Choose a TCL NXTPAPER phone if you want a conventional color smartphone that is also comfortable for reading; choose a dedicated E Ink phone if long stretches of text are your main priority and you can accept a more reading-focused screen. For a concrete comparison, this guide uses the U.S. TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G, Bigme HiBreak Pro, and BOOX Palma. Palma is an E Ink reader, not a verified phone replacement.
What’s the difference between NXTPAPER and E Ink?
TCL NXTPAPER is an LCD display with a matte treatment and reading-oriented features, not an electronic-paper screen. TCL describes its treatment as reducing glare and fingerprints and filtering blue light. The TCL 60 XE uses a 6.78-inch IPS LCD with 120Hz refresh, according to TCL’s U.S. product specifications.
E Ink phones use electronic paper, a display approach intended for a more static, paper-like reading experience. In practical terms, an LCD is better suited to color, video, animation, and smooth scrolling; E Ink is the more reading-centered choice for long sessions with mostly text. These are use-case distinctions based on the display types and product positioning, not results from a controlled head-to-head test.
What TCL’s blue-light figure does—and doesn’t—show
TCL says the 60 XE NXTPAPER display “filters 61% more blue light.” That is a manufacturer claim; the product page does not state the comparison baseline or test conditions. It does not establish that the phone prevents eye strain or protects against eye damage. The available product information does not support a medical comfort ranking between NXTPAPER and E Ink, so personal comfort is best judged in the conditions where you read.

Which is better for your reading?
Choose TCL NXTPAPER if you want one phone for everything
The 60 XE makes sense if reading is one part of your phone use rather than the main job of the device. Its color LCD and listed 120Hz refresh suit color-rich articles, comics, images, video, and conventional scrolling. TCL’s global NXTPAPER 60 product information also describes Max Ink Mode, though features and specifications can vary by region.

Choose an E Ink phone if text reading dominates
Consider the Bigme HiBreak Pro if you want a phone marketed around an E Ink screen and spend much of your time reading text. Its 5G dual-SIM claim does not guarantee that it will work on your carrier: check supported LTE and 5G bands, carrier certification, Android and security-update support, warranty, and local availability before purchase.
Choose BOOX Palma if a separate reader is acceptable
Palma is a useful phone-sized E Ink reader if you are willing to carry a separate device. BOOX lists Android and Google Play access, but its cited product information does not establish calling or mobile-network support. Do not buy it assuming it will replace your phone.

What about the larger NXTPAPER models?
TCL’s global product page describes the NXTPAPER 60 Ultra as having a 7.2-inch FHD+ NXTPAPER display and Max Ink Mode. Availability and features can vary by region. At launch, Tom’s Guide reported on September 4, 2025, that it was expected across Europe, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific; that launch-era report is not confirmation of current stock or availability. See Tom’s Guide’s launch coverage and check current local listings.
What to verify before buying
- Exact model and region: Confirm the device variant, storage, and features sold in your country; specifications can differ across NXTPAPER models and regions.
- Network support: For Bigme, check the exact LTE and 5G bands and carrier certification for your provider rather than relying on the general 5G dual-SIM claim.
- Software lifecycle: Look for a clear Android-version and security-update policy, especially if the phone will be a primary device.
- Warranty and seller: Confirm who handles returns and warranty service in your country, and check current stock with the seller.
- Storage needs: TCL lists microSD support up to 2TB for the U.S. 60 XE. Verify card compatibility for your exact model before buying a card.
Verdict
For a single everyday phone that also handles varied reading, the TCL 60 XE NXTPAPER 5G is the more versatile choice. For reading-first use, the Bigme HiBreak Pro is the more directly relevant E Ink phone, provided its network and support work for you. Pick BOOX Palma only when a separate reader—not a phone replacement—fits your needs.
