If your Switchboard Live YouTube stream is stuck on “Starting,” first find out where the video feed stops: between your encoder and Switchboard, or between Switchboard and YouTube. Check for incoming video in Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor, then inspect the YouTube destination and its Live Control Room health messages. The right fix depends on which stage is failing; there is no single cause established for every start delay.
1. Check whether Switchboard is receiving your encoder feed
- Open the relevant Switchboard workflow. Compare its Stream URL and Stream Key with the server and key configured in your encoder. Switchboard’s initial setup guide recommends revealing the key in the workflow and checking it against the encoder configuration.
- Start the encoder’s output and look at the Confidence Monitor. It previews video arriving from the encoder. If it shows no source, Switchboard is not receiving the feed yet; a YouTube destination cannot start from a signal Switchboard does not have.
- Check the workflow status. A successful input test should change the status from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving.” Switchboard’s workflow page can also show incoming bitrate and FPS once the encoder connects. Destination Start buttons remain inactive until incoming video is detected.
- Start the YouTube destination only after video is present. Switchboard explicitly notes that the input test does not itself push the stream live to a destination: “This will not push you live to any Destination; it only tests the link between your software and Switchboard.”
If the workflow shows “Receiving” and video is visible, the encoder-to-Switchboard link is working. Move on to the destination and YouTube checks rather than repeatedly changing the ingest key.
2. Check the encoder’s output and recommended settings
Confirm that the encoder is actually sending output to the Stream URL and key for this workflow. Switchboard recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe rate, and 30 or 60 FPS in its initial setup guidance. These are recommendations to verify, not proof that any one setting caused the start problem.
YouTube advises using the latest encoder version. Check the encoder for startup errors and CPU load, and inspect a local recording if you have one. If the local output looks healthy, test the outbound internet connection; YouTube recommends contacting your internet service provider if that test identifies a connection problem. See YouTube’s encoder-start troubleshooting guidance.

3. Read YouTube Live Control Room’s health status
When Switchboard is receiving video but its YouTube destination is not live, open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the Health Indicator and its timestamped error messages. YouTube distinguishes critical red errors, which may prevent an event from starting or affect viewers, from moderate yellow errors, which may degrade quality. Follow the message that is actually displayed instead of applying a generic settings reset. Details are in YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guide.
If the encoder reports an error starting
For an error starting a third-party encoder, YouTube’s guidance is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. If your streaming software signs in to YouTube without using a stream key, YouTube says to contact that software’s support team; it may need an update.

4. Check the title only if YouTube schedules the stream
If the specific symptom is that YouTube schedules the stream instead of going live, Switchboard’s FAQ identifies a missing stream title in the active template as a possible cause. Stop the stream and update the YouTube title field in that template. This is a targeted check for the scheduling symptom, not a universal explanation for a feed stuck on “Starting.”
Use the symptom to choose your next check
| What you see | Likely stage to inspect | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No video in the Confidence Monitor; workflow says “Not Receiving” | Encoder to Switchboard | Compare the workflow Stream URL and Stream Key with the encoder, confirm output is running, and check for encoder or connection errors. |
| Video is visible and the workflow says “Receiving,” but YouTube is not live | Switchboard destination to YouTube | Inspect destination status and YouTube Live Control Room’s Health Indicator and timestamped errors. |
| YouTube schedules the stream rather than going live | Template title, for this specific symptom | Check whether the active template has a YouTube stream title; update it after stopping the stream if it is missing. |
Or let it run in the cloud
