For a 24/7 YouTube channel that does not depend on live audience interaction, use YouTube’s Normal latency setting. Switchboard Live advises leaving latency at its default unless you have specific instructions, and YouTube says Normal offers the least buffering while supporting all resolutions and live features. This setting controls delay; it does not keep a stream online or guarantee uninterrupted operation.
What stream latency means
YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and that event appearing on viewers’ streams. Lower latency can make conversation feel more immediate, but it can also make viewers more susceptible to buffering. For continuous programming such as music, worship, or looping video, where the audience is not responding to a host in real time, minimizing that delay usually matters less than stable playback.
Which latency setting should you choose?

The Low and Ultra-low figures are typical experiences for most viewers, not guaranteed end-to-end delays. These options trade some resilience for faster interaction. For a channel that mainly plays prerecorded content, Normal is generally the practical choice.
How to set up latency in a Switchboard Live YouTube event
- Choose or create the YouTube event. In YouTube Live Control Room, select the scheduled stream or create the event you will send through Switchboard. The precise interface labels may change, so confirm the selected event and destination before going live.
- Use the default latency unless you have a reason to change it. Switchboard’s YouTube event guidance says to keep latency at its default unless specific instructions say otherwise. For a non-interactive 24/7 channel, that means Normal latency.
- Connect the encoder to the Switchboard workflow. Switchboard’s workflow documentation describes choosing an ingest protocol and monitoring incoming video; listed options include RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT. Its YouTube event setup describes connecting with a persistent stream key or a one-time custom RTMP setup. Keep the key private and use the connection method configured for your event.
- Test the actual feed before relying on it. Send representative video, movement, and audio, then check stream health in YouTube and incoming video in Switchboard. Confirm playback and audio on the viewer side as well; encoder-to-platform configuration alone does not establish the delay viewers will experience.
Encoder and ingest details that can affect the result
Switchboard’s published minimum encoder settings
Switchboard lists minimums for its multistreaming setup of 720p (1280 × 720) at 30 fps, 2 Mbps video bitrate, 96 Kbps audio bitrate, and a keyframe at least every two seconds. Treat these as Switchboard’s stated minimums, not as a guarantee of reliable 24/7 operation or as a complete YouTube configuration. YouTube’s recommended bitrate depends on the selected resolution and frame rate, so check its current encoder guidance for your output rather than assuming those minimums are sufficient.

RTMP versus HLS
YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments; choosing HLS also disables Ultra-low latency. HLS has segment and playlist requirements, so verify that the protocol and event configuration suit your use case. Switchboard lists RTMP, RTMPS, and SRT as workflow ingest options, but SRT availability by itself does not establish that YouTube’s viewer latency setting or resulting delay will change. Configure and validate the YouTube event separately.
Latency is not a 24/7 uptime setting
Normal latency is a playback-delay choice, not a continuous-stream mode. The published guidance establishes latency options and trade-offs, but does not identify a dedicated 24/7 latency setting, certify an encoder for continuous operation, or promise an uninterrupted broadcast. Plan for stream monitoring and recovery separately from latency selection.
