Use Puppeteer’s ElementHandle.screenshot() to save a screenshot of one webpage element. Launch a browser, navigate to the page, wait for the element, capture it, and close the browser in a finally block so resources are released even if something fails.

Capture one webpage element with Puppeteer

Install Puppeteer in your Node.js project with npm install puppeteer. Then save this example as an ES module, such as element-shot.mjs, and run it with node element-shot.mjs:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });

  const element = await page.waitForSelector('.target-element');
  if (!element) throw new Error('Target element was not found');

  await element.screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
  await element.dispose();
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Replace https://example.com with the page URL and .target-element with a CSS selector matching the element you want. The output file is element.png in the process’s current working directory. The example uses networkidle2 because it appears in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide, but it is not a universal requirement; choose a navigation wait condition and element-readiness check suited to the page.

What the capture does

ElementHandle.screenshot() captures the element represented by that handle, using Page.screenshot() internally. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view if needed. If the element is removed from the DOM before capture, the call throws, so on dynamic pages obtain the handle shortly before taking the screenshot and handle detachment errors in application code. See the ElementHandle screenshot API and the screenshot guide.

Save an image or use the returned data

Passing path writes the image to disk. Without a path, the method returns image data as a Uint8Array by default; set encoding: 'base64' to receive a base64 string instead.

const imageBytes = await element.screenshot();
// imageBytes is a Uint8Array by default

Use the returned bytes directly when sending an image to another part of your application or writing it yourself. The documented screenshot options include type, quality, clip, fullPage, and omitBackground. PNG is the default format, and quality does not apply to PNG. Consult the ScreenshotOptions API for the option definitions available in your installed version.

Choose between an element handle and a locator

The direct screenshot method is documented on ElementHandle, which is why the runnable example uses waitForSelector() to get a handle. Puppeteer also recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements: locator actions include readiness checks and retries. The documentation cited here does not establish a locator screenshot method, so use a handle for the actual element capture.

Locator selection supports CSS and Puppeteer selector syntax for text, accessibility role and name, XPath, and shadow-root queries. See Puppeteer’s page interaction guide and Page.locator(). On pages that replace nodes dynamically, avoid holding a handle for longer than necessary.

Troubleshoot common capture failures

  • The selector returns no element: Check that the selector matches the page’s DOM and that navigation has reached the state where the element exists. Wait for the relevant selector rather than assuming a navigation-idle event means the page’s content is ready.
  • The screenshot call throws because the element detached: The page may have replaced or removed the node between selection and capture. Locate it nearer to the capture call and add application-specific handling for the error; Puppeteer documents the failure but does not prescribe one universal retry strategy.
  • The saved image is not where expected: A relative path is resolved from the Node process’s current working directory. Use an absolute path if the output location must be fixed.
  • Navigation does not finish with networkidle2: Some pages keep network activity open. Choose a different waitUntil condition and separately wait for the target element or another page-specific readiness signal.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can return an image or PDF without setting up Puppeteer locally. The API accepts a URL and can capture an element with a CSS selector. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response includes verdict and billing headers. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For setup and available parameters, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com --data-urlencode selector=.target-element -o element.webp

ScreenshotNeo offers 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for the free plan.
