Quick Access Popup (QAP) 12 is worth considering if you repeatedly jump among folders, applications, documents, URLs, or file-dialog locations. It adds a configurable popup and dynamic menus that work across Windows programs, while Windows 11’s built-in File Explorer Quick access remains simpler for a short list of pinned folders. The official download page lists QAP version 12.3, dated May 12, 2026; verify the release page for a newer build before installing.
What Quick Access Popup 12 does
QAP is a launcher built around your own favorites. Its popup can contain folders, files, applications, URLs and other commands, so you can reach a project directory or start a program without first navigating through an Explorer window. It can also create dynamic menus for recent or frequent items; QAP’s documentation describes an optional SQLite database for those menus and their refresh process.
Version 12 began with version 12.0 on October 5, 2025. The release introduced a Clipboard Command favorite type and integration with Quick Clipboard Editor, including text case-conversion and encoding/decoding commands, plus saved clipboard-command workflows. The official download page currently lists version 12.3 (May 12, 2026): download and release notes.
Is QAP better than Windows 11’s built-in shortcuts?
Windows 11 already includes File Explorer Quick access. You can pin folders there, and on Windows 11 version 22H2 the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music and Videos folders are pinned by default. That is a good fit when you mainly need a compact list inside Explorer.

QAP addresses a broader workflow: one curated menu for locations and tools across supported Windows contexts, including Open and Save As dialogs. PowerToys Run takes a different approach, offering typed search for applications, folders and files along with calculations and system commands. Its documented default shortcut is Alt+Space; PowerToys must be running and Run must be enabled.

How do I display the Quick Access Popup menu?
QAP identifies middle-mouse click and Windows+W as common triggers. Try the keyboard shortcut first; it requires no special mouse hardware. If you prefer a mouse, click the scroll wheel. If that button conflicts with another application or your mouse has no usable middle button, QAP’s FAQ documents settings for changing the trigger and a keyboard alternative: QAP FAQ.
Build a useful first menu
- Install QAP using the official Easy Setup package, or choose the Portable ZIP if you need a folder-based installation.
- Add only high-frequency items at first: current projects, shared work folders, a few applications and any URL you open repeatedly.
- Group related entries into submenus so the popup remains scannable.
- Test the menu in both Explorer and an application’s Open or Save As dialog.
- Add dynamic recent or frequent-item menus only when they solve a real navigation problem; more entries are not automatically faster.
These are practical configuration recommendations based on QAP’s customization model, not a measured productivity test.

Can I change folders in file dialog boxes (Open, Save As, etc.)?
Yes. One of QAP’s central uses is reaching folder favorites from file dialogs, including Open and Save As windows. This is useful when an application’s own navigation starts in the wrong location or when the same project folders are used by several programs. Add those destinations as favorites, then invoke QAP while the dialog is active and select the folder.

Portable ZIP
- Download the Portable ZIP from the same page.
- Extract it to a writable folder outside protected locations such as
C:Program Filesor the root ofC:. - Run the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit executable for your system.
- Keep the extracted folder when moving QAP to another machine; its INI settings and optional frequent-items database are stored in the working directory.
QAP normally removes its temporary working folder after a normal exit. For a portable update, quit QAP and extract the new ZIP over the existing folder. Follow the project’s detailed installation notes for edge cases: installation and portable guidance.

Microsoft introduced File Explorer tabs in Windows 11 version 22H2 without standard API commands that third-party tools can use to manipulate tabs fully. QAP has a workaround that can open a single folder in a new Explorer tab, but it cannot reliably provide deeper operations such as opening groups of folders in multiple tabs or rearranging tabs. If advanced tab control is your priority, the same documentation points to file managers such as Directory Opus and Total Commander, whose APIs expose more robust tab operations. That is a file-manager choice, not a reason to expect QAP to replace Explorer’s tab management.
Why does QAP sometimes look frozen or take time to show its popup menu?
Dynamic menus can use QAP’s optional SQLite database to collect and refresh recent or frequent items. A refresh may make the menu appear delayed, especially when a dynamic menu contains many entries. Start troubleshooting by testing a small static menu, then review or temporarily disable dynamic recent/frequent menus. Also check whether the chosen mouse or keyboard trigger is being intercepted by another utility, and try the alternate trigger documented in the FAQ.
Who should use QAP?
- Good fit: people who revisit several work folders, use many Open/Save As dialogs, or want folders, apps, files and URLs in one menu.
- Probably unnecessary: users who need only a handful of Explorer folder pins or prefer typing every launch into PowerToys Run.
- Consider another file manager: users whose main requirement is sophisticated Explorer-tab automation rather than cross-program favorites.
QAP is free; the project asks users who find it useful to support ongoing development with a donation. No independent study establishes a specific number of clicks or minutes saved, so treat productivity gains as workflow-dependent rather than guaranteed.

Bottom line: Quick Access Popup 12 adds a configurable, cross-program favorite menu that complements—not replaces—Windows 11 Quick access and PowerToys Run. Start with Windows+W and a small set of high-value folders, use the portable ZIP if you need self-contained settings, and keep its documented Explorer-tab limits in mind.
