To enable UEFI without leaving Windows unable to start, first check how Windows currently boots and whether its system disk is GPT or MBR. If Windows is installed for Legacy/CSM boot on an eligible MBR system disk, validate and convert that disk before changing the firmware to UEFI. Switching firmware modes first can break the existing boot path. Back up important files and locate your BitLocker recovery key before making changes.

What does enabling UEFI change?

UEFI is a firmware boot mode, not a Windows setting that converts an existing installation. Windows normally starts using the mode in which it was installed. A Legacy/CSM installation may depend on an MBR boot layout; a UEFI installation normally uses a GPT system disk and an EFI System Partition. The firmware mode and the system disk’s boot layout need to agree.

That is why changing a firmware option called “Legacy,” “CSM,” or “UEFI” is not a safe first step by itself. If Windows still relies on its legacy boot files after the firmware is set to UEFI-only, the PC may not find a bootable Windows entry. Microsoft’s guidance on choosing UEFI or legacy BIOS mode explains that the installation and firmware boot modes must be aligned.

UEFI and Secure Boot are related but distinct. UEFI is the boot mode; Secure Boot is a firmware security feature that can be enabled separately. Microsoft specifies UEFI and Secure Boot capability for Windows 11, and describes enabling Secure Boot as an additional protective step. Consult your PC manufacturer’s documentation for its specific controls and effects.

What should I check before changing the firmware?

Identify the Windows system disk and current boot mode first. Do not infer the system disk’s partition style from another disk in the PC: a data disk can be GPT while Windows boots from a different MBR disk.

  • Back up important files. Keep a separate copy on an external drive or cloud storage. A recovery drive and Windows installation media are not substitutes for a personal-file backup.
  • Check firmware support. Consult the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions to confirm UEFI support and find the relevant boot-mode and boot-entry controls.
  • Check BIOS Mode. In Windows, open Start, search for System Information (or run msinfo32), and inspect BIOS Mode. It reports whether the current Windows session booted in UEFI or Legacy mode.
  • Check the system disk’s partition style. In Disk Management, identify the disk containing Windows and inspect its properties, or use PowerShell’s Get-Disk or DiskPart to inspect the relevant disk. Match the disk number to the actual Windows system disk; do not assume it is Disk 0.
  • Prepare for BitLocker recovery. If device encryption or BitLocker is enabled, make sure you can retrieve the recovery key before changing boot settings. Windows recovery options may require that key. Microsoft says an encrypted MBR system disk can be converted when protection is suspended; its MBR2GPT instructions also describe recreating protectors before protection resumes.

Use Microsoft’s MBR2GPT documentation for supported conversion requirements and options. The tool’s validation determines whether a particular disk meets its prerequisites; the general procedure cannot establish that for an individual PC.

How can I verify that I have the right disk?

Use the disk number shown by the disk inspection tool to target the Windows system disk, then verify it against the disk containing the Windows installation and its boot configuration. In Disk Management, disks are numbered separately from their drive letters; a partition labeled C: alone is not a reason to assume the whole disk is Disk 0. PowerShell’s Get-Disk and DiskPart can also show partition style and disk number. If the tools or layout leave you unsure which disk starts Windows, stop rather than test commands against a guessed disk.

That distinction matters because MBR2GPT is intended for an MBR system disk. It is not a general-purpose way to convert any data disk, and a GPT data disk elsewhere in the machine does not prove that Windows is already configured for UEFI. Likewise, UEFI support in firmware is a prerequisite to using the converted boot path, not proof that the current Windows installation is ready for it.

Which path should I take?

Use the current boot mode and the Windows system disk’s partition style together to choose a path. Do not run a conversion simply because the firmware offers UEFI.

What you find Recommended path What to avoid
Windows boots in UEFI mode and its system disk is GPT Keep UEFI. If the PC is not starting, check that firmware is selecting the intended Windows boot entry. Consider Secure Boot separately. Do not run MBR2GPT on a disk that is already GPT.
Windows boots in Legacy mode and its system disk is MBR Back up, check encryption and eligibility, validate the system disk with MBR2GPT, convert if validation succeeds, then change firmware to UEFI. Do not switch to UEFI before the disk has a suitable UEFI boot layout.
Windows Setup was booted in UEFI mode but says the selected disk is not GPT Verify that Setup is targeting the intended disk. If preserving the existing Windows installation, assess the supported conversion path. If doing a fresh installation, understand that formatting erases data. Do not format or delete partitions until you have confirmed the target disk and have a backup.

The table is a decision aid, not a substitute for checking the actual Windows system disk. For a clean installation, Microsoft’s Windows Setup documentation warns: “Reformatting will erase all the data on the drive.”

When Setup reports that a selected disk is not GPT, first confirm both which disk Setup selected and how the installation media was booted. If the firmware menu lists both UEFI: USB Drive and a legacy USB entry, the UEFI entry is the appropriate one for a UEFI installation or repair path. If you want to keep the existing Windows installation, investigate whether its system disk can be converted; if you deliberately choose a fresh installation, treat deleting or reformatting partitions as destructive and make a backup first.

How do I convert an eligible MBR system disk without reinstalling Windows?

