Switch Datacenters acquired a former ABN AMRO data center in Woerden, Netherlands, for a reported €11 million in September 2014. The company said it would pair the site with its Amsterdam data center, using planned direct fiber links to mirror data between the locations.
What Switch bought
Switch’s announcement, carried by Emerce on 11 September 2014, described the acquisition of the former ABN AMRO data center in Woerden. The reported purchase price was €11 million. Emerce’s announcement is the source for the transaction and price.
The announcement described two buildings with a combined area of approximately 12,500 square metres; approximately 5,500 square metres was in the data-center building. These are figures reported at the time of the acquisition, not a current measured survey. Emerce reported the site dimensions.
Why Woerden mattered to Switch
Switch positioned Woerden as a twin data center for its Amsterdam facility. It planned direct fiber connections between the sites to support data mirroring, creating a two-location option for larger cloud environments and customers seeking a twin-site setup. The announcement does not specify recovery-time or recovery-point targets, so the stated design should not be read as a guarantee of a particular recovery performance. The acquisition announcement and Computable’s contemporaneous coverage describe the planned links and purpose.

Switch founder and CEO Gregor Snip described the acquisition as an addition aimed at larger cloud environments and customers needing twin data-center solutions. His statement in Dutch referred to the site as a “Tier3+” facility; that is the company’s description, not an independent certification claim established here. Emerce carried the announcement.
Who was leasing the facility?
Contemporary coverage said a large cloud provider leased most of the facility, but did not identify the tenant. The available reporting does not support naming or guessing the provider. Emerce’s 2014 report describes the tenancy without disclosing the company.

What is known about the Woerden site now?
The Dutch Data Center Association currently lists Switch’s AMS2 location at Polanerbaan 1 in Woerden and identifies Switch as operating three active data centers. That profile confirms a Switch-listed location in Woerden, but it does not establish the site’s current capacity, tenant, precise ownership, configuration, or performance. The association’s Switch profile provides this current listing context.
The 2014 announcement also discussed upgrades and efficiency measures, but the available sources do not establish which plans were completed. They should not be treated as a description of the facility’s current capabilities.
