the QM6K would “redefine the term ‘Affordable Premium.’” TCL’s announcement presents that as the company’s ambition, not an independent assessment.
TCL says its Pangu Lab-developed Super High Energy LED Chip increases brightness output by more than 53% and light efficiency by 10%. The chip is part of a larger system that TCL says also includes a Condensed Micro Lens, reduced Micro-Optical Distance, a 23-bit backlight controller and an HVA panel. The company claims the combination improves backlight uniformity by 143%, blooming control by more than 18%, static contrast to as much as 7,000:1, and DCI-P3 coverage to 98% or more. Those figures are manufacturer claims; they should not be read as independently measured results for every screen size or viewing mode. TCL’s launch details
What the QM6K offers
The QM6K combines QD-Mini LED backlighting with a QLED 4K UHD panel and local dimming. TCL’s 55-inch product page lists up to 500 local-dimming zones, 144Hz native refresh, Game Accelerator, Google TV, Onkyo 2.1 audio, and Dolby Atmos support. The platform also supports Dolby Vision IQ and HDR10+. TCL notes that features can vary by screen size, and Game Accelerator performance depends on resolution and compatible hardware. How bright is the QM6K in independent testing?
The independent numbers available here are more measured than TCL’s percentage-based chip claims. TechRadar recorded HDR peak brightness of 559.8 nits in Filmmaker mode and 695.5 nits in Standard mode. Its full-screen HDR measurements were 476.8 nits in Filmmaker mode and 594.4 nits in Standard mode. These are TechRadar lab results, not TCL specifications or guaranteed readings for every QM6K size and picture setting. TechRadar’s QM6K review

That helps explain the difference between “a big brightness boost” and “very bright HDR.” TCL’s more-than-53% figure describes its claimed improvement in brightness output from the new LED chip; it does not specify the measured peak brightness of the finished television. RTINGS likewise found the set’s HDR brightness too low for a truly impactful HDR presentation, even while praising its black levels. RTINGS’ QM6K review
TechRadar measured 94.7% UHDA-P3 and 71.2% BT.2020 coverage. Its review also praises the picture’s vibrant color and contrast. In practice, the TV’s local dimming and strong blacks can make dark scenes look compelling, but the measured brightness limits the intensity of small highlights and bright-room HDR impact compared with a substantially brighter display. How it performs for PS5, Xbox and PC gaming
The QM6K’s gaming specification is one of its clearest strengths. RTINGS reports that its 75-inch sample accepts 4K at 144Hz and 1080p at 288Hz, with VRR and ALLM, and has two HDMI 2.1 inputs. That combination can suit current consoles and a capable gaming PC, though console output depends on the game and console settings, and PC use requires a source and connection capable of the selected resolution and refresh rate. RTINGS’ testing
TCL lists Game Accelerator on the 55-inch product page but warns that the feature depends on resolution and compatible hardware. Since TCL also says some features vary by screen size, confirm the specifications for the particular diagonal you intend to buy rather than assuming all QM6K models behave identically. Picture trade-offs: contrast, halos and room conditions
RTINGS finds very good black levels and black uniformity, a useful foundation for dark-room movie watching. But it also notes that haloing remains visible around bright objects against dark backgrounds. TCL’s Halo Control claims are therefore best understood as claims of improvement, not proof that blooming is eliminated. RTINGS’ review
TechRadar also praises contrast and Halo Control, while noting minor corner vignetting. RTINGS cautions that direct glare and extreme viewing angles can hurt the image. For the best view, avoid placing the screen opposite strong light and try to seat viewers relatively close to the centerline. TechRadar’s review RTINGS’ viewing observations

Which QM6K size and price make sense?
TCL’s launch announcement covered 50-, 55-, 65-, 75-, 85- and 98-inch models, with launch MSRPs from $749.99 to $3,499.99. TechRadar reported a February 2025 release in the US and published the following launch-price list. Its 98-inch price differs from the amount in TCL’s announcement, so treat that entry specifically as the reviewer’s reported launch price, not a settled current price. Retail prices can change substantially after launch. TCL launch announcement TechRadar’s launch coverage

| 50 inches | $749.99 (TechRadar) |
| 55 inches | $799.99 (TechRadar) |

TCL’s product page displayed $549.99 for the 55-inch 55QM6K when the page was checked for this article; it is a current-page price, not the launch MSRP or a promise of a recurring sale price. Use the live listing to check today’s price, and compare the exact size rather than extrapolating from the 55-inch model. TCL’s 55QM6K listing
Choose size primarily by viewing distance, available wall or stand space, and the price of the specific model. The 75-inch version is the size RTINGS tested, so its detailed gaming and picture findings should not automatically be treated as identical measurements for smaller or larger versions.
Sound and everyday usability
TechRadar finds the interface straightforward to operate, while criticizing the built-in speakers as weak. TCL lists Onkyo 2.1 audio and Dolby Atmos support, but those labels do not establish that the TV can match a dedicated sound system. A soundbar is a reasonable optional addition if clearer dialogue, fuller movie sound or stronger impact matters to you. TechRadar’s review TCL’s product page
