For a staging server that is already running, configure Panther with external_base_uri. The login steps depend on whether the site uses HTTP Basic, a login form, or an identity-provider flow; there is no single credential method that fits them all.
What Panther does—and what it does not do
Panther drives Chrome or Firefox through WebDriver, so the screenshot reflects a browser-rendered page rather than an HTTP response body. Symfony describes end-to-end tests as simulating how real users interact with an application through a browser. Panther can capture the current browser view, but the basic screenshot call does not itself authenticate you, wait for the page to finish rendering, or guarantee a full-page image.
This guide assumes the staging site is already deployed and reachable. Panther’s external_base_uri option tells the client to use that existing host rather than starting Panther’s built-in web server.
Install Panther and prepare a browser driver

Connect Panther to the staging host
Create a Panther client for Chrome or Firefox and set external_base_uri to the staging origin. A minimal PHP example for Chrome is:

$client = PantherTestCase::createPantherClient([
'browser' => PantherTestCase::CHROME,
'external_base_uri' => 'https://staging.example.com',
]);
$client->request('GET', '/');
// Complete the site's authentication flow here before capturing.
$client->takeScreenshot(__DIR__.'/screen.png');
Replace the example host and path with your real staging URL. This skeleton establishes the external host and capture method; it deliberately leaves authentication to the site’s actual gate. Panther’s documentation explains its client configuration and browser setup at the end-to-end testing guide.
Identify and handle the authentication gate
“Password-protected” can refer to several different mechanisms. Determine which one staging uses before writing the login portion of the script; a successful navigation request alone does not prove that the browser is authenticated.
HTTP Basic authentication
HTTP Basic authentication is indicated by an unauthenticated response that challenges the browser with WWW-Authenticate. Symfony’s Security documentation describes that challenge-and-credentials behavior: Symfony Security: HTTP Basic authentication. Panther’s general usage guide does not provide a universal credential-injection recipe for every browser and driver setup, so use the method supported by your configured WebDriver and the staging environment. Confirm in the browser that the challenge is satisfied and the protected page—not a repeated challenge or error—is displayed before capture.

Application login form
For a form-based login, use Panther’s browser interactions to visit the login page, locate the actual fields and submit control, enter credentials from approved secret configuration, and submit the form. Then wait for a page-specific authenticated state, such as a dashboard heading or a control only visible after sign-in. Do not assume a successful form submission means authentication succeeded; validation errors, expired credentials, or redirects can leave the browser unauthenticated.
Single sign-on, reverse-proxy gates, and other flows
An identity-provider redirect or reverse-proxy gate has its own behavior and may require project-specific test setup, approved test accounts, or an identity-provider test flow. A historical Panther issue describes one user’s CAS redirect problem, but it is an individual report, not a general Panther limitation or a current recipe: Panther issue: authentication. Verify your own flow rather than adapting that report as a universal solution.
Wait for the authenticated page, then capture it
After login, wait for a condition that identifies the exact page state you need. Panther provides browser wait helpers for elements and visibility; use a selector that is meaningful for your application. For example, if the page contains a unique [data-testid="staging-ready"] marker only after its protected content is rendered, wait for that marker before taking the screenshot. Replace it with a selector that exists in your application.

// After completing authentication and navigating to the target page:
$client->waitFor('[data-testid="staging-ready"]');
$client->takeScreenshot(__DIR__.'/screen.png');
Waiting for a page-specific element is more reliable than taking the screenshot immediately after calling request(): navigation may have started while the page is still rendering, or the browser may still be on a login screen. If the relevant content appears only after client-side work, choose a readiness marker that appears after that work has completed.
Choose the browser window and understand the image dimensions
The browser window size controls the dimensions of the ordinary screenshot. Set the window size to match the viewport you need, using the configuration appropriate to the chosen browser: Symfony’s guide documents Chrome arguments and resizing Firefox windows. A screenshot of the current browser view should not be described as guaranteed full-page capture; if you need the entire document, verify that your chosen browser and screenshot approach actually captures beyond the viewport.
Choose Chrome or Firefox based on which browser and driver are available and compatible in your environment, how the staging authentication flow behaves there, the desired viewport, and CI or container constraints. The cited Panther documentation establishes the browser choices and setup options, but does not establish which browser is faster or more reliable for this particular task.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Panther cannot start the browser: Check that the browser is installed, the matching driver is available, and the driver setup is compatible with the environment. Use Symfony’s setup guide for the applicable WebDriver configuration.
- The request lands on a login page or access-denied page: Verify the staging gate type and complete its actual authentication flow. For HTTP Basic, check for the
WWW-Authenticatechallenge; for forms or SSO, inspect the browser’s redirects and page state. - The screenshot captures a partially rendered page: Wait for an element that signals the protected content is ready rather than capturing as soon as navigation begins.
- The image is smaller than the full page: The ordinary screenshot reflects the browser window size. Configure the intended viewport, and do not assume the basic call captures the full document.
- The script works locally but not in CI: Compare installed browser and driver availability, browser configuration, and the staging authentication path in the CI environment. Keep secrets in the approved CI secret store and confirm the staging host is reachable there.
- A third-party login redirects unexpectedly: Treat the identity-provider flow as project-specific. Check its redirect and test-account requirements rather than assuming a Panther-wide authentication limitation.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a publicly reachable URL rather than a browser session that must log in, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. For a protected staging URL, first confirm the authentication method and whether the API request can be given the required access; do not assume a browser-driven SSO flow is interchangeable with an API request.
cURL example, adapting the target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://staging.example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API parameters. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Panther automatically sign in to every password-protected site?
No. Panther drives a browser, but the authentication interactions must match the site’s specific gate.
Can I use Panther with a staging site hosted outside my Symfony project?
Yes. Configure the client with external_base_uri for the already-running staging host.
