On a phone or tablet, choose Data saver for a quick lower-quality setting, or Advanced and a specific resolution if available. The exact menu and choices can vary by device.
Lower YouTube playback quality on your device
These steps change the quality on your copy of the video. They do not change the stream for other viewers.
Computer
- Open the live stream on YouTube.
- Select the gear icon in the player.
- Select Quality, then choose a lower resolution from the available options.
Phone or tablet
- Tap the video to show the player controls, then open the gear or settings menu.
- Tap Quality.
- Choose Data saver for a simpler lower-quality preference, or choose Advanced and select a lower resolution if that option is available.
TV
- Open the stream’s playback settings.
- Choose Quality, then select a lower resolution from the list.
YouTube’s menu wording and available choices can differ across devices and app versions. If you do not see a particular resolution, choose a lower option that is offered.
Auto quality or a manual lower resolution?
YouTube’s Auto setting adjusts video quality to viewing conditions. YouTube says it considers factors including connection speed, player or screen size, the source video’s quality, and browser format support. A manual lower resolution gives you more direct control when you want to prioritize lower data use or a less demanding stream. YouTube describes its automatic adjustment this way: “To give you the best viewing experience, YouTube changes the quality of your video stream based on your viewing conditions.” YouTube Help: Change the quality of your video.

Why Switchboard encoder settings are not the viewer’s fix
Switchboard Live’s encoder recommendations are for the broadcaster configuring the outgoing stream, not for viewers changing playback quality. YouTube receives a live input and transcodes it into formats for viewers on different devices and networks; the viewer’s resolution control is in the YouTube player. Switchboard Live: Configure your Encoder Settings · YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
So if you are watching, do not change encoder bitrate or resolution settings in an attempt to lower your own playback quality. Those settings belong to the person or organization sending the stream. Older broadcaster guidance may not reflect current recommendations, and it does not tell a viewer which YouTube quality option to select.

If the stream still buffers after lowering quality
A lower resolution can reduce the bandwidth needed for playback, but it cannot resolve every cause of buffering. You can try these practical checks:
- Confirm that the player is set to the lower resolution you selected rather than back on Auto.
- Reload the player or reopen the stream in case playback has stalled.
- If your connection is shared or congested, try again when fewer devices are using it, or use a more stable connection if one is available.
- If the issue is temporary network congestion, waiting a little may help; none of these steps is a guaranteed fix.
Live-stream latency can also affect buffering. YouTube explains that low-latency streaming leaves less time for the player to build a read-ahead buffer, trading some buffering resilience for more immediate interaction. YouTube Help: Understand live streaming latency.