Microsoft’s MBR2GPT tool can convert an eligible MBR system disk to GPT without intentionally erasing the data on that disk. That does not make conversion risk-free: back up first, verify the recovery key where applicable, and do not continue if validation fails. The tool is for the system disk, not an arbitrary MBR data disk.

Compared with a clean installation, conversion is the path intended to retain the existing eligible Windows installation; a clean installation is a deliberate reinstall that may erase the target disk. Both still require the firmware to use the correct UEFI boot path afterward. Validation is a prerequisite for conversion, not a guarantee that every PC or disk is suitable.

1. Confirm the disk is eligible

MBR2GPT checks disk geometry, partitions and boot configuration. Among its layout requirements, the disk must have no more than three primary MBR partitions and must not contain an extended or logical partition. Use the tool’s validation rather than guessing from a general description of the disk. Microsoft’s documentation states that when the tool cannot reuse an EFI System Partition, it creates one sized at 100 MB, or 260 MB on disks with a 4K sector size. These are tool behaviors, not instructions to create a partition manually.

The three-primary-partition limit applies to MBR2GPT’s eligible MBR layout; it is not a limit on the number of partitions GPT can support. Do not remove, resize, or create partitions just to try to satisfy the tool based on this summary. If validation fails, use its reported issue and Microsoft’s current requirements to determine the next step, or seek help before altering the disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Validate before converting

Open an elevated Command Prompt and target the correct disk number. For example, replace <disk number> with the number you verified for the Windows system disk:

mbr2gpt /validate /disk:<disk number> /allowFullOS

/validate checks whether the selected disk can be converted; it does not perform the conversion. The /allowFullOS option permits MBR2GPT to run from the full Windows operating system. It is not needed when running the tool from Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE). If validation reports a problem, stop and resolve the reported eligibility issue rather than changing firmware or improvising partition edits.

Validation is especially useful before committing to the next step: it checks the selected disk’s geometry, partition layout and boot configuration. Make sure the disk number in the command is the same one you verified; a technically valid command aimed at the wrong disk is still the wrong operation.

3. Convert only after validation succeeds

With a current backup and successful validation, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
mbr2gpt /convert /disk:<disk number> /allowFullOS

The conversion option validates and converts the selected disk. On a successful conversion, MBR2GPT creates or reuses an EFI System Partition, installs UEFI boot files and updates the boot configuration. It does not change the firmware’s boot mode for you. If you are using WinPE instead of full Windows, omit /allowFullOS.

Do not interrupt this sequence by changing the firmware to UEFI before conversion finishes. After success, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to enter firmware setup and select the Windows UEFI boot entry. Keep your backup and BitLocker recovery key available until Windows has started successfully and you have confirmed the expected protection state.

4. Change firmware to UEFI after conversion

Restart into the PC’s firmware setup using the manufacturer’s instructions. Change the boot mode from Legacy/CSM to UEFI, then make the Windows UEFI boot entry the intended boot target. Firmware menus and labels differ among devices. Microsoft states: “After the disk has been converted to GPT partition style, the firmware must be reconfigured to boot in UEFI mode.”

If BitLocker protection was suspended for the conversion, follow Microsoft’s instructions to recreate the protectors and resume protection after Windows starts successfully. Keep the recovery key available until you have confirmed the machine boots normally.

Can I enable Secure Boot at the same time?

It is safer to treat Secure Boot as a separate decision from changing boot mode. First establish that Windows starts through the UEFI boot path; then consult the PC manufacturer’s instructions for enabling Secure Boot and any prerequisite settings. Windows 11 requires UEFI and Secure Boot capability, but UEFI boot does not mean Secure Boot is already enabled.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Secure Boot guidance describes Secure Boot’s role. As of November 2026, Microsoft says Secure Boot certificate updates are delivered through Windows Update to most supported devices with automatic updates enabled. That does not establish the update state of every PC. If Secure Boot is disabled, check OEM firmware guidance before changing it.

What should I do if Windows will not start after the change?

Check the selected boot mode and boot entry before attempting repairs or erasing anything. A failure after changing firmware can mean the PC is trying the wrong boot path, not that Windows must be reinstalled.

  1. Return to firmware setup. Verify that the machine is set to the mode appropriate for the installation and that it is attempting the intended Windows boot entry. If the conversion did not complete successfully, do not assume that a UEFI-only configuration is now correct.
  2. Use a UEFI boot path for repair media. If the firmware menu shows both a UEFI: USB Drive entry and a legacy USB entry, choose the UEFI entry when following a UEFI repair or installation path.
  3. Open Windows Recovery Environment. If Windows does not reach recovery on its own, boot Windows installation media and choose the repair option. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Microsoft’s Windows startup troubleshooting guidance covers startup diagnosis and repair paths.
  4. Read the effect of any recovery option before proceeding. Startup Repair attempts to address startup problems. Reset and reinstall choices have different effects on files, applications and settings. Back up where possible and review the specific option before confirming it.

Do not treat BOOTREC /FIXMBR as a universal UEFI fix. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes the UEFI EFI boot-manager path from legacy MBR and bootmgr paths. Manual boot-configuration work should follow a diagnosis of which mode and boot files the PC actually uses.

