Exchange rates affect Taiwan technology investments twice: they change how a Taiwan company converts foreign-currency sales and costs into its reporting currency, and they change what a foreign investor ultimately receives after converting the share price and dividends back home. For a U.S. investor, a stronger Taiwan dollar can reduce a dollar-reporting company’s translated revenue while increasing the dollar value of a Taiwan-listed share; a weaker Taiwan dollar can produce the opposite mix.
TSMC is the clearest example. Substantially all of its sales are denominated in U.S. dollars, but its financial statements are published in New Taiwan dollars (NT dollars). Its 2024 annual-report sensitivity indicated an approximately 0.4 percentage-point operating-margin decrease for every 1% depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the NT dollar. That is a company-specific sensitivity, not a rule for every Taiwan technology stock.
Start with the exchange-rate quote
Throughout this article, the primary quote is E = NT$ per US$. If E is 32, one U.S. dollar buys NT$32. An appreciation of the NT dollar means E falls: the dollar buys fewer NT dollars. A depreciation of the NT dollar means E rises.

| Move in NT$/US$ (E) | What happened to the NT dollar | Effect on US$ sales translated into NT$ | Typical effect for a U.S.-based holder of a Taiwan share |
|---|---|---|---|
| E falls | NT dollar appreciated | Fewer NT dollars per U.S. dollar of sales | Currency headwind if the local share price is unchanged |
| E rises | NT dollar depreciated | More NT dollars per U.S. dollar of sales | Currency tailwind if the local share price is unchanged |
The two channels that determine your return
1. Company-result translation
A Taiwan company may invoice customers in U.S. dollars but prepare its income statement in NT dollars. A simple translation is:
NT$ revenue = US$ revenue × NT$/US$ exchange rate
If the exchange rate falls from 32 to 30, US$1 million of unchanged sales translates from NT$32 million to NT$30 million. The customer did not buy less, but the reported NT-dollar amount is lower. The same arithmetic applies to expenses, assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies.
The effect on profit depends on the entire currency mix. If a company receives U.S. dollars and pays most costs in NT dollars, NT appreciation generally compresses reported revenue and operating profit. If it also pays substantial costs in U.S. dollars, euros, yen or other currencies, those costs may fall in NT-dollar terms at the same time. Capital expenditure, equipment purchases, energy, materials, debt and cash balances can all have different currency exposures.

A U.S. investor in an ordinary share listed in Taiwan converts the local share price into dollars. With P representing the Taiwan share price in NT dollars:
US$ value per share = P ÷ E
The complete dollar return over a holding period is:
Dollar return = (P1 ÷ P0) × (E0 ÷ E1) − 1
The first factor is the local share-price return. The second is the currency return from the investor’s perspective. A rising share price can therefore produce a smaller dollar gain—or a loss—if the NT dollar weakens sharply. A flat local share price can still produce a dollar gain when the NT dollar appreciates.

Operating exposure is not the same as translation exposure
Translation exposure is the mechanical conversion of financial statements. Operating or transaction exposure concerns the cash the company actually receives and pays. A company with U.S.-dollar sales and U.S.-dollar equipment purchases may have less net exposure than its revenue line suggests. Conversely, a mismatch between the timing of receipts and payments can create gains or losses even when annual currencies appear balanced.

Investors should therefore avoid treating a single revenue-currency percentage as a complete forecast of earnings. The relevant question is the net exposure after costs, capital spending, debt, cash and hedges.
What TSMC discloses about currency risk
Sales currency and reporting currency
TSMC states that substantially all of its sales are denominated in U.S. dollars while its financial statements are published in NT dollars. A stronger NT dollar consequently reduces the NT-dollar value of a given amount of U.S.-dollar revenue. TSMC also presents U.S.-dollar figures for scale; its 2024 annual report reported consolidated revenue of US$90.08 billion and net income of US$36.52 billion.
The 2024 sensitivity
Based on 2024 results, TSMC disclosed an approximate 0.4 percentage-point decrease in operating margin for each 1% depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the NT dollar. In that wording, a 1% depreciation of the U.S. dollar against the NT dollar means the NT dollar strengthened by roughly 1%. The sensitivity is an illustration of the relationship under the company’s 2024 conditions; it is not a promise that the same margin change will occur in every quarter or for another company.
What management said in Q2 2025
On its second-quarter 2025 earnings call, TSMC said sequential NT-dollar appreciation of about 4.4% reduced NT-dollar revenue by approximately 4.4% and reduced gross margin by roughly 180 basis points. Management identified the foreign-exchange rate as one of six factors determining profitability. The figures describe the company’s reported quarter and its stated attribution; they should not be applied as a universal multiplier to all Taiwan semiconductor businesses.
Hedging reduces, but does not erase, the exposure
TSMC says it uses foreign-exchange forwards, swaps, foreign-currency debt, deposits and other instruments. It also states that these hedges reduce, but do not entirely eliminate, the effect of currency movements on assets and liabilities. Hedges can change the size and timing of gains or losses, and their coverage can differ by currency, maturity and exposure. A hedge therefore makes the earnings response less direct, not irrelevant.

