SynSense demonstrated a customer’s toy robot that recognizes and copies human gestures such as crossing its arms and clapping. Chinese intelligent-toy manufacturer QunYu developed the robot; SynSense supplied the Speck module that combines event-based vision with a spiking neural-network processor. SynSense reported 8.74 mW mean total active power for the module during continuous gesture-recognition inference, a vendor measurement for this specific workload rather than a universal system or industry benchmark.

What the demonstration showed

The robot was presented at the Shantou (Chenghai) International Toy Fair. A person performs a gesture, and the robot identifies it and reproduces the motion. The reported examples included crossing the robot’s arms and clapping.

QunYu made the toy robot. SynSense did not present itself as the robot manufacturer; its contribution was the Speck processing module used for the robot’s gesture-recognition function.

What is inside the Speck module?

Component Role
IniVation dynamic vision sensor 128 × 128-pixel event-based image sensor that reports changes in a scene.
SynSense Dynap-CNN processor Processes the vision stream with spiking-neural-network acceleration tailored to vision convolution.

Unlike a conventional camera that repeatedly sends complete image frames, a dynamic vision sensor produces events when pixels detect changes. A moving hand can therefore generate activity while an unchanged background produces little or no data. SynSense says the sparse stream can be processed directly, avoiding a conversion into conventional full frames.

How the processor is designed

SynSense describes the Dynap-CNN neuron model as integrate-and-fire and the processor architecture as asynchronous digital. Those are characteristics of this processor design, not a description of every neuromorphic chip.

Why event-based vision suits a gesture toy

Gesture copying is a narrow interaction task: the robot needs to detect relevant movement and classify a limited set of gestures, not understand a complete photographic scene. An event stream can reduce the amount of visual data presented to the processor, while spiking computation can operate on that stream without reconstructing ordinary video frames.

That does not prove that event-based vision is better for every robot. The approach depends on the task, lighting, motion, required accuracy, latency, sensor integration and software model. A static object, for example, may produce few events, while fast or complex scenes can create a much denser stream.

What the 8.74 mW figure means

SynSense reported a mean total active power of 8.74 mW in 2023 while Speck performed continuous gesture-recognition inference during gesture interaction. The number is a use-case measurement attributed to SynSense. It is not an independently verified comparison, a complete power figure for every part of the robot, or a guarantee for other workloads, software versions or operating conditions.

The figure should also not be confused with SynSense’s Xylo family. Xylo is a separate time-series processor architecture aimed at inputs such as audio, biosignals, vibration and accelerometer data; it was not the processor used in this toy robot.

Why SynSense targeted toys first

SynSense presented toys as an accessible early commercial application because a toy can tolerate modest recognition accuracy compared with safety-critical robotics, while successful products may ship in high volume. In 2023, SynSense’s Dylan Muir, then vice president of global research operations, said:

What customers would evaluate

An EE Times interview published on May 17, 2024 characterized Speck as an integrated, low-cost, low-power edge-vision platform and identified gesture interaction and presence detection as early application areas. Muir summarized the practical buying criteria this way:

“When I’m speaking to customers, I don’t use the word neuromorphic, I don’t talk about spiking neural networks, I don’t talk about DVS sensors or event-based imaging, because the customers don’t care about that,”

“They care about what you can deliver to them: Does it work? What’s the cost? What’s the energy consumption? What’s the performance? [Those are] the metrics they care about.”

What this demo does—and does not—establish

  • It establishes: QunYu built a gesture-copying toy robot that used SynSense’s Speck module; the reported interaction included arm crossing and clapping.
  • It establishes: Speck pairs a 128 × 128 IniVation dynamic vision sensor with SynSense’s Dynap-CNN spiking processor.
  • It provides: SynSense’s 8.74 mW mean active-power result for continuous gesture-recognition inference in that interaction.
  • It does not establish: broad robotics performance, superiority over conventional camera systems, independent energy benchmarks, consumer availability, unit sales or market share.

Is the robot or Speck available to consumers?

The reported material names a customer robot and specialist development hardware, but does not identify a consumer model currently sold with SynSense hardware. SynSense’s archive includes historical Speck Demo Kit and developer-kit announcements; an archived announcement alone does not confirm present stock, pricing or an affiliate purchase route. Readers should verify current availability directly with SynSense or an authorized supplier rather than assuming that a generic gesture-controlled toy contains Speck.