If BitLocker is enabled, have the recovery key ready when entering Windows Recovery Environment: most WinRE recovery options can require it. Startup Repair is an attempt to address startup problems, not the same operation as resetting Windows or reinstalling it. If a repair option does not resolve the boot issue, read the stated effect of the next recovery choice before confirming it, especially where it may affect personal files, applications, or settings.

What is the difference between installation media, a recovery drive and a backup?

They serve different purposes, so preparing one does not automatically prepare the others.

  • Windows installation media can start Windows Setup and provide access to repair tools. Microsoft Support specifies a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB for creating installation media; the process deletes existing contents on that USB drive.
  • A recovery drive contains Windows recovery material for recovery workflows. It does not include your personal files.
  • A file backup is a separate copy of personal files, such as on an external drive or cloud storage. Make it before changing disk layout or firmware settings.

If you need both installation media and a recovery drive, plan for their separate creation steps and storage requirements rather than assuming one USB device covers every recovery need.

Check the contents of any USB drive before creating installation media: the creation process erases its existing contents. A blank drive of at least 8 GB is the stated minimum for that task. A separate empty USB drive can be used for a recovery-drive workflow, while an external hard drive or cloud storage can hold a separate file backup. These options serve different purposes; none should be described as a substitute for the others.

Does Windows 10 support change affect this procedure?

Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft; eligible Extended Security Updates are a separate case. That support date does not change the disk-layout and firmware sequence described above, but it matters when deciding whether to keep using a Windows 10 installation. Do not assume an individual PC is enrolled in an Extended Security Updates program.

Microsoft’s Secure Boot certificate update guidance is also device-dependent: it describes delivery through Windows Update to most supported devices that receive automatic updates, not a guaranteed identical state for every PC. Check Windows Update and the PC manufacturer’s firmware guidance rather than assuming every machine has the same certificate status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change BIOS from Legacy to UEFI without reinstalling Windows?

Often, if Windows is on an eligible MBR system disk and the PC supports UEFI. Back up, check BitLocker recovery readiness, validate the system disk with Microsoft’s MBR2GPT tool, convert only if validation succeeds, and then change firmware to UEFI. Do not switch modes first; MBR2GPT cannot be assumed to work for every disk.

Will enabling UEFI stop Windows from booting?

It can if firmware is switched to UEFI while Windows still depends on a Legacy/CSM boot layout. Check the current BIOS Mode and the Windows system disk’s partition style, and arrange a suitable UEFI/GPT boot path before changing firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to convert MBR to GPT before enabling Secure Boot?

For the usual Windows UEFI boot path, check that Windows is already booting in UEFI on a GPT system disk or use a supported conversion path if it is on an eligible MBR system disk. Secure Boot is separate from UEFI; check the PC manufacturer’s instructions for its prerequisites and settings.

Why does Windows Setup say the selected disk is not GPT?

Setup may have been booted in UEFI mode while the selected disk uses MBR. Verify that you selected the intended disk and that the USB was booted through its UEFI entry. If keeping Windows, assess MBR2GPT eligibility; a clean install that reformats the disk erases its data.

How do I fix Windows after switching from CSM to UEFI?

First check firmware mode and whether it selects the intended Windows UEFI boot entry. If Windows still will not start, boot installation media using its UEFI USB entry and try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Have the BitLocker recovery key if applicable, and do not assume legacy commands such as BOOTREC /FIXMBR are universal UEFI fixes.

Does UEFI mean my PC has Secure Boot turned on?

No. UEFI is the firmware boot mode, while Secure Boot is a separate firmware feature. A PC can boot in UEFI mode with Secure Boot disabled; check the firmware setting and the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm its state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep a legacy operating system after switching the PC to UEFI?

That depends on whether the operating system and its boot setup support UEFI, and on the firmware’s available compatibility options. The Windows procedure here does not establish compatibility for another operating system; check its documentation before changing boot modes.

Why does the firmware show more than one Windows or USB boot entry?

Firmware can expose entries for different boot paths or devices, and their labels vary by manufacturer. Choose the entry that matches the mode you are repairing or installing in; if the intended Windows entry is unclear, consult the PC maker’s documentation rather than deleting entries at random.

Will MBR2GPT erase my files, and can I use it on a data disk?

MBR2GPT is designed to convert an eligible MBR system disk without intentionally erasing its data, but conversion is not risk-free, so back up first. It is not a general-purpose converter for arbitrary data disks. Use /validate on the correctly identified system disk and stop if validation fails.

What does Startup Repair do, and is it the same as reinstalling Windows?

Startup Repair attempts to address startup problems. It is different from reset or reinstall choices, which have different effects on files, applications, and settings. Review the specific option before proceeding; WinRE options may require a BitLocker recovery key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Check the boot mode and partition style of the actual Windows system disk before changing firmware. If it is an eligible MBR system disk, back up, prepare your BitLocker recovery key, validate with MBR2GPT, convert only after validation succeeds, and then switch to UEFI. If Windows will not start, verify the boot entry and try the correctly booted recovery path before considering reset or reinstall.