A worked example for a U.S. investor
Assume, purely for illustration, that a Taiwan share costs NT$1,000 when E is 32. Its dollar value is US$31.25. Suppose the local share price rises 10% to NT$1,100.
Case A: the NT dollar appreciates 5%
A 5% appreciation takes E from 32 to 30.4. The ending dollar value is NT$1,100 ÷ 30.4, or about US$36.18. The U.S. investor’s return is approximately 15.8%, higher than the 10% local return because the currency move helped.
Case B: the NT dollar depreciates 5%
A 5% depreciation takes E from 32 to 33.6. The ending dollar value is about US$32.74. The local gain remains 10%, but the dollar return is only about 4.8% because currency reduced the result.

The example isolates the conversion effect. It does not predict a share price, include taxes or fees, or account for the exchange rate used by a broker, depositary or dividend payment service.
What happened to the Taiwan dollar in 2025
The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) reported that the NT dollar appreciated 4.3% against the U.S. dollar during 2025 compared with the end of 2024. On an average-year basis, it reported a 3.0% appreciation in 2025.
Those are different measurements. The 4.3% figure compares two end-of-period rates; the 3.0% figure compares annual averages. An end-period rate is appropriate for valuing a position on two specific dates. An average rate is appropriate for comparing a period’s typical translation rate, such as annual revenue. Mixing the two can make a company’s reported change appear larger or smaller than it really was.

The Central Bank linked 2025 exchange-rate movements to tariff-policy uncertainty, foreign-investor flows, exporter selling of U.S. dollars and expectations for U.S. monetary policy. Those drivers can push the currency in opposite directions, so a historical move should be treated as a scenario input rather than a forecast.

A U.S.-listed technology company gives a U.S. investor a return primarily in dollars, although its own business may have extensive foreign-currency exposure. A Taiwan-listed company adds a direct NT-dollar conversion layer. The comparison is broader than simply asking which currency is stronger.
| Comparison point | Taiwan technology investment | U.S. technology investment | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local share-price return | Quoted in NT dollars for ordinary shares | Usually quoted in U.S. dollars | What did the security return in its listing currency? |
| Home-currency translation | NT$/US$ movement directly changes a U.S. investor’s result | Usually no separate listing-currency conversion for a U.S. investor | Did currency add to or subtract from the local return? |
| Revenue and cost mix | Often includes U.S. dollars, NT dollars, euros, yen and other currencies | Also multinational; exposure depends on the company, not its listing country | Which currencies drive sales, costs, capital spending and debt? |
| Hedge coverage | May use forwards, swaps, foreign-currency debt and deposits | Varies by issuer and is not guaranteed by the listing venue | What does the latest filing say is hedged, and for how long? |
| Dividend currency | Ordinary-share dividends are declared in NT dollars; an overseas receipt is converted before or during payment | Dividends are generally declared in U.S. dollars, though the business can still face currency effects | What exchange rate applies on the dividend record, payment or conversion date? |
| Valuation | Compare price and earnings in a consistent currency and period | Use the same discipline; a dollar quote does not remove global operating risk | Are you comparing trailing or forecast figures and the same accounting basis? |
| Macro drivers | Trade policy, exporter flows, foreign-investor flows and interest-rate expectations can move both stocks and the NT dollar | U.S. rates, global flows and trade policy can move the dollar and technology multiples | Is the currency move reinforcing or offsetting the equity move? |
How to analyze a Taiwan technology investment step by step
- Identify the exact listing. TSMC common shares trade in Taiwan under ticker 2330. Its American depositary shares trade in New York under ticker TSM. Confirm whether your broker is showing the Taiwan ordinary share or the U.S. ADS, because the quote, trading hours, depositary structure and conversion process differ.
- Record the quote convention. Write down whether the exchange rate is NT$ per US$ or US$ per NT$. For a date-specific calculation, use the Central Bank’s daily interbank closing series. For a period comparison, use its monthly or annual average series when that matches the company data.
- Separate local performance from currency. Calculate the Taiwan share-price return first. Then apply E0 ÷ E1 to obtain the currency-adjusted dollar return. Do not describe the local percentage as your dollar return.
- Map revenue currencies. Read the company’s latest annual report and earnings materials for the currencies of sales, receivables and contracts. TSMC’s disclosure that substantially all sales are in U.S. dollars is unusually clear, but other issuers may provide only partial detail.
- Map cost and balance-sheet currencies. Check wages, utilities, materials, equipment, capital expenditure, debt, cash and lease obligations. A company’s net exposure is the difference between inflows and outflows, not its sales currency alone.
- Read the hedge disclosure. Note the instruments used, the currencies covered, maturity dates and whether management describes a sensitivity. Treat the hedge as a reduction in exposure rather than a guarantee.
- Build at least three scenarios. Keep the local share price constant in one scenario to isolate currency. Then combine a local equity gain or loss with NT appreciation and depreciation to see the range of dollar outcomes.
- Check dividends separately. Record the declared currency, payment date and conversion mechanism. A dividend can be positive in NT dollars but worth less in U.S. dollars if the NT dollar weakens before conversion.
- Compare like with like. Use the same exchange-rate type—end-period with end-period, average with average—and the same reporting period when comparing two companies or two years.
Scenario matrix: what different combinations can mean
| Local share price | NT dollar | Possible U.S.-dollar outcome | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rises | Appreciates | Both factors help | Strongest translation setup for a U.S. holder, although valuation risk remains |
| Rises | Depreciates | Currency offsets part of the gain | Business performance can look better locally than in dollars |
| Falls | Appreciates | Currency cushions part of the loss | A weak share price can still produce a smaller dollar loss |
| Falls | Depreciates | Both factors hurt | Worst translation combination for a U.S. holder |
| Flat | Appreciates | Positive dollar return | Currency alone raises the converted share value |
| Flat | Depreciates | Negative dollar return | Currency alone lowers the converted share value |
Ordinary shares, ADSs and dividends
TSMC’s Taiwan ordinary shares use ticker 2330, while its New York ADSs use ticker TSM. The ADS is designed to represent an interest in the underlying Taiwan shares, but its market price is also affected by the depositary arrangement, trading hours, liquidity, fees and the NT-dollar/U.S.-dollar conversion. The two listings should trend together after allowing for those factors, yet they can diverge temporarily.
For an investor buying the Taiwan listing, the direct currency calculation is straightforward: divide the NT-dollar price by NT$/US$. For an investor buying the ADS, the market price is already in dollars, but currency still matters through the value of the underlying shares and through TSMC’s dollar and NT-dollar cash flows. A dollar quote does not make the operating business currency-neutral.
Dividends require the same separation. The local declaration is an NT-dollar amount. The U.S. investor’s realized value depends on the exchange rate used when the dividend is converted, any depositary or brokerage charges, and the timing between declaration and receipt. Do not use the local dividend yield as a fixed dollar yield without checking those details.

Confusing NT appreciation with a rising NT$/US$ quote
When the quote is NT$ per US$, NT appreciation makes the number fall. A chart that rises is showing a weaker NT dollar under this convention. Write the quote next to every calculation.

Using an average rate for a point-in-time return
Annual averages are useful for period-wide revenue comparisons, not for valuing a position purchased and sold on two dates. Use daily closing data for date-specific returns and disclose which series you used.
Assuming every Taiwan exporter benefits from a weaker NT dollar
A weaker NT dollar can increase the NT-dollar value of U.S.-dollar sales, but it can also increase the NT-dollar cost of imported equipment, materials, energy or debt service. The net result depends on the company’s contracts and hedge book.
Applying TSMC’s sensitivity to another issuer
The 0.4 percentage-point margin sensitivity belongs to TSMC’s 2024 disclosure. It is not a sector-wide coefficient. Smaller companies can have very different customer contracts, cost locations, debt currencies and hedge practices.
Ignoring the difference between reported and economic results
Translation can change the NT-dollar presentation even when the underlying U.S.-dollar business is stable. Conversely, a transaction loss or gain can affect cash economics. Read the income statement, cash-flow statement and risk-management note together.
Calling a historical move a forecast
The Central Bank’s 2025 figures describe what happened, not what must happen next. Future rates depend on monetary policy, trade policy, capital flows and company hedging decisions. Use the figures to stress-test a portfolio rather than to predict a target exchange rate.
How currency should influence an investment decision
Currency is one risk factor, not a standalone buy or sell signal. A U.S. investor should first decide whether the company’s long-term technology economics are attractive in the local market. Then determine whether the desired position is intentionally exposed to the NT dollar or whether a separate hedge is appropriate. Hedging can reduce currency volatility, but it introduces cost, rollover decisions and basis risk; the company’s own hedges do not automatically hedge the shareholder’s personal exposure.
For TSMC specifically, the combination of mostly U.S.-dollar sales, a large multinational cost base, disclosed financial hedges and two trading venues means the exchange rate can affect reported margins, the local share price and the converted value of an investor’s holding through different channels. A stronger NT dollar may pressure translated operating results while helping the dollar value of 2330 shares. A weaker NT dollar may support reported NT-dollar revenue while reducing the U.S.-dollar value of those shares. The direction of the stock therefore cannot be inferred from the currency alone.
Quick Recap
A practical monitoring checklist
- Track NT$/US$ using a clearly labeled quote and note whether the observation is a daily close, monthly average or annual average.
- Read the latest company filing for sales, costs, capital expenditure, debt, cash and hedge currencies.
- Separate local share-price return, currency return and dividend return in your performance record.
- For TSMC, compare management’s current foreign-exchange commentary with the 2024 sensitivity and Q2 2025 example without treating either as a forecast.
- Check whether you own Taiwan ordinary shares or a New York ADS and understand how the depositary converts dividends and corporate actions.
- Stress-test at least one appreciation and one depreciation case before deciding how large the position should be.
- Review trade-policy news, foreign-investor flows, exporter dollar selling and interest-rate expectations as potential currency drivers, while recognizing that their effects can conflict.
